Book Your Meals With Your Ticket Online via IRCTC

by Paul Joseph July 5, 2010 Featured

Travelling by train and worried about your meals en route? Well, no more! INDIAN RAILWAYS Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has started a new scheme of “Book a Meal” category on online booking service in which the passengers can avail their choice menu and food while they reserve their berth via E-ticket. WATBlog had earlier reported that IRCTC is on a high profit spree and is making a huge amount via air ticketing . Seems that they want to continue the good provisions in other services as well. To start with, the IRCTC has introduced the Book-a-Meal scheme through internet on Karnataka Express and Goa Express as a pilot project, an IRCTC spokesperson said. The payment is not taken online but on completion of delivery by the train pantry car staff in cash. The meal can be booked online from originating or enroute stations and the process is quite customer-friendly and gives all details including tariff, quantity and combination items with the main menu. The menu options are different on both the trains and range from the standard breakfast, lunch and dinner to a-la-carte vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. The items are reasonably priced like the previous Janta Meals and Jan Ahaars and range from Rs 10 for a veg-cutlet to Rs 30 for an egg biryani. The passengers can select from a detailed menu and the item and the quantity has to be selected. A print out of the order has to be retained by the passenger to be shown to the pantry people. The IRCTC maintains that once the pilot project is successful, the project would be extended to other routes as well. Google to Become e-Tourism Specialist! Acquires ITA for $700 million

by Paul Joseph July 5, 2010 Featured

Google has reached an agreement to buy ITA Software, a maker of air-travel flight-information software whose customers include major airlines and online travel agencies. Google will pay US$700 million in cash for the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based software vendor. According to Google, the acquisition will benefit passengers, airlines and online travel agencies by making it easier for users to comparison shop for flights and airfares and by driving more potential customers to airlines’ and online travel agencies’ websites. Google won’t be setting airfare prices and has no plans to sell airline tickets to consumers. Travel information searches make up a significant portion of Google queries, so the company wants to enhance its technology in this area, which is ripe for innovation, Google and ITA executives said during a press conference. “ITA’s very talented team has created an impressive product to organize flight information,” Eric Schmidt, chairman and CEO, Google, has said. “Their technology opens exciting possibilities for us to create new ways for users to more easily find flight information online, and we are looking forward to welcoming them to Google. More than half of all airline tickets are bought online, making this a very large business, but the user experience leaves a lot to be desired, which affects not only consumers but also airlines and travel agencies. Consumers often have to visit multiple sites to find the best deals, which constantly change”, he said. ITA, founded in 1996, counts among its customers American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Kayak, Orbitz, Southwest Airlines, TripAdvisor, United Airlines, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Microsoft’s Bing. The QPX technology from ITA is designed to organize data such as flight times, flight availability and ticket prices. Coming up with a better user experience will be “a big engineering challenge,” Schmidt said. The deal should allow Google to match innovations made by Microsoft Corp, whose recently re-launched Bing search engine has gained share by focusing on a handful of specific search categories like travel and shopping. With this acquisition, Google ensures from the outset a leading position in the market for tourist information. According to one industry expert, quoted by AP news agency, U.S. travelers will acquire for 45 billion dollars of tickets online. A sum that will rise to 59 billion in 2014. Facebook and Twitter- A Hit With Traffic Cops for Nabbing Offenders!

