Though India is not known a lot of groundbreaking inventions in the field of technology, we Indians always embrace technology with gusto. With recent waves in cloud computing, India is not to be left behind. According to a study conducted by the global consulting firm, Zinnov Management Consultancy , India’s Cloud Computing market, which is currently pegged at $110 million, could expand 10 times to reach over $1 Billion by 2015. Cloud computing uses a pay per use model where all the applications and software are stored on the network and accessed by the internet. This results in reduction of cost as companies do not have to purchase these products. The sectors that are most likely to use cloud are the financial services, telecom, manufacturing and the government. The cloud is being spearheaded by small and medium businesses as they want to rapidly grow by achieving operational efficiency and low costs. The three main sections of cloud computing are: Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a service (PaaS). While SaaS, the most common, is expected to reach $650 million, IaaS and PaaS would touch the $435 million mark. The SaaS market includes services like enterprise resource management, customer relationship management and e-mail solutions. Some large organizations set up a cloud like architecture in their own data centres, called a private cloud. Public clouds are dominated by companies like Google, Amazon, Salesforce.com, whose services are available to all. This study may cause companies to start contemplating on the use of the cloud for their applications. We Indians are best known for providing quality products and services at the lowest cost. Cloud computing, forecasted to reduce the cost to organizations, may well find a true believer in India. Google has already set up research centres in India related to cloud computing. IT firms have also started to understand this new phenomenon. What do you think of this new prediction? When will companies start adopting this new technology?
