NDTV Plans To Launch E-commerce Vertical

E-commerce is taking off in a big way, and NDTV does not plan on being left behind. NDTV plans to merge its software application arm with  ndtv.com  and enter the e-commerce business. Some would say that NDTV is following in the footsteps of fellow media firms like Bennett Coleman & Co. Ltd and Network 18 Ltd. In a filing to the BSE, NDTV Worldwide Ltd, which is a subsidiary of the NDTV Network, has been granted the go ahead by the NDTV Board of Directors to venture into e-commerce. This is a good time to do that. Indians are starting to welcome the concept, there is a healthy market, firms are coming up which take care of the logistics. There are dedicated warehouses that are in place in major cities and there is skilled labor available to optimize the whole process. While both Indiatimes Shopping and Homeshop18 are horizontal e-tailers (that is they are not focused on any particular industry such as retail, but provide a broad range of services to an industry, like auction sites that allow multiple buyers to bid on a host of products by separate suppliers), nothing of the NDTV plan has been revealed as of yet but it would be prudent for it to concentrate on the big picture or the flat plan of being a big online retailer of a wide variety of products and then take small enterprises like satvikshop to extend its product line.  NDTV is also planning to consolidate two of its subsidiaries into one since they work on similar things. NDTV Convergence Ltd owns and handles the website  Ndtv.com   and NDTV Labs Ltd focuses on software application development in the broadcasting business. E-commerce is not a piece of cake as it seems or was 5 years ago. Giants like Flipkart are introducing marketplaces in their system where people can buy and sell stuff so NDTV will have to play strategically, however, its size and outreach would supplement the venture.
