In a bid to sell air tickets for its proposed airline venture in India, AirAsia, the low cost Malaysian airline has partnered popular online travel agencies like MakeMyTrip  (MMT) and Yatra. As per the report, MMT has an almost six-month-old partnership with AirAsia for bookings on the international routes and is planning to sell the airline’s tickets on Indian routes going forward. A Yatra official confirmed that the company has already finished integration with the airline and sale of tickets for international flights is round the corner. AirAsia runs a joint venture portal with Expedia and it is an exclusive online distribution channel for the airline. The company had announced in April that it has entered into an exclusive partnership with the world’s biggest online travel agency to push sales. AirAsia too sells tickets directly on the international routes from India. About 85 per cent of AirAsia’s global sales take place through its own website. However, the association of AirAsia with MMT and Yatra has raised questions about its exclusive partnership with Expedia. “ As per our contract, we are exclusive and we would like to maintain that exclusivity,” Vikram Malhi, general manager, South Asia and Southeast Asia, Expedia, told The Economic Times. Another online travel agent Goibibo is also eyeing to integrate with the airline soon will start talks with the airline after it gets clearances from authorities. AirAsia India, a joint venture between the Malaysia-based low-cost airline, India’s Tata Group and investment firm Telestra Tradeplace, is expected to launch operations in the country by the end of 2013 with an initial investment of Rs 80 crore.
