Internet Users In Need Of Social Media Vacation: Study

More than 50 per cent of Internet users, suffering from social media overload, have either taken or have considered taking a “ vacation ” from social networking, a new US study has found. Extremely frequent and ‘ irrelevant ‘ updates and a lack of time are the top reasons people desire a break from Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or any other social network, researchers found. The study by the online organisation hub reveals that online users are becoming overwhelmed by the increasing number of social networks and email accounts they manage. verall, more than 40 percent of adult Internet users manage multiple social networking profiles, and more than half belong to more social networks or visit their networks more frequently than they did two years ago. Additionally, the average adult manages 3.1 email addresses, up from 2.6 a year ago. In total, 35 percent of those surveyed spend more than 31 minutes a day visiting social networking sites, and reading and responding to personal emails. “It’s universally accepted that people are living much of their lives online,” said Jeff Tinsley, CEO of MyLife. “Their Internet identities aretheir true identities, and they are spending an increasing amount of time managing all their connections and communications across multiple services, leading consumers to feel overwhelmed.” Despite their desire for a break, most social networkers are afraid of what would happen if they were to step away for a while. Nearly 60 percent of those surveyed experience anxiety as a result of missing an important event or status update if they don’t monitor their social networks, and more than half report a fear of missing out. The study was based on surveys of more than 2,000 adults ages 18 and older. I think the research study points towards an alarming trend, one that has simply gone ignored since quite some time now. A huge advantage of these social communities has a reverse side effect that is also a big disadvantage of social networking: they reduce or eliminate face-to-face socialization. Because of the autonomy afforded by the virtual world, individuals are free to create a fantasy persona and can pretend to be someone else. This leads to people individualism and people do not have a life outsider their virtual profiles. The youth is at a higher risk; hey are not spending  time in face-to-face interactions with their peers or others nor are they developing the necessary social skills for future success. Not much needs to spoken about the disorders and health problems social media addicts are prone to fall towards insomnia and introvert ism as well. Let’s hope this study enlightens the minds of those seriously addicted to social networks.
