I like how an increasing number of foreign startups are seriously considering India a potential market where they can expand their business. NextBigWhat is reporting that the popular and disruptive US online car rental startup, Uber may be looking to expand its operations to India. This inference is based on the job listings that the company has posted on its website. Uber is looking to hire a Community Manager, General Manager and an Operations and Logistics Manager based in Bangalore. The nature of these jobs indicate that Uber has a plan of coming to India soon. And why would they not? The online car rental industry in India still has a major potential to grow. There are startups like Olacabs , Easycabs, Savaari etc. which provide a similar service to Uber and have quickly become popular. Uber’s entry into the country will help the company leverage its expertise and thus gain an edge over existing startups. Uber is known for providing dependable service generally and has grown fast over a short span of time. The company has been backed by Menlo Ventures, Jeff Bezos and Goldman Sachs. The startup currently operates its services in the major cities of the US, UK and in Paris. Inspite of its growth, things have not been rosy for the service in terms of taxi regulations. It has run into many problems with regulators in the US and has also had to suffer outages in service due to strikes. Taxi regulations in India are not exactly easy, according to NextBigWhat and Uber will definitely face challenges when it comes to providing services which are disruptive to the established monopoly of the taxi unions in Indian cities. There are political issues which progressive companies have to face regularly, case in point being Meru Cabs and its struggle to remain operational in Mumbai inspite of politically motivated union behavior. Progressive behavior among regulators is not very common here and it will be interesting to see how Uber tackles the bureaucratic and operational hurdles it encounters while doing business in India. If you are a looking for a job in a challenging yet fast growing startup, this might be your chance to do some good work. Apply for the Uber jobs on the link below.
