Yahoo Acquires Mobile Video App Ptch

Another day, another Yahoo acquisition. This time the company is going for a video startup. Yahoo has scooped up Ptch, the DreamWorks animation-incubated mobile video start-up. Available on only iPhone, the app allows users create montage videos out of clips and photos.  “Today, we’re excited to announce that Ptch will be joining Yahoo! As part of the Yahoo team, we’ll be able to focus our efforts and leverage our technology to make Yahoo’s photo and video platforms the best in the world” , announced Ptch on a company blog post . Started by Ed Leonard and Hans Ku, the app lets users make stylized short videos, called ptches and share them with the Ptch network of users as well as on Facebook and Twitter. Ptch mobile video app was launched about a year ago and it let users remix their videos with effects and music. As expected, Ptch will shut down on January 2, 2014. Users can download their ptches on the company’s website or save them to their camera roll from the Ptch app on their phones. Yahoo has picked up more than 20 start-ups this year, many in the social and mobile worlds. Just yesterday, the company bought SkyPhrase, a natural language software start-up. But, it looks like Yahoo is trying to bolster its photo and video platform technology. It bought Qwiki app for turning photos and videos into short, edited movies, in July. Prior to that Yahoo bough iOS photo app maker GhostBird  in June. The company recently rolled out new video app Yahoo Screen for iPhone and iPad that allow users to browse across various categories of video programs. We think that Yahoo wants to build a complete media empire comprising of all the factors of the current internet ecosystem like search engine, mail, apps, games, blog, videos and photos. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how Yahoo intends to use Ptch’s technology to enhance its offering.
