India Added 88 Million Internet Users Between 2008 & 2012: Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byer’s Report

Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byer’s Partner Mary Meeker’s report on the internet and its proliferation, growth, future is eagerly awaited and analysed by internet enthusiasts around the world. This year, the report has put forth some intriguing trends and foresight.  The report consist of some 90-odd slides – which have been gleaned from it facts/changes/styles that make for interesting information. Between 2008 and 2012, India added 88 million internet users (11% population penetration) coming second only to China who added 282 million (40% population penetration). As of Q4 of 2012, China has 270 million smartphone subscribers whereas USA has 172 million, thereby ranking 1st and 2nd respectively. Japan ranks 3rd with 78 million and Brazil 4th with 55 million smartphone users. India has 44 million smartphone users (only 4% of the total phone subscribers) and so ranks 5th.  Despite the rise in subscribers, global smartphones users are only 1 billion whereas 5 billion use regular phones. Android phones were adopted 6x as compared to the iPhone.  In India, mobile internet traffic surpassed web internet traffic.  Mobile apps and mobile advertisements are increasingly adding to revenues. The world has witnessed complete Re-imagination. The workings of phones, PCs, operating systems; the dynamics of connectivity (landline vs. mobile), information (books vs. e-books), etc. have altered greatly. Cloud technology has made it possible to go asset-light . Everything we need is on cloud – money, information, our contacts, etc – and easily accessible from anywhere. This particular asset-light trend is being driven by 20 year olds who are almost always ‘ connected ’ and ‘ live ’.
