Google’s Chrome browser development team has a reason to celebrate. It has just surpassed Firefox becoming number two in the battle to overtake Microsoft’s Internet Explorer which is still the world’s most popular browser. Recently aggregated statistics from Net Applications indicate that Chrome is steadily gaining acceptance & surpassing even Firefox. According to StatCounter’s research arm, StatCounter Global Stats, Chrome had 25.69 percent of the global browser market in November, whereas Firefox was slightly behind with 25.23 percent share. Launched in 2008, Chrome had just 4.66% share same time in 2009. It has certainly grown in leaps & bounds . The battle is not between Firefox & Chrome though feels Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter, who says, “ We can look forward to a fascinating battle between Microsoft and Google as the pace of growth of Chrome suggests that it will become a real rival to Internet Explorer globally .” He further confirms that these are real usage statistics, “ Our stats measure actual browser usage, not downloads, so while Chrome has been highly effective in ensuring downloads our stats show that people are actually using it to access the Web also .” Internet Explorer, though still rules the roost with a healthy 40.63% market share. Ironically, there is a parallel war within Internet Explorer itself with IE8 at 28.2% , IE9 at 10.25% & IE6 at 8.03% . Can growth in usage be attributed to the rising use of cheap phones & not-so-cheap laptops , having Android OS developed by Google itself?
