iPhone’s Cheaper Iteration Could Outsell The Latest iPhone 5S; Tough Choice For Apple?

Apple Inc . had been rumored to be working on a cheaper version of the iPhone. Market analysts are already predicting a great success for the relatively affordable brethren, which in turn could seriously dampen the sales of the latest iPhone 5S. UBS , a market trend analysis firm with interest in the financial aspects of companies, is confidently predicting that when (not if) Apple launches it cheaper variant of iPhone; people would make a beeline for the same. While this is indeed good news for the company who had been feeling the pinch of Google’s growing dominance in the smartphone market with its Android OS, it could be a serious threat to Apple’s own line of iPhones. UBS analyst Steve Milunovich has mentioned that this cheaper version will account for more than half of smartphone sales of the company. While the cheaper version would be responsible for just 3% of the sales within this year, Apple could sell as many as 92 Million cheaper iPhones, in next year. This could seriously impact the sales of the next version which Apple launches regularly. Apple is said to be in the final stages of launching its  next version of the iPhone, simply dubbed the iPhone 5S. But since the iPhones are still relatively much more expensive than Android based smartphones, Apple had apparently taken a critical strategic decision of lowering specifications & coming up with a smartphone that would compete in terms of pure commerce. Rumors are calling the affordable model as iPhone Mini, iPhone Lite and, most recently, iPhone 5C. The phone is speculated to have a plastic shell instead of the unibody metal encasing that iPhone 5 has, a diminutive 4” screen, a slightly older generation A6 processor. However, the phone is said to have an 8MP back camera & will come in 16 GB & 32 GB versions. Perhaps the most interesting rumor surrounding the phone seems to be its availability in multiple colors & hues. Apple has never bifurcated from the two solid (Black & White) colors. But looking at the preference of the youngsters who like to flaunt phones with a colored body, Apple might have taken this decision. A cheaper iPhone could indeed be an interesting proposition to turn the tides . But the company is undoubtedly playing a huge gamble of diverging from its primary intention of offering stellar & uncompromised hardware. Do you think the company is right in doing so?
