Intel Weds Infineon – Could This Be A “Merger Made In Heaven” ?

by Paul Joseph September 1, 2010 Featured

Intel Corporation , the firm that claims to be the “Sponsors of Tomorrow” definitely wants to prove so with another acquisition up its sleeve and the incumbent takeover would be of Infineon – an organization whose primary segments include automotive, industrial, chip card and security solutions with wireless system solutions and applications in communications encompassing its major market offerings. Intel, lately is undergoing a buying spree as far as acquisitions are concerned and its recent buy out was of McAfee that resulted in Intel shelling out an amount of 7.7 billion dollars. Intel would be purchasing the wireless unit of Infineon named WLS for 1.4 billion dollars hoping that it could bolster its position in the Smartphone market. WLS is a mobile phone chip maker and its mobile chips are majorly found in Apple Inc’s iPhones as well as cell phones made by Nokia and LG. Intel had achieved superior sales in the low – cost, no – frills netbook market with its Atom mobile chips, however could not capture the Smartphone market. This merger could prove fruitful for Intel whereby it can compete with Qualcomm and Broadcom Corp with the hope of becoming a leader in the mobile chip manufacturing industry. Both companies are said to have agreed to the fact that the mobile unit WLS would remain as a standalone business. Albeit, Infineon shall not be kept completely isolated from Intel. Intel’s rival firm ARM whose product offerings are allegedly more power-efficient than Intel’s products and services has apparently created a dent in Intel’s third-quarter revenue reports along with weakening consumer demand for PCs. Infineon will prove to be the best thing that happened to Intel in the mobile space, but there are always two sides to a coin and the catch here is that there would be consumption of a lot of time (three or even four years) that need be spent in R&D. The acquisition is also seen as a way for 4G lift-off wherein Intel’s wireless offerings, Wi-Fi and WiMax are enhanced through Infineon’s 2G and 3G cellular capabilities. There has apparently been close to 200 billion dollars worth of mergers and acquisitions that has taken place in the last one month. But it is essential to mention that no matter what the amount spent, an acquisition deal would prove to be profitable only if it serves the purpose of filling an existing gap. In this case, the acquiring firm Intel’s primary aim was to expand into the Mobile Chip manufacturing market and hence diversify. However, it needs to be seen if Intel’s purchase of Infineon is a match made in heaven or not. Looking for a Social Media Agency? Organize Your Gmail Inbox Through Google Priority Inbox

by Paul Joseph September 1, 2010 Featured

Are you one of those who feel overwhelmed, just looking at number of mails received in the (gmail) Inbox? Well, if you are not an Email person, you might want to overlook them but if you are amongst those individuals who run on Emails, there is no other option but to arrange them. And this can be time consuming. But now, Google is coming up with a new solution called Priority Inbox to help you manage and organize your Emails. Click here to view the embedded video. How will it Work? Priority Inbox will split your inbox into three sections : Important and unread , Starred and Everything else . So, instead of merely showing the unread e-mails in the inbox, the first section will show priority e-mails which require your attention. As e-Mails come in, Gmail will automatically flag them as Important and will put them at the top of the email queue. Gmail will use a variety of signals like sender information, people you email most, your actions including replying, using stars, archiving, deleting to categorize your mail. Even the words contained in the mail will be used in predicting the importance. The second section will show those mails which have been read and marked by you for future references. This will make sure that these marked mails don’t get pushed over to the next page upon the arrival of the not-so-important mails. The third section will show the rest of your unarchived inbox. You will also have the option to assign the importance to your mails by using ‘important’ and ‘not important’ buttons. And as you use these buttons, Gmail will get better at categorizing these mails for you. Customization According to Google, priority inbox will be highly customizable. You will be able to limit the number of messages seen per section, hide or add a section altogether or even turn the priority index off. These options will be available through the Gmail settings menu and also in the Gmail interface. Availability Google plans to roll out Priority Inbox to all regular Gmail accounts and Google Apps users over the next week. According to Google however, Limited support will be available for those who use Gmail (gmail.com) in the web browser on Android or Apple devices Gmail using the built-in email program (IMAP or Google Sync) on most devices. Usefulness of Priority Inbox Priority inbox will certainly prove to be useful for so called Gmail Power users. Though Gmail filters are used by some users for managing their e-mails but even these filters have certain limitations. Priority inbox will address these limitations by categorizing and organizing the mails by itself so that the user spend more time in reading them and less time in trying to locate them. If the functionality works the way it is advertised by Google, It will certainly allow users to be in control of their e-mails. Priority Inbox can change the way you access your Gmail. What do you think? Looking for a Social Media Agency? Blackberry Gets Reprieve, Google And Skype In Danger Zone.

by Paul Joseph September 1, 2010 Featured

Search giant and VoIP pioneer join RIM on the list of tech companies facing sanctions on the subcontinent. Having given RIM a 60-day reprieve from a ban on Blackberry messaging traffic, Indian authorities have now set their sights on Google and Skype . As they did with RIM, authorities in the country are demanding access to data that flows across Google’s and Skype’s servers . BlackBerry’s owners, Canada based Research in Motion, were given time to assess the feasibility of the interception solutions they had offered. The solutions covered BlackBerry Enterprise Server as well as BlackBerry Messenger, the two services that so far cannot be intercepted by intelligence agencies, and which they fear could be misused by terrorist elements. The Home Ministry had told the Telecom Ministry that if the security concerns were not addressed, the service should be stopped immediately. The smart-phone-maker has a subscriber base of one million in India. To ward off any insinuations that it was targeting BlackBerry services alone, the ministry has decided to widen its net and ask other firms like Skype and Google to also provide access to their instant messaging services. A new voice feature just added to Gmail is what put Google in the Indian government’s crosshairs according to some trade analysts. “These concerns have been addressed in other parts of the world, I see no reason why the Indian government and agencies should take any risk at all as far technology is concerned,” Minister of State for Communication and IT Sachin Pilot told reporters. However, Pilot made it clear that the government was not in the business of shutting down services. “We are not in the business shutting down services,” he said. The Indian home ministry wants BlackBerry, Google and Skype to set up servers in India, a government source familiar with the matter said Monday. This ongoing issue has resulted in BlackBerry sales drop in India as consumers turn wary. Their sales have declined in recent days as customers find it dicey to invest in Blackberry phones. RIM’s rivals Apple Inc and Nokia would be among the biggest gainers if India blocks BlackBerry services. Both firms are waiting to gain share in a market that has been mostly dependent on BlackBerry. Skype and Google Talk are both encrypted end-to-end, so intercepting communications is extremely difficult. A Google spokesman told the BBC it had not yet received any communication from the government. Although it has been reported that Google is proposing setting up a server in India as part of the solution. Do you believe the Government is justified in making such demands?
