Indian Government Surprised Over Alleged US’ Global Data Capture Efforts

Following the uproar over alleged secret efforts by the United States of America (USA) to collate & sift through data of global netizens, the Indian Government appears to have initiated a formal approach to seek more information. Why is India concerned? Evidently, Indian Government too is not without its own agenda when it comes to keeping a close watch on internet activity. It had recently initiated a nation-wide project called Central Monitoring System (CMS).  Though CMS may not be on the massive scale being alleged by net watchers about US’s PRISM, it is nonetheless an equally potent tactic to watch online activities for potential terrorists’ threats . PRISM on the other hand appears clearly intended to monitor customers of participating corporations who live outside the United States. In this case, the participating corporations seem to be Google, Apple and Facebook who effectively have links with most of the global internet users. India still wouldn’t have bothered, but the leaked fact that this country was “ The fifth most tracked country by the American intelligence which used a secret data-mining program to monitor worldwide internet data ” has put the country on high alert. Furthermore, a reputable USA newspaper claimed to have scoured top-secret documents about US’ National Security Agency’s ( NSA ) data-mining tool, called ‘Boundless Informant’ that revealed, the program gathered almost 100 Billion pieces of information. Out of this intelligence data, Iran topped the list with 14 Billion followed closely by India’s neighbor Pakistan with 13.5 Billion. India was fifth on the list with 6.3 Billion pieces of information. Countries like India, USA & others had in the past chosen to take the official route of approaching the internet companies like Google , Facebook, Twitter , etc. to either seek or obliterate data. But clandestine activities about national security especially involving electronic surveillance are recently being unearthed. Are internet users losing their privacy?
