Funding Updates: Ericsson – Novatium Solutions | Naspers – OLX

by Paul Joseph August 31, 2010 Featured

Funding news can only mean one thing; the investors believe that a certain company has the potential to grow. So who is investing in whom? Let us find out. Ericsson Claims Minority Stake in Novatium Swedish telecom giants Ericsson have picked up a minority stake in Chennai based Novatium ,  a company that builds computing platforms. Ericsson joins a list of telcos including Bharti, BSNL, MTNL and Tata. Novatium is backed by Rajesh Jain’s Emergic Ventures, and by US-based investors New Enterprise Associates. This funding helps Novatium increase and establish itself in the foreign market. Currently, Novatium has a range of products like the Nova Navigator and the Nova cNergy. With a broadband connection and a processing device called Nova Navigator, users can access operating systems and work on applications such as MS Office on a monthly rental basis.Founded in 2007, Novatium has sold over 40,000 devices, since first commercially launching the Navigator in 2009. With money from Ericsson, the sales on Novatium devices will only rise across the globe. Naspers Invests in OLX South African-based Naspers has invested in OLX , a classifieds website that may give Craigslist a run for their money soon. According to reports, OLX had, prior to this round of funding, raised around $30 million from various venture capitalist firms. Though OLX has not disclosed the investment by Naspers, insiders believe it to be anywhere in the range of $20 million to $40 million. OLX has come closer to Cragislist in a market where other classifieds have failed to ruffle the feathers of Craigslist. Though OLX is leading the Latin American and Asian markets, Craigslist still rules the rooster in the US. Maybe with the money from this funding round, OLX will be able to step up their game in the US and really challenge Craigslist in their own backyard. Looking for a Social Media Agency? Google To Launch Paid Movies Online – Competition For NetFlix, Apple TV

by Paul Joseph August 30, 2010 Featured

It is not a secret that Google not just wants to be present in everything possible on the internet, but it also wants to be on top. Google has been for some time now making acquisitions of startups or tying up with companies in a bid to create a social networking competitor for Facebook. Now, Google is at it again with YouTube reportedly approaching Hollywood studios to launch a pay-per-view video service globally by the end of the year. According to industry insiders, Google with all its search technology, and YouTube with its enormous user / viewer base, intend to direct traffic to this new service. Considering the traffic that both Google and YouTube generate, it wont be long before this new service will vie for a top spot in the online movie streaming space. Competitors So whose business will Google be eating into with this new venture? Apple TV offers customers a large collection of movies and TV shows, new and old, in HD which the customers can access by paying for the specific movie or TV show. Similarly, Roku , the set top box by NetFlix which allows you to watch TV shows and movies right on your television screen through subscriptions. With Google entering the picture, these companies, along with many others, will surely have a fight for survival. Benefit for Hollywood Studios The DVD business isn’t really generating as much revenue for studios anymore. Studios have to look for alternatives and online movies are a great way to increase revenues. With most movies made today having a digital copy, it wont cost the studio much to tie up with Apple or Google while at the same time the film is distributed through various online channels to the end user. Bollywood movies Closer to home, a pay-per-view movie model has not exactly been established. There is BWCinema which shows you movies on a monthly subscription basis and not pay-per-view. YouTube has a Bollywood channel which shows full movies for free, while Rajshri has old and new movies on their website for free. One important question to ask is that with all the websites that allow you to watch movies for free, would you really pay to watch a movie just for better quality? Looking for a Social Media Agency? ‘Dual’ling SIM connections – Problem For Indian Telcos

