Internet of Things Will Grow To 26 Billion Units; Be A $300 Bn. Ecosystem: Gartner

IT Research and Advisory firm Gartner , is confident that the present adoption rate for the internet enabled devices, is barely a precursor to the actual surge that will soon begin. The research company has estimated that within the next 5-6 years, the Internet of Things (IoT) will be a behemoth spanning more than 26 Billion devices and will be a US$ 300 Billion ecosystem. The Internet of Things is essentially a network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment. In their simplest form, these are smart devices who can intelligently communicate with each other, as well as, are aware and conscious about their surroundings. Despite popular notion, IoT excludes PCs, tablets and smartphones. So that leaves other electronic devices that will soon have the capability of external communications. Devices like the Gaming Systems , Eye Glasses , Apparel , Cars , Television , Watches , or even storage devices like closets will have the ability to be internally aware and externally communicable. In comparison, Gartner predicts that the number of smartphones tablets and PCs in use will be about 7.3 Billion. Hence the company expects the growth in IoT will far exceed that of other connected devices as the IoT will have expanded at a much faster rate, resulting in a population of about 26 billion units at that time. The firm is confident about its claims, because it has observed the boom in adoption of technology for purposes other than interpersonal communication. “ Companies are making high rate of adoptions in the fields of medical devices , factory automation sensors and applications in industrial robotics, sensor motes for increased agricultural yield, and automotive sensors and infrastructure integrity monitoring systems for diverse areas, such as road and railway transportation, water distribution and electrical transmission. ” said Gartner. Connected devices is surely the next phase of evolved electronics. These devices, owing to the  falling prices of sophisticated sensors and easier availability of internet, have gained the ability to independently verify their state and communicate with a human, if in need of external inputs.
