Travelling by train and worried about your meals en route? Well, no more! INDIAN RAILWAYS Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has started a new scheme of “Book a Meal” category on online booking service in which the passengers can avail their choice menu and food while they reserve their berth via E-ticket. WATBlog had earlier reported that IRCTC is on a high profit spree and is making a huge amount via air ticketing . Seems that they want to continue the good provisions in other services as well. To start with, the IRCTC has introduced the Book-a-Meal scheme through internet on Karnataka Express and Goa Express as a pilot project, an IRCTC spokesperson said. The payment is not taken online but on completion of delivery by the train pantry car staff in cash. The meal can be booked online from originating or enroute stations and the process is quite customer-friendly and gives all details including tariff, quantity and combination items with the main menu. The menu options are different on both the trains and range from the standard breakfast, lunch and dinner to a-la-carte vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. The items are reasonably priced like the previous Janta Meals and Jan Ahaars and range from Rs 10 for a veg-cutlet to Rs 30 for an egg biryani. The passengers can select from a detailed menu and the item and the quantity has to be selected. A print out of the order has to be retained by the passenger to be shown to the pantry people. The IRCTC maintains that once the pilot project is successful, the project would be extended to other routes as well.
