Microsoft Opens Up Bing & Offers New APIs for Its Maps, Voice & OCR

Technology giant Microsoft is apparently showing signs of lowering defenses for its closely guarded products & allowing developers a more intimate experience with its inner workings. What are the company’s goodwill gestures? Bing has always been Microsoft’s answer to Google’s search. However, despite being a powerful algorithm in itself, Google’s offering has been far more popular & mainstream as against Microsoft’s Bing. Perhaps Microsoft has now learned its lesson of being candid & synergistic with developers is the true organic route if it wishes to enhance traction of its products shared Gurdeep Singh Pall, Corporate Vice President, Bing, “ Today we’re announcing a profound expansion of our approach to search by creating a platform that unites the intelligent services that power and by making these capabilities available to 3 rd party developers via new APIs and controls .” Accordingly, the core APIs of & for Bing will now be open to developers who can & will use Bing’s information sets related to people, places, things and actions in the real world. What it means for developers: Bing presently has four essential services which can be of immense help & assistance to developers who wish to bolster their products, but cannot afford to develop services as good as Microsoft. Bing’s expertise at deciphering characters; i.e. its Optical Character Recognition ( OCR ) control will now help developers to infuse this service directly within their applications . Additionally, written text to verbal conversion APIs (Text To Speech) are open to developers too. If that’s not all Microsoft has even opened up its Voice Recognition that is hoped, to eventually be used to control elements & applications within the newly updated Windows 8.1, besides bringing forth the impressive Maps SDK. To offer easier access, Microsoft has even created a Bing Developer Center . Will these acts of generosity & openness help the company in luring developers away from Google’s Android ecosystem?
