iPad Buzziest Tablet Brand Online, Says Survey

by Paul Joseph February 1, 2012 Featured

Apple iPad dominated the buzz about tablets on social media in India, according to a survey conducted by NMIncite, a Nielsen McKinsey company. iPad managed to garner more share in online conversations ahead of Android tablets, reports Times Of India. iPad had 55% buzz online, while Android tablets managed to capture 40% share. The survey tracked all online mediums from India for second half of the year 2011. Samsung Galaxy Tab was the highest buzz-getter in Android tablets, while Motorola Xoom, Reliance Tab and ultra-cost Aakash also featured on the list. “Even though Apple has not made a big push to promote and sell the iPad in India, it has already generated tremendous buzz online,” said Farshad Family, managing director, Nielsen Media- India. The survey also studied the category of smartphones. Android was the clear leader in this category. Android-based smartphones managed to garner 41% buzz, compared to iPhone’s 27% and BlackBerry’s 14%. But, this was actually lower than its 45% share for the first half of 2011. According to analytics’ firm Canalys, Apple overtook Hewlett Packard as the largest vendor of personal computers in the world in the fourth quarter of 2011. This was riding on the back of the upbeat performance shown by iPad. Apple sold 15.43 million tablets in this quarter which was almost double of corresponding quarter from last year.   Looking For A Social Media Agency?? – Contact WATConsult – India’s Leading Social Media Agency Related Posts Google Demonstrates Motorola Tablet Prototype Samsung GalaxyTab comes to India Samsung Unveils iPad Competitor Galaxy – Should Apple Worry? iPad Sales Plunge As Kindle Fire Tops Holiday Wish-List: Time For iPad 3? BlackBerry Losing Its Grip On The Market Share?

by Paul Joseph January 31, 2012 Featured

Once, BlackBerry was the default choice of enterprise customers for their communication needs. But, that is changing fast, especially in the established markets like North America and Europe, according to a New York Times report .   Apple has captured a significant market share from Reserach In Motion (the makers of BlackBerry) in North America, where it once was a dominant player. Samsung is slated to do the same in the other established market of RIM i.e. Europe with its Android operating system. BlackBerry is still going strong in developing markets. But, it is finding it difficult to hold on to its market share in more developed countries. While Apple Inc’s iOS and Google Inc’s Android operating systems have captured a lot of imagination, RIM has failed to innovate in recent years. Hence, many enterprise customers are switching from BlackBerry to other platforms. According to a recent global survey on information workers by research firm Forrester, 27% smartphone users have Android, 26% BlackBerry and 24%, an iPhone. “ Android and Apple together are eating BlackBerry’s lunch ,” said Frank Gillett, a Forrester analyst. Last year,  Blackberry Servers had gone down , sending millions of people across the globe into a frenzy. the servers were down for 4days . after the issue was solved to make it up to the customers Blackberry maker RIM offered all the customers 12 premium apps free of cost . And recently it was also reported that both the CEO’s stepped down from their position. Was this a good news ot bad only time can tell? The one asset that RIM can still bank on is security. But, that won’t be for too long, since other players are also addressing this issue. Some of Samsung’s new phones, like the Galaxy S II, include extra security features for enterprise customers. The newest version of Google’s Android operating system, called Ice Cream Sandwich, has built-in encryption. RIM is aware of its problems and is taking a number of steps to address them. It recently brought a new CEO on board in the form of Thorsten Heins. Heins is betting big on BlackBerry’s new operating platform called BlackBerry 10 or BB10. But, this has also received a severe jolt, since the new OS won’t be ready before late 2012. Now, it’s hard to imagine that enterprise customers will be ready to wait for that long. Apple To Offer Digital Textbooks: Death Of Physical Copies?

