Facebook, Skype To Join Hands – Will It Make Facebook Unbeatable?

by Paul Joseph September 30, 2010 Featured

We have been talking for some time now about how there may be potential competitors for Facebook and its reign on the top of the social networking world. The main competition could obviously be coming from Google Me , a supposed social networking platform being developed by Google. Unfortunately, all we have been seeing on this front from Google is buying more and more companies. All this while, Facebook is getting more users on a daily basis, and providing new things to play around with for users. In the latest, which may also be considered as one of the best moves by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook has tied up with Skype to integrate Facebook Connect with Skype accounts. How does this help Skype? This seems a bit of a rhetorical question, doesn’t it? To begin with, who wouldn’t want to team up with Facebook at this point considering the social network is on top of its game? We got major brands running towards Facebook to market their products to Facebook users. Coming back to the question above, all I need to say towards that is; over 500 million users. Facebook gets what it needs Ok so I did mention that Facebook is on top of it’s game right now but Facebook users reading this will agree that Facebook chat is not exactly the best instant messenger they have ever used. As a matter of fact, it could even be classified as one of the worst. So integrating with Skype is probably the best thing that could have happened to Facebook when it came to its chat service. Now with this integration, Facebook users will be able to call, SMS, or chat with their Facebook friends through Skype. This new affiliation gets Facebook all the capabilities of Gtalk or Google chat. Unless Google Me has out-of-this-world features, Facebook seems set to be on top for some time to come. Google Instant Bans Kamasutra, Pamela Anderson, And Paris Hilton

by Paul Joseph September 30, 2010 Featured

Google Instant was one of this first in a long list of “Instants”. Those to follow Google include YouTube and iTunes. Google has always let users search for anything on the internet and censorship was not really an item on the to-do list. But with Google Instant, they have taken a more cautious approach and do not show suggestions for “banned” words. So if you were to search for a word on the banned list, Google Instant will stop suggesting after a certain letter in the word. What this would ensure is that the user will get a word, like pornography for example, only they type the entire word. Upside Many might argue that this is no censorship at all as a user can still search for pornographic content and still get search results for it. But the whole point is that Google Instant is not suggesting that the user watch porn. How many times have you searched for Hurricane Katrina and ended up ogling at pictures of Katrina Kaif? This “ban” will definitely make users more focused . On a more serious note, underage users will not be prompted with search results on adult content which is definitely a plus point. Downside Unfortunately, Google has blacklisted a lot of words which is bound to create some controversy. Bisexual, gay, and lesbian have made the banned list, which though may make sense looking at it from Google’s perspective considering the adult content the search can generate, activists for these groups might take offense to this ban. Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton have also made the list; guess making home-videos never helped anyone . You can take a look through the entire banned list here . Do let us know what you think about this blacklist. Looking for a Social Media Agency? SEBI Regulations Push More Mutual Funds Online

by Paul Joseph September 29, 2010 Featured

For so much hoopla about online businesses and the advantages of going onto the web, it was VERY surprising that highly dynamic entities like stock markets and investment activities hadn’t taken to the internet earlier. We, recently, tracked the mobile trading proposal and implementation . Now, mutual funds are going online in a major way. The mutual fund industry came about for those who do not have the time or the risk appetite to actively invest in the equities market. It basically pools in money from multiple investors and then an expert (the fund manager) invests in securities. So, if you feel you are not competent enough to take a call on the markets but do want to invest there, mutual funds are a good option. Friendly reminder – “Mutual funds are subject to market risks. Please read the offer document carefully before investing”. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), last year, passed a new regulation which cut the distributors margins drastically. There are a lot of mutual fund companies which cannot make themselves visible enough to generate enough investment. Distributors step in here and are responsible for the marketing and selling of shares of the mutual fund company. SEBI’s rule was that investors will pay separately for the commission of the distributor and the investment amount to the asset management company. Read initial reactions here . With SEBI continuing to pass regulatory changes to bring down investing costs, distributors are losing incentive to acquire more funds as their revenues have taken a hit. However, they are seeing the online mode as a genuine low cost service delivery platform. Of course, the investor benefits by getting an organized paper-free way of investing while always being connected to multiple sources of information via various websites. As an enthusiast in investment culture, it cheers me up significantly. I completely support the gradual movement of equities markets towards online platforms, even mobile trading. Our markets are not too mature and have seen sharp movements based on speculation far too often. Additionally, brokers and distributors dish out advice, quite a few times, keeping margins and commissions in mind. A lot of investors are not focusing on the fundamentals of companies whose stocks they are investing in. They blindly take the broker’s word and don’t even question the premise on which they are making investment calls. When models start shifting online, investors have a large pool of information to refer to and this will help them make informed decisions. There will be multiple takes on company performances and they will have a better picture before investing. Stock markets will, then, shed a lot of the “gambling” tag mindlessly given to it by investors who chose to play on speculation and lost a lot of money. This will, also, build up character in the investment culture prevalent in India. Looking for a Social Media Agency? Cybercrime on the Rise – India, Most affected

by Paul Joseph September 29, 2010 Featured

It is quite disheartening to put this fact across that India has been prone to Cybercrime for a long time now and the burgeoning effect of this is very devastating with as many as 76% of Indians having fallen victims to cybercrime according to a report – ‘ Norton Cybercrime Report : The Human Impact ’. It is even more overwhelming to know that globally the affected populace includes 65% of internet users and in that over three-quarters of Indian web surfers are victims of cyber attacks. This personifies India to feature in the not so elite panel of countries that are most affected by Cybercrimes; 2nd to China. Even the Indian Army was once under extreme Cyber Terrorism attacks and still is. However, certain steps have been taken to control and eradicate the same. However, the same kind of method to control and eradicate Cybercrime in the country is not full proof and the details and figures are out that prove this fact. The report on ‘Norton Cybercrime Report – The Human Impact’ comprises of several facts and figures. However it also has inferred details on the emotional reactions of Indian web users who are constantly under cyber attack – • 58 per cent of the victims feel anger. • 51 per cent feel cheated. • 46 per cent feel annoyed/ upset. • 57% feel Cybercriminals will not be prosecuted at all. Security Issues – There are always many hassles that the security system in India faces as attackers easily find a way to sneak in and do their cyber crime act and benefit from the same. Hence the entire security system seems to be flawed. Numerous bank consumers end up losing money either directly or through pass-along costs from our financial institutions and banks. How? Cyber Criminals use their skills and gain access to accounts and steal small amounts making them undetected and go scot-free. Ironically the blame is reversed on the consumers stating “Most people don’t even report a cybercrime which is very critical”. It is not like this is a crisis that holds no way out. There are quite a few solutions to the existent problem of cybercrime, at least for the domestic users. Many users do not possess the need to protect themselves and their systems feeling that such a step could be very complicated and this perception of people needs to be changed. Users need to take basic and simple steps to eradicate this predicament like having up-to-date, comprehensive security software in place. There needs to be some sort of an initiation from the user towards managing this cybercrime, hence enabling the reduction of cybercrime rate in the country. Looking for a Social Media Agency?
