Tata Docomo to slash 2G, 3G Internet rates by 90% from 1 July

Tata Docomo has joined other prominent Indian telecom operators in slashing mobile data rates. It has  announced that it will be slashing 2G and 3G data ( only certain packs ) transmission rates by 90% . his data tariff cut will be applicable for GSM customers, with effect from July 1. The revised tariffs will be applicable on 2G data packs – RC (recharge coupons) of 126 (2GB for 30 days), 149 (2.5 GB for 30 days) and 249 (3 GB for 60 days) and 3G data pack – 255 (2 GB for 30 days). Once again, these rates will only apply to users who exceed their data pack limit and are charged extra for every byte they consume henceforth. Thanks to the rate changes, these users can continue to access high speed mobile internet by paying only 1 paise per 10 kb instead of the earlier 10 paise per 10 kb data. It might be noted that this price reduction in data services applies to 19 out of 22 telecom circles in the country, and will be offered only to the national roaming customers. “This (the offer) will increase data penetration across segments and a 90% discount will serve as a customer friendly yet clear differentiator for our customers,” Tata Docomo’s Head of Marketing  Gurinder Singh Sandhu said in a statement. Indian telcos have been rushing to cut down 2G rates in the past week, and Airtel and Vodafone were the ones who had taken the lead. Later on, Idea too slashed its 2G rates in select circles. Price wars are great for the end consumer, and these moves will definitely lead to higher scale of mobile internet usage across the country, especially in rural and upcoming towns and cities. This could also be attributed to the fact that operators witnessed slow growth in overall user base last month. This has lead to greater competition among India’s telecom giants, and I’d like to see if the same gets extended for sectors such as network coverage and support service.