by Paul Joseph January 24, 2012 Featured

The Education sphere just got interesting with Apple’s iBooks 2 ventures. Apple has already laid its hands on about  90%  of all textbooks in US controlled by the trio of publishers Pearson PLC, McGraw-Hill Cos Inc and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.  Learning  should be beyond classroom feels, Terry McGraw, CEO McGraw-Hill, “ Having textbooks on iPads will open up the market beyond high school and university students to everyday consumers. I think without a doubt this will open up a   learning agency   for anybody and   anywhere .” Its all about Economics isn’t it? Well, Yes & No. Physical Copies of textbooks are a market worth an estimated US$ 8 Billion . Apple, with its iPad, could really shake the market as these devices can go way beyond text & some still images. With presentations, slides, video & audio built right into the books, students & just about everyone can gain access to a wealth of knowledge that just can’t be delivered through a bulky textbook. McGraw Hill has confirmed that it will make about 30% of each book sold in iBooks 2. With 25% of the price of the book going in the printing & distribution, one can imagine how much the publishers plan to save when a single digital copy can be distributed to millions, without cutting down a single tree. Let’s face it, textbooks are “cumbersome”. Though the pricing appears a bit steep at 14.99 per book, the prices can sure show fluctuation based on demand & popularity. Our readers might remember Amazon, the chief competitor to Apple here too , had started a book lending program . Well, its all speculation for now. We wonder, with the likes of Aakash & Classpad , will textbooks through iPad make a breakthrough in India, even if  forced ? Google Get 200+ Patents From IBM: Gets Ready For Upcoming Lawsuit Against Oracle

by Paul Joseph January 9, 2012 Featured

The patent wars are heating up in every major software company around the world. A lot of companies are treading this path carefully. The only thing that makes sense is to hoard up as many patents as you can to fortify yourself against patent lawsuits and trolls. That is exactly what Google has done. They recently acquired 200 more patents from IBM which cover a wide spectrum of web services like email, server backups, database optimization, ad serving and mobile web page display. Google has gotten many patents earlier from IBM last year. There is one more important patent which deals with social networking and Google plans to use it to boost Google+ . They acquired more than 2000 patents during the period from June to December last year. Google is all set to buy Motorola Mobility to boost Android and its manufacturers and keep them safe from Microsoft’s and Apple’s patent litigation , pending an Anti-trust review. They are now lending these and other patents to Android manufacturers whenever they get sued for patent infringement. Recently, HTC lost to Apple on 1 count of infringement. Without Google’s support the damage would have been greater. Google is ramping up its defense against rival Oracle who have claimed that Android significantly infringes on their Java technology. The lawsuit is up for hearing soon. Google has claimed that rivals like Microsoft and Apple have conspired to attack Google’s mobile OS with bogus patents just to make to OS expensive to manufacturers. Microsoft still makes money for every Android phone sold by making manufacturer pay up for using the OS. The modern concept of patenting (especially software) is pretty messed up and paints a very confusing picture. My only argument here is that legal lawsuits, bogus patents and patent trolls make innovation very difficult in the software industry. HTC Looks Optimistic Even After Apple Win In Patent Case

by Paul Joseph December 22, 2011 Featured

Some days back we heard that Apple had won the hearing against one of its premier competitor HTC over 1 patent that Apple claims that the Taiwanese company infringed upon. HTC has now begun testing technology which will not infringe on Apple’s patents and they seem confident that this ruling won’t bring them down. HTC, however won’t have to go through these troubled times alone. They have banked solidly on Google by adopting Android and now Google is now helping them out on avoiding such legal issues again. Google’s merger with Motorola Mobility gives them a lot of crucial patents that Motorola had which it can then use to safegaurd Android and its partners from harm. HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou and Google’s Senior Vice-President for Mobile, Andy Rubin spoke to the media in the companies Taiwanese headquarters where they clarified the company’s stance towards the Patent ruling. Mr. Chou thinks that Apple is using its legal clout to stop innovation in many sectors of mobile technology. Earlier the patent count in the lawsuit was 20 which was then dropped due to their vague nature to 4 patents and HTC was found to infringe on one of those patents. Well, all this patent muck-up is probably a front for a bigger Android Vs. iOS fight. This can be gauged from the fact that Apple is also fighting legal battles against Samsung, another Android partner. Andy Rubin told the media “ This is just the beginning. It will play out in the next couple of years.” but he was optimistic there would eventually be “patent peace.” The stock market has also been kind to HTC as the stocks rose because of the knowledge that this patent ruling would not affect HTC much. Another reason for the rise is that the Taiwan Government has stepped in and authorised a state fund to boost the market. During the course of the drawn out case, the stocks were taking a beating but now since HTC has got some breathing space, the rise of stocks is expected. Besides these patents, HTC has a lot of competition in the mobile phone segment to deal with after the success of Samsung’s Galaxy line of products. Inspite of this, Peter Chou is confident about the company’s future. HTC had made its debut in India earlier this year with their ‘ You ’ campaign. They need to focus on India more as it is turning out to be a growing smartphone market. In India, Android has overtaken Nokia’s Symbian OS recently and that makes the market very competitive. There have been arguments against the present state of the patent system and how it might be harmful for innovation because most patents are so ‘vague and generic’ in nature. According you how should the patent mess be resolved? Tell us in the comments. IB School Kids Asked To Buy iPad 2; Aakash Not Good Enough?

