Over the last couple of years of Social Media’s existence we have noticed some differences in the way men and women use social media. It started with equal usage all around during the times of Orkut and the early years of Facebook but we are starting to see some divergent trends here. Pinterest is one key example I would like cite in this regard. The visual nature and its easy ‘Pinning’ mechanism are clearly a favorite with the ladies worldwide. Another example of the divergence is how services like Google+ and Reddit are the last great strongholds of geekdom. Geeks generally show a higher propensity of being male. Source: Getty Images Although there is not much data available for Indian users in terms of gender, we can safely say that Facebook and Twitter are used equally by the sexes. The Pinterest phenomena exploded on my Twitter timeline when many of the women I follow started obsessively using the service. It has calmed down now with the occasional repin here and there. This is by no means a measure of Pinterest’s global success/downfall. It just shows how Pinterest has kinda slowed down in the country. Hardcore Indian geeks (coders, scientists and Google fans) are still hooked to Google+. Google+ is actually an excellent platform and should ideally see more usage from people of both the sexes. Facebook is a mixed bag as it is what you would call ‘mainstream’. I am not being a hipster or anything, but I would like to point out that in the Indian context niche social networks are not that many. Twitter has a fairly decent number of people from urban areas in India (in addition to trolls). As with Facebook, Twitter also seems to have equal number of men and women on it (This is speculative and solely based on my explorations of the service). Here is an excellent TED video of Johanna Blakely who argues how the rise of Social Media is effectively breaking down gender stereotypes and presumptions. We caught this infographic floating on the web and thought that you might find this data interesting. The infographic is consistent with Johanna’s argument and has other counter-intuitive gems like men being the best marketers for cosmetic products and women being more effective marketers in the field of ranching ! The infographic has been made by Digital Flash NYC . So, what are your thoughts on this? Share them with us.
