Srei Sahaj And Bharat Matrimony Bring Online Matrimony To Villages

by Paul Joseph July 1, 2010 Featured

Srei Sahaj e-Village Limited in collaboration with Bharat Matrimony has launched a new service that will bring the benefits of online matrimonial websites to rural villages. Srei Sahaj e-Village Limited is a subsidiary of Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited which has been created under the Prime Minister Flagship National E Governance Plan. The objective of this organization is to bridge the digital divide between the rural and urban regions. It plans to do so by setting up Common Service Centres(CSCs) through selected states of India (Assam, Bihar, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal) and create a network of village level of entrepreneurs (VLEs). The digital services offered by these will be propogated in the villages through these VLEs. Among the many services that Srei Sahaj has initiated in the rural villages, the newest service on the block is the online matrimonial website. The basic structure of the service currently is that the interested villager has to register himself on the Sahaj portal by approaching a VLE. He will obtain an id and password using which he will have to register himself on the Sahaj – Bharat Matrimony home page on the portal. The online profiles and procedures will be in English. For verification of profiles, Bharat Matrimony will manually check the details of the profile and verify all the details put up via telecom. Bharat Matrimony has been coming up with many initiatives to enhance its user base and this is move to tap into the rural population of India.  The online matrimony segment is a hot sector. To read up a recap of this space go here . The cost structure has been designed such that the registration for the villager is free. Two packages will be offered to the villager after the registration stage. First package is a Sahaj BM Classic Membership package costing Rs. 499 for 3 months. Under this the villager will get phone numbers of 10 prospects on the BM site. The second package, Sahaj BM Classic Super Membership will cost Rs.999 for 6 months enabling access to 25 phone numbers. The incentive for a VLE to market the service among the villagers will be that he will receive Rs. 45 for every registration a commission of 10% on sale of a special package. Srei Sahaj currently has 20,000 VLEs and is reaching out to 200 million rural people. It offers 30 services such as NREGA photograph, NREGA data collection, BSNL bill collection etc. It is planning to set up 28000 CSCs in Assam, Bihar, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Amidst the several necessary services that these centres offer, it remains to be seen how the conservative rural areas of India will respond to putting up marriage-relevant information on the website and actually accept proposals generated online. Since there are no comprehensive statistics or studies conducted regarding the demand of online matrimony help in the match making process of villagers, it is difficult to estimate the rural demand for this service. Yet the performance based incentives for VLEs surely is a constructive feature which will hopefully make the whole process of getting the rural citizenry into the digital loop efficient and effective. What do you think? Government Gives RIM, Skype the Two-Weeks Notice.. Google Gets A Warning!

by Paul Joseph July 1, 2010 Featured

In what seems to be a blast from the past the Indian Government has once again set it’s eyes on BlackBerry maker RIM’s services for security reasons.  What’s more is that this time it has pulled in Skype and Google too. The DoT has said that it will approach the companies and ask them to ensure that data transferred through their services is available to Indian Security Agencies. While RIM and Skype will be given a 15-day deadline to comply, Google will also be contacted to ensure that Gmail follows suit. They have not been given a specific deadline as of now. After a meeting of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Intelligence Bureau, National Technical Research Organization and the Department of Telecom it was also decided to make changes in the existing IT laws. According to these changes, foreign companies will have to provide data to Indian Law Enforcement Agencies. The decision to issue deadlines to RIM and Skype were taken at this same meeting. Even as some telecom companies were questioning the legality of the high speed internet services offered by Tata Teleservices and Reliance Communications, the DoT and intelligence agencies are likely to summon them as these services cannot be monitored as of now. The security concerns regarding BlackBerry services were first raised in 2008.  Tata Teleservices’ application to offer BlackBerry services was rejected  citing the possibility of them being used by terrorists. However, some security experts debunked this theory saying that terrorists were extremely unlikely to use BlackBerry services as this would require them to use corporate or telecom service provided email ids, both of which are easily traceable. While the debate raged on, the controversy slowly subsided with the Government deciding not to disturb the status quo… Until Now. Do you think the Government is being intrusive?Paranoid? Or is it taking the right steps to ensure safety? Let us know what you think. Facebook vs Google – Will You Google Me?

by Paul Joseph July 1, 2010 Featured

It isn’t much of greater significance if competition is ‘ Constructive or Destructive ‘. What really matters in verity is that Competition breeds a successful organization that essentially finds better ways to win battles & overcome its competitors. A similar competitive drama found inside of the social media arena is the battle of Facebook vs Google; One being the King of all search engines and the other a Numero-Uno in Social Networking. The competition between the two huge Online Brands (Google and Facebook) reached a new high with the proliferation of the alleged rumour of Google’s launching its latest project to counter Facebook’s fame. The gossip was started by Kevin Rose , founder of Digg in one of his tweets where he mentioned Facebook’s potential competition could be launched by Google. The rivalry first started with Facebook managing to beat Google in the race of “ The Most Visited Site in US ”, that prompted the more apprehensive Google to launch Google Buzz. Did this new tool create enough Buzz amongst users that could squash Facebook’s success? Apparently, the answer is – NO, it did not. And, I am sure that all intellectual souls in Social Media would opine with me. Let’s christen this scuffle as Google vs Facebook Round I, where Facebook emerged the clear winner with the letdown of both Google tools – Buzz and Orkut. Some even say that Orkut is ‘Almost’ Dead. Now, a more determined Google is ready for Round II with its supposedly new and invigorating tool named Google Me . Speculations state that other Google services like Wave and Latitude could be amalgamated into one social network site – Google Me. If that’s a fact then it is a given that any Gmail account user by default becomes a Google Me user and this definitely would pose a threat to Facebook since, on its launch itself Google Me would have more than 200 million users to its credit. However, more importantly the question that needs to be answered is, would Google Me have in it what Facebook has, which is – the relentless ability of Mark Zuckerberg ’s team to come up with numerous absorbing applications that lure users to stay connected to Facebook. Google’s ideal strategy should be to bank on their user-base and creatively design advanced applications that redefine the way social media sites work. All things said and done, the best fortune tellers for these rival brands of who would achieve success are – Time and Users. Speaking of End-Users (consumers), it becomes imperative for us to comprehend what this competition personifies to them (the users of social network sites). The personification is simple – users will be bestowed with yet another site that enables them to stay advanced, updated, connected and entertained. Consumers will have an extra option (in the form of Google Me) with exhilarating functions to choose from, which could gratify their social networking needs. So, with the advent of Google Me and the rejuvenation of a new competition between Facebook and Google, is of immense value not only for the users but also the players. But, How? With Google’s pro-active strategy (launch of a social network website of which organizational success is anticipated), Facebook needs to hit back with a reactive competitive strategy to hit back at Google. This would lead to the progress of both these brands. All I say is, Hail Competition …!!
