The fact that DNA could store tremendous amounts of data was well known before. It does store a huge amount of genetic information. Now many people have wondered if we could store our data (digital files ) in DNA as it did sound plausible. Although this sounds doable in terms of theory, we are pretty sure that it is a huge and difficult task to carry out. This is why this new development is pretty exciting! A group of scientists working in Britain have successfully demonstrated that DNA can carry digital data. US based Agilent technologies encoded 154 Shakespeare sonnets, a photo, a PDF of a scientific paper, and a 26-second sound clip of Martin Luther King Junior’s “ I Have a Dream ” onto DNA in a test tube. This could be done because the researchers synthesized the DNA molecules and encoded binary into the 4 letter alphabet of DNA. The encoding must have been tedious! Once the encoding was done, the DNA package was shipped to another lab, EBI across the Atlantic. Here the researchers decoded the DNA step by step to recover the original constituents which amounted to 739 kilobytes. While this is amazing in its own right, the researchers have claimed that this process can be scaled to store upto 3 zettabytes . Thus you could store all the data on the earth at this moment in a DNA container which would fit in your hand. The only prohibitive factor is the high cost of synthesizing DNA. mechanism. This sounds like Sci-fi but the proof of concept is already here. What if tomorrow we could encode all our information onto our own bodies by tweaking bits of DNA or adding synthesized ones?