by Paul Joseph July 5, 2010 Featured

Social Networking sites, Facebook and Twitter have found their way to the Delhi Police. No, not for any malfunction case, but for nabbing offenders of traffic! In an effort to manage the traffic situation in the city during the Commonwealth games slated for October, The Delhi Traffic Police has come up with their pages on these popular sites in a bid to request the citizens to show their cooperation in doing their job. The only tool that you require to don your cop hat is just your cell phone camera! The offenders pictures- be it unregistered vehicle numbers, tinted glasses, riders without safety helmets, are posted on the site by the users and the case is registered with the DTP. Users post queries, complaints and suggestions and receive immediate responses from the DTP. One month on and the Facebook page has over 9000 fans where dozens of photos and videos are uploaded everyday. Twitter has over 850 followers. With so many “assistants” roaming around the city, offenders should not be surprised to get a notice for a violation committed when they thought no traffic cop was around. “It’s a big success. We get a lot of suggestions, complaints and comments. “Delhi Traffic Police has taken the first step and we will definitely reciprocate. I hope other departments and various public agencies also launch similar initiatives,” Ajay Chadha, special commissioner of police (Traffic), told IANS . The cops regularly post important information and appreciation of the user’s effort on the wall. So, the next time, you jump a red light or park in a No parking zone and have got away from the cops or the surveillance cameras, don’t have a reason to cheer.. Some other alert citizen ‘cop’ might have caught your offence! Most Commented Posts Paypal India Block Leaves IT Guys High & Dry – Need For An Indian Paypal? Airtel Digital TV Enables Live Recording Via Internet!

by Paul Joseph July 5, 2010 Featured

Just a few days back we covered Airtel’s launch of a mobile service that would enable subscribers of its digital TV service to record live TV shows by initiating the recording action via their mobile phones. In a further enhancement of this service the company has now launched a service that will allow the users to record live shows controlling this action via the internet. The service is available to users who have specifically subscribed to Airtel digital TV Recorder service. The procedure that currently users will have to follow on the internet is that they will log on to their Self Care account on www.airtel.in/digitaltv. They will be able to access the feature by clicking on “Program Guide” at the top navigation bar. This will lead to a grid view of channel -wise listing of programmes by time. The programs can also be searched by genre, channel, name etc. Clicking on the programs will give details and a recording option. The recorder has to be on the power on mode at home and the chosen programme will automatically get recorded. Airtel is only the second DTH player after Tata Sky to offer recording services. It offers a recording capacity of up to 100 hours and 160 GB hard disk currently and is equipped with an HDMI port which allows it to be connected the latest tv display panels in the market. Airtel and Tata Sky are in direct competition with each other and the market growth potential is promising. Globally more than 30% of the content watched by the subscribers in the UK, USA, Japan and Australia is recorded television rather than live television. Moreover it has been observed that 35-40% of the new DTH subscribers buy personal video recorders in global markets. Similar behavior is expected from Indian consumers. Lets see who wins in this race. What do you think? iXiGo Powers Flight Search On New Delhi And Hyderabad Airport Websites

by Paul Joseph July 2, 2010 Featured

In a new win for iXiGo, the company is now powering the travel search on the official websites for the Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport of Hyderabad. This will definitely help the company to reach out to a larger audience. This move is in conformance with the views Aloke Bajpai, founder of iXiGo outlined in an online interview last year. He said, “We are also working on the challenge of building connectivity and relationships with all international airlines flying from India in order to take our international flights product (in beta) to the next level and ready to be immersed into the core product.” He also went on to say that online travel agencies depended on flight transactions for a significant percentage of their revenues. Moreover iXiGo considers as one of its major strengths in being able to reach out to those consumers who can shell out Rs.10000-20000 for air tickets and accommodation. IXiGo is of the opinion that patronizing this relatively elite group of consumers is their niche and helps in gaining efficient returns. Last year itself it claimed that its flight engines caused 2% of online transactions in India. Therefore it is clear that the company considers flight travel as a very promising segment for the company and has been working to develop enhanced search engines for the same. They are employing a meta- search based engine for the new websites, which is relatively new in India though it is used quite commonly in international systems. The new websites have a good interface. The flight search listings are comprehensive offering the required options for customizing the search options such as arrival times, departure times, price range of tickets etc. Same can be said about the hotel search listings as well. Its services can further add value to the traveler by combining its search capabilities regarding bus and other modes of transport within the respective cities and all modes connecting the city to other smaller places. This deal will help iXiGo in increasing its customer base. Lets hope that its search engines will result in a better user experience. What do you think?
