Internet For Lower End Handsets – SiteOnMobile By HP India

Mobile applications will soon be targeted towards the lower end mobile phones with the advent of Google Android . Also mobile companies will come in with new strategies to extend their reach to 600 million mobile users rather than just 60 million internet users. In an attempt to market this very target audience, HP Labs India has developed a cloud-based technology, called SiteonMobile, that simplifies accessing content and doing transactions on the Web. ‘SiteonMobile’ is a solution to deliver Internet content and services over SMS and Voice to non-tech savvy consumers. This technology is specifically made for such non-tech savvy users who will require web content services by are not quite familiar in using them. The technology works by allowing only a short relevant content to the users mobile via SMS or voice services rather than the whole web page on request. Mobile phones users can access specific information on the Web or complete a transaction online by sending an SMS (short message service) or calling up a number that invokes the relevant TaskLet on the cloud. TaskLets represent the interactions for a user’s specific web task. In addition to mobile phones, even those owning the PCs can run TaskLets by clicking the corresponding widgets on their computer screens. Since the TaskLets reside in the cloud they can be accessed from anywhere from any device. The SiteonMobile technology even allows people with little or no programming experience to create the TaskLets for a variety of online services. The ease with which the TaskLet can be created will also ensure that small computer vendors and desktop printing shops in small towns and villages will be able to create the applications for customers in those markets. The lab is also working on technology that will enable businesses that do not have Web sites to also offer TaskLet to mobile users. Also to provide content in local languages, the SiteonMobile technology chains together information services on the Web with translation services already available online. This new technology is bound to give the mobile-internet relationship a new dimension. It will also take the internet to the masses. Do let us know your take on this!
