Google India has officially announced the availability of the Samsung Chromebook in India. Chromebooks are Google’s implementation of netbooks which are easy to use and work faster than traditional netbooks. Chromebooks run on the ChromeOS which is a browser based interface. The company says that this particular Chromebook has over 6 hours of battery and is compact. It weighs 1.1 kg and measures 17.5 mm in thickness. The device has support for offline Chrome apps built into it. The device costs around Rs.26,990 and comes with 100GB of free Google Drive storage for 2 years. Google India has also partnered with internet providers like Tikona and Airtel to give customers a range of options to choose from when it comes to accessing the internet. The Samsung Chromebook is now available online on Flipkart and CromaRetail and will also be available at select Reliance Digital and Croma stores. The company has plans to make the Chromebooks available at these retail stores in five more cities – Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore, in addition to Mumbai and Delhi. Chromebooks are an interesting concept. While not completely bankable solutions when it comes to heavy professional and personal use like normal laptops, they are intended for users who only use the internet for work and play. While still not a significant competitor to other laptops brands, it does make a lot of sense for many people among us. The only downside seems to be the constant need to connect online. While there are apps that might work offline on the Chromebook, it can still be inconvenient especially in India where the internet reliability is not very good. Microsoft, has been roundly criticizing Chromebooks and Google in a concerted way, which many analysts think is because they are spooked by it. Still, Chromebook’s features itself limit its usage to some extent in the country. What do you think? Would you buy a Chromebook?