by Paul Joseph August 30, 2010 Featured

While talking about mobile connections, there is a decent chance that you have had someone tell you that the only reason for not changing their connection is that a lot of people already have their existing number. That was a problem a few years back when an additional mobile phone meant a significant expenditure to set it rolling. With basic phones, now, under Rs. 2,000 and fancy QWERTY pad decked ones around Rs. 5,000 coupled with almost free SIM card connections, the problem is not so considerable anymore. This is reflected in the Mobile India 2010 study, conducted by JuxtConsult , which suggests that around 9% of the over 650 million mobile subscribers have active multiple connections . An active connection is one which is recharged periodically (prepaid) or paid for every month (postpaid). Of course, that should sound like good news for a telecom operator but things do not seem so rosy if you delve a little deeper. The extremely fierce competition prevailing in this sector has seen rates fall from levels which seem almost obscene now. Case in point – I bought an Airtel SIM 3 weeks ago and got a SIM card with lifetime validity for Rs. 49. I bought an MTNL SIM card in 2006 and recharged a lifetime coupon for Rs. 999 over and above the Rs. 150 I paid for the SIM card! Problem for Telcos: Churn rate This is basically the number of customers who discontinue their subscription to a service. Madhusudan M, CEO of Virgin Mobile pegs this between five and six percent and increasing rapidly. The speed with which this market grew (and is still growing) and competition that exploded on the scene brought forward some marketing strategies that might have set the trend of using one steady mobile connection and another to suit the pocket. Distributing free SIM cards, very attractive network to network calling but not so much when it goes outside the network, focusing on certain regions to enhance service while neglecting others, free daily SMS and call minutes, etc. These strategies scream “selective use”. My friend uses his Vodafone postpaid to send out free messages (daily quote of 200!) and not the Airtel prepaid because Airtel charges Re. 1 for the first SMS of the day. I, myself, keep MTNL only because in Mumbai the rates are seriously cheap even if the network is weak. Location is a major factor for possession of multiple connections. Some services provide good rates for local calls while others do that for calls to their network anywhere in India. That is a major boon for people who spend considerable time in more than one city or town. The new entrants exploit that, almost brutally, like Tata Docomo did by slashing roaming rates. Will this problem die down? ‘Unlikely in the short term’, says Sanjay Tiwari, CEO and Director of JuxtConsult . The inhibition is slowly fading away. People own upto three SIM cards – one for home, one for city of stay and one for friends’ circle – and are managing them comfortably. Increasing acceptance of dual SIM phones might not let the problem die down at all. Probably time for some marketing wizard to crack the market and net a fortune! Looking for a Social Media Agency? Facebook’s Hyderabad Office Inaugurated – Google vs Facebook Battle Comes To India

by Paul Joseph August 30, 2010 Featured

The timing could not have been better. Three days ago we reported how Facebook surpassed Orkut to become the top social networking site in India and now it has opened up its office in Hyderabad, the pearl city of India. Though the official launch date will be in September, it has already decided the Management team to head the India office. Facebook Hyderabad is Facebook’s first office in Asia and second International office, after Dublin, Ireland. Earlier, Facebook has unveiled its plans to setup another office at Austin, Texas. Both these offices are supposed to supplement the support teams stationed at Palo Alto, California, and Dublin. Click here to view the embedded video. The Social networking major has witnessed a major surge in number of users in recent times. With an excess of 500 million users, it is estimated that Facebook is accessed in more than 70 languages and almost seventy percent of users are based outside the US. Looking at the pace of growth, it makes perfect sense for the company to have multiple support centers in multiple time-zones to provide better multi-lingual support, round the clock. Indian point of view The move to set up an office here corroborates the growing importance of India in Facebook’s expansion strategy. And rightly so, India has seventh largest market worldwide for social networking. Moreover, a rich talent base out here allows Facebook to cater to the increasing number of users, advertisers and developers in a localized and speedier way. It also gives an opportunity to capitalize on the booming advertisement industry of the Indian subcontinent. Google already has an office in Hyderabad and now with Facebook’s setup in the same city, the competition has become more interesting.  Both of them would like to utilize the opportunities (both in terms of talent and capital) which this country has to offer. Clearly, the game has now shifted to Indian grounds and the side which handles this Indian pressure (or Indian heat) might turn out to be the winner. So what do you think – Is Facebook  ready enough to take on the Indian challenge? Looking for a Social Media Agency?