by Paul Joseph December 15, 2011 Featured

In a typical one-upmanship, International Baccalaureate affiliated Podar International School has asked its students to buy an iPad 2 for “better educational experience”. In a move going to prove very profitable for Apple, parents have been asked either to source an iPad 2 on their own or buy one from the school’s bulk purchase scheme. Parents of kids as young as class II are not happy & feel they have been left out of the consensus. “ There has been no consensus on the issue among parents. I am opposed to the move as it will hamper, rather than aid a kid’s education .” Parents feel kids should be taught using the traditional methods instead of giving expensive gadgets at such a tender age. Some have even gone to the length of threatening withdrawal of their wards from the school as they feel, “ it’s a purely a money-making racket .” Though the school later tried to pacify the parents by saying, that those not ready to invest in the expensive tablet can continue using the interactive board as usual, damage had already been done. However, with technology entering so rapidly in our busy lives & parents constantly on their expensive tablets & wonder-phones , why should not the students be given the opportunity. When “A” used to be actually written, it was OK, but with the pace so blisteringly fast, kids could simply press a key or a screen to get that alphabet. However, WHY only Apple? School’s justification: “ One, we have a parent working for Apple and, two, the iPad2 has the best applications ” .  Right ! We ask, why not Android tablets which are available right across the price segment? Apple To Change iPad Name Or Face Heavy Fine In China

by Paul Joseph December 8, 2011 Featured

Apple Inc, one of the most trigger happy companies around when it comes to lawsuits, may finally be getting a taste of its own medicine. While their tablet, the iPad, may be leading the market in terms of market share, apparently its name as ‘iPad’ cannot be used anymore in the most populated country in the world: China . Apparently, the name ‘iPad’ was already copyrighted in 2000 by Proview Technology (Shenzhen), a subsidiary of Hong Kong Proview International Holdings Limited. Apple had purchased the right to use the name in Taipei by paying them $35,000 , but according to the lawsuit they did not have the right to use it in Mainland China . Says Huang Yiding of the Hejun Vanguard Group,”A pple’s actions are strange. They had not obtained the rights to use the ‘iPad’ trademark when they began to sell the iPad on the Chinese mainland in September last year. Their copyright infringement is very clear. The laws are still there and they sell their products in defiance of laws. The more products they sell, the more they need to compensate ,” Yesterday, a local Chinese Court passed a verdict in the legal battle: Apple will have to either: 1. Stop selling the iPad under that name and change the product’s name in China 2. Pay Proview a sum of $1.6 billion for the rights to the iPad name in China. Apple may appeal this decision in a higher court, but as the situation stands, the case was ruled against them. It is not clear whether Apple will have to immediately modify the product name in China. Whereas, in India the iPad was one of the most recognized tablet in the market. In a world where Apple has been suing companies like Samsung left right and centre, and judges have mostly been ruling in their favor, this is against the norm.  It will be interesting to see how matters proceed.
