Online Classifieds Is Seeing Good Traction In Small Towns And Rural India

While we are distinctly aware that the Internet is slowly trickling down to small towns and rural India, we were not really sure about the manifestation of that technology in terms of enabling commerce in the region. All e-commerce firms have had one common observation over the last few months – internet users from small towns and rural areas are increasingly buying stuff online . Digital content consumption is also growing . According to a report in IndiaTimes, users are now trading in livestock online, an example of this being this online ad which is dated from March, 2013. People are now using online services like Quickr and OLX to trade in farm animals and even though this might be a little strange to hear this at first, you will soon realize that this demonstrates the power of the medium and how it can empower people to do  business better. Quickr and OLX, which are both popular Indian classifieds services are seeing increased traction from rural areas and small towns in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam. This is what has been getting people to trade in their farming goods, pets  and livestock over these platforms and I believe that this is quite an unexpected but innovative use of the platform. The companies are also saying that they have come across postings on their site relating to random things like bombardier jets, antique Rolls Royce cars etc. This just points to one thing – the internet is getting accepted in rural and small town India as a utility that can facilitate trade and commerce. This is big deal since low Internet penetration has always been a hurdle for online companies, especially e-commerce companies which had to resort to mainline advertising channels to promote their platforms. Their efforts are paying off it seems and now a huge untapped market is waiting to be opened.
