Google Joins Hand With Freesat To Launch YouTube On Television

Google owned video sharing platform YouTube will be available on television by the end of March; customers of the BBC and ITV-backed satellite television operators will be able to tune in to YouTube through their set-top box without manually linking the television set to the internet. Google has signed a deal with Freesat, UK based satellite TV service, to launch the YouTube TV channel by the end of next month . The channel will be available through a new television app on the free-to-air satellite TV service Freesat. This is going to be YouTube’s most effective strategy to make it to the small screen in the UK. Viewers will need a set-top box, but will not need to pay any subscription fee to watch the channel. The move will definitely boost YouTube’s growth. YouTube is already available to watch on internet-connected television through Apple’s set-top box or a Smart TV such as Google TV. The deal with Freesat will take it to a wider audience in the UK. The company has over 3 million of the devices in 1.7 million houses in the country. Seems YouTube has already completed the groundwork to satisfy the UK viewers. The video sharing platform launched 60 broadcast-style channels last year featuring programs by some of the most of popular production houses of the UK including Jamie Oliver’s Fresh One and BBS Worldwide. Peter Sherman, product marketing manager for YouTube, said : “ We’re happy to be working with Freesat so that Freesat users can now access YouTube from the platform. Our creator community is developing quality content that will delight and inspire viewers and we’re pleased to be able to bring it to people in new ways .” According to Emma Scott , Managing Director of Freesat, YouTube version on its platform was “previously unseen” on free-to-air TV in the UK.  She added that she was a “firm believer” that broadcast television had long way to go; however, viewers want to watch other types of content on the television as well. Hence, the deal is going to satisfy the demand of the viewers as well. In India, television is a huge industry. In 2011, 148 million Indian households were reported to have television sets.
