Samsung Reveals YOUM – The Flexible OLED Display Technology

Very recently, Apple and Samsung both released their latest phones that were supposed to have the best in mobile computing and smartphone technology. Several breakthroughs were made and the market again was the witness to innovative genius. Experts speculated relentless supply of such devices, which eventually happened in the form of Samsung camera and iPad mini. Now, the market is witness to what the tech-gurus are calling a tremendous feat in display technology – the flexible LED display. Samsung’s keynote speech at CES had Stephen Woo speaking about the prospects for the company’s growth, and subsequent technologies that affect the smartphone industry as a whole. There was ARM’s A15 that Samsung dubbed as the Exynos 5 Octa – an eight core processor that it pulled out of its hat. Samsung also displayed the green memory concept that it put into place but the show stopper was the flexible OLED display, called the YOUM display technology that Brian Berkeley from the San Jose display lab presented. He pulled out a device that looked like a tablet and folded the running HD display. Berkeley also demonstrated a prototype for the YOUM display that had folded sides wrapping around the edges to display incoming messages and emails while the device is lying down unattended. The demonstration was followed by a short video that depicted Samsung’s vision of the technology. Samsung recently stopped shipping the display that it made for Apple’s iDevices, right when there was speculation about iPad mini’s launch. The reason cited was mismatch of prices offered and not the seeming bad blood between the two organizations. It is noteworthy that Samsung supplies a large portion of Apple’s iDevice’s parts including the memory. Apple’s shares just dropped after iPad mini’s launch and Samsung is looking unstoppable with three new devices and three new technologies already out after S3 while speculations are rife about the launch of Galaxy S4. Apple was dethroned in the US as the biggest smartphone seller in the US. Is Samsung finally catching up to Apple to reclaim what it lost in the famous lawsuit in terms of sales and market share?
