HP Launches Connected Music, A Subscription Based Music Service

HP has launched its own online music service called “ Connected Music ” in India and it will be integrated into the company’s netbooks. HP India has collaborated with Universal Music India and Hungama .com, which itself is an online media company to provide premium music content to HP’s customers. It spans almost all genres and a catalog that comprises of approximately 20000 artists. Consumers will have access to unique content such as previews, behind the scenes, VIP events and many more, to connect with their favorite artists. HP will launch the service with its Windows 8 enabled netbooks. This service  would be embedded within the devices and the USP that it carries is that the subscription lets the users download free music on their devices for a year. Windows 8 and windows RT were developed keeping smartphones and hand held devices in mind. If played well, this service could attract the new HP customers but then apart from the claims of being a one touch download and comprehensive range of choices, I don’t really see HP’s value proposition and differentiation from other established services. There are a lot of similar streaming/digital media services existing on the internet which provide subscription based content. Saavn is going great and spreading its roots in the Indian market. Flipkart’s flyte is a unique DRM free service that lets users download encryption free content and share it with other people. Then there are the usual iTunes and official labels. HP’s attempt to venture in to selling music online (especially embedding it into netbooks) would just be another banal feature that tags along with a device. Rather than being a coveted service, it might just become a liability that it carries. HP’s Beats Audio might be a supplement to the package but if it’s a netbook, I would rather check out 10 different subscriptions every 10 months and see what each has to offer rather than being stuck with one service for a year. All of this considering piracy doesn’t exist which is definitely not the case.
