5.7 Million Domains In Q3 Of 2012 Take Worldwide Tally To 246+ Million

The Dot Com boom doesn’t seem to have ebbed. On the contrary , there were more than 5 Million unique domain name registrations solely in the 3 rd Quarter of 2012. These additions now take the tally of total domain names in existence to more than 246 Million. “ Registrations have grown by 26.4 million, or 12 percent, year over year. The base of Country Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) was 104.9 million domain names, a 4.6 percent increase quarter over quarter, and a 20.7 percent increase year over year in the base ,” said the report. The .Com & .Net domain registrations continued to hold on to the pole position. There are now almost 120 Million domains in existence. Though the 7.8 Million new additions during this quarter is over 7% as compared to last year, it is just 1% over the last quarter. Of the two, .Com now has 105 Million unique names, while the rest belong to the .Net category. Domain names offer a unique address on the World Wide Web. Though singular unique names have long been snapped up within seconds of registration window opening, companies have for quite some time come up with great combinations of two or sometimes three words clubbed together. Companies still try vehemently to avoid any special characters within their domain names as these are a bit harder to remember than combined-word domain name. Interestingly, English words still rule the priority list, despite the fact, that ICANN has allowed the domain names in the regional languages . The main criteria for sticking to the language is the fact that Search Engines like Google still give precedence to English when it comes to collating & offering search results. Interestingly, despite the high number of domain names in existence today, Verisign’s average Domain Name System (DNS) daily crossed 65 Billion queries with a peak of 102 Billion. This simply proves that the Dot Com boom that we witnessed a few years, is now back with gusto. The question is; How long will it last this time ? Any hints?
