Apple’s iTunes Store Has Now Officially Come To India

After having kept Apple users in India waiting for the service since a long time, the company has officially launched the iTunes Store in the country. The store has also launched in Russia, Turkey, South Africa and 52 other countries. Apple users can now use the store to download music, videos, films from Apple’s plentiful ecosystem of digital media. The company has also announced that users will be able to sync their downloaded music and content to Apple’s iCloud at no extra cost. User who have bought their music on other platforms will have to pay somewhere around Rs.1200 per year for using the iCloud services. Users will also be able to buy and rent movies from major Hollywood studios. The iTunes store can be accessed via Apple’s devices and Windows. Tie-ups with Indian music labels like Sony Music India, Saregama, T-Series, YRF Music and others have resulted in a wealth of Indian music which will be available for download via the service. The good thing about the store is the pricing which has been adjusted, keeping the Indian user in mind. A typical song on iTunes ranges between Rs.7 and Rs.15 thus bringing it closer to Flyte’s pricing. Apple mentions that users will be able to buy DRM free music in 256 kbps quality for all songs. There is also Genius feature which arranges your music into genre-based mixes for you. Here are some screenshots: This is a good development for Apple and iTunes users in the country. I don’t really know why iTunes coming to India was delayed this long. The iTunes store might give some serious competition to Flipkart’s Flyte because there are many who use iPods in the country. The iPhone is popular in the country but I don’t think it enjoys the kind of traction that other phone platforms have in the country. The availability of the store on Windows may convert many people to use it instead of Flyte. However, Flyte can be accessed from any device which supports a web browser, so that they have an advantage there. Flipkart has announced that a user can re-download their purchased music as many times as they like, even though their FAQ section maintains that music can be re-downloaded 3 times.
