The Dell Tablet Is Here.. Or Is It?

Dell, the texas computer manufacturing company, has forayed into manufacturing smart phones. Did I say smart phones? Wasn’t it supposed to be a tablet? Oh right. Dell calls this 5 inch screen device which can make phone calls a tablet. I will delve on why this might be so shortly. First, let us see what Streak (a very nice name) actually is. Streak is an Android based device that has cellular phone features along with 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support. The Streak features a 5 inch, 800 by 480 display with a 1 GHz snapdragon processor with 2 GB of internal storage (with support for up to 32 GB of additional SD storage), a 5 MP camera with LED flash and a front facing camera for video chat. It will come installed with Android 1.6 (Donut) but will receive an over-the-air upgrade to Android 2.2 (Froyo) later this year. The Steak may be available in nine different colors, continuing with Dell’s strategy of inducing fresh colors for its products. Pricing details were not announced. Touted to be a tough competition for the Apple iPad which sold more than 1 million gadgets within a month of its debut, Dell considers it to be a “ sweet spot between traditional smart phones and larger screen tablets “. Now, the HTC Evo is a smart phone with a 4.3 inch display. The Streak, with a 5 inch screen, is not much different from the HTC Evo, although it is almost half the size of the 9.7 inch screen of the iPad . Then why is the Streak considered to be a competition for the iPad? The iPad’s hardware is primarily based more on a smart phone than a notebook and it runs the mobile OS rather than a desktop OS like the Mac. The lines get a bit blurry here. The advantages of the Streak over the iPad are that the Streak has a removable battery as opposed to the fixed battery of the iPad, which many people will find to be a relief. Android is an open source OS, while the iPad OS is a proprietary Apple OS. People have took a liking to the Android OS, which also offers many apps and widgets, an advantage that most IT professionals will be comfortable with. Android as such has tremendous potential to be the competitor for the iPad/iPhone competitor. The Dell Streak also has impressive hardware specs, the screen size being one of the only things that don’t compete with the iPad, but according to me, the Streak has to sit on the smartphone side of the fence. What it can be is a very good competitor for the iPhone, which though tremendously popular, is facing a lot of competition these days with Android based smartphones. It is understandable that Dell is selling the Streak as a tablet than a smartphone, for reasons that Dell has not forayed into the smartphone business yet and this can be a smooth transition for them. There are also rumour s of Dell Looking Glass, a 7 inch tablet, which by all accounts will be an actual tablet. All in all, both the Streak and the Looking Glass will be valuable additions to the range of products that Dell has to offer.
