The New BlackBerry App World Goes Live Ahead Of Today’s Blackberry 10 Launch

Ahead of the its very important Blackberry 10 launch later today, RIM has made their revamped Blackberry App World live. The new store has apps, games, themes, music and video offerings. The storefront has also seen a redesign which is frankly not all that great compared to iTunes and Google Play’s web storefronts. For RIM, today is crucial. They have been working on the new QNX based platform for almost 2 years and have faced delays. Many think that RIM might actually have missed the bus on this one but one can’t be sure. If the Blackberry 10 platform provides users and developers something new and innovative besides a solid platform, then the struggling company can still make a recovery. The app store currently seems to be live in Canada, US, UK etc. I checked out the Indian storefront and it was totally devoid of content. We don’t know for sure as to when BB 10 will launch in India and we expect the Indian content to go live then. Yesterday, we reported that RIM had tied up with Walt Disney, Sony Music and others to get content onto the platform in India. When I looked at the US version of the app store, I saw that there were quite a few apps that were available, although there were not many known names. According to reports, the app store now has around 70,000 apps which is a huge number for a launch. This is all because of RIM’s developer relation team which has been working ceaselessly to get developers to care about the platform. We have written about the port-a-thon that they organized recently, an online event which saw some 15,000 apps getting added to the platform in a matter of 36 hours. We are excited about the launch later this evening and will keep you updated on the developments. Stay tuned.
