Smaller Operators Lead Pack As 7.5M New GSM Subscriber In December

by Paul Joseph January 23, 2012 Featured

India’s GSM Market has made analysts from around the world marvel at its growth. With Mobile Number Portability having been around for a year and 3G  networks being available on most providers, consumers are spoilt for choice. The larger operators like Airtel and Vodafone still lead the pack in terms of market share, and the two combined make up nearly half of the entire GSM Market. Newly released statistics  show that the largest growth spurt last month was not in the larger providers. In fact it was the smaller providers who showed the biggest growth.  Idea lead the way with a stunning 2.39 Million new subscribers in December 2011. Uninor too showed large growth numbers with 2.12 Million new subscribers added to their registers. Market leader Airtel came in 3rd place, with 960,000 new subscribers added. Vodafone came in 4th with 905,000 new subscribers in December. Aircel added an impressive 680,000 new subscribers and State Provider BSNL too bagged 400,000 new subscribers. With a total of 7.5 Million new subscribers added,  India’s total GSM subscribers went up to 639.64 Million, with a 1.2% increase from the previous month. As more and more users join each network, it is imperative that they ensure their network quality and reliability doesn’t suffer, as network reliability is one of the main reasons people sign up for a network.   How do you see the GSM Market heading? VoIP By Verizon Now Available In Asia Pacific. Commercial Hubs Can Cheer Up Now.

by Paul Joseph November 15, 2011 Featured

Soon large companies in India, Hong Kong & Singapore will be able to connect using, Verizon’s expansive global IP network. The VoIP network, unlike what BSNL is currently offering , is operated by Verizon Business & will enable commercial hubs of any multinational to have a unified communications network to improve efficiency & increase productivity , not to mention save a bundle on inter-hub calls! The Verizon VoIP portfolio seamlessly integrates network and Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) into a single platform, enabling businesses a simple, efficient way to transfer their voice and data services on to IP based technology at a speed they chose fit and irrespective of their current stage of IP roll-out. The ability to simply transition voice and data communications onto a converged IP platform is vital for organizations wanting to incorporate next-generation communications to meet their business objectives. Verizon has a much relied upon service called VIPER (VoIP IP Enterprise Routing), which is a cloud-based VoIP feature that eliminates domestic or international per minute calling charges for calls made between Verizon VoIP customers. Think of it as Skype-To-Skype Calls, but with much higher encryption & higher reliability focused solely for Enterprises and not available to general public . Previously, this was available only to the US & Europe, but now it is being made available (on pilot scale) for few chosen customers in this region. Another Verizon feature being introduced is Verizon’s proprietary Burstable Enterprise Shared Trunks (BEST) which shifts idle trunk capacity at one location to accommodate increased traffic requirements at another; a robust suite of business continuity services; centralized multisite, multi-country design architecture for additional network and cost efficiencies; T.38 faxing capabilities; and online self-service reporting capabilities. In other words, the system is smart enough to rapidly allocate idle bandwidth to maintain the high quality & reliability that Verizon is famous for. While Mobile companies like Airtel & Vodafone do have similar services , they are focusing on retaining customers ; Verizon Business has chosen a much less traded path of satisfying the large companies. Developers Think Out Of The Box To Earn From Mobile Applications

by Paul Joseph November 10, 2011 Featured

With 5000 applications available for free against every Paid one, App & game developers are contemplating new ways to earn cash from their creations. In the early days, apps were delivered through service providers, BSNL , Idea Cellular . Apart from problems of segmentation between different mobile phone operators which heavily curtailed their markets, there was a clear lack of transparency & arm-twisting, which resulted in loss of revenue. The many App stores that have evolved, namely Ovi from Nokia, Apple iStore, even Blackberry has one, has shifted the focus from Service Providers to handsets. This gives App developers a much wider scope as the consumer may shift a service provider in India, but the handset remains the same (Thanks to GSM!). The initial entry of the app developers into the lucrative world was due to the tremendous response these app stores received from the audience with downloads even surpassing 10 Million a day on Ovi & iStore & predictions of 1 83 Billion by 2015 (According to market analyst firm IDC). However, the letdown was the sheer number of free apps against the paid apps, which heavily diminished the earning capacity as against the efforts put in the development of the game or the app. This has propelled Developers to a new way; In-App advertisement & in-Game purchases. Thus even free apps, can be kept free & Pay-Per-Click & Pay-Per-Impression advertisements can help keep the revenue rolling in . Another method that has worked wonders is the in-game purchases; The swords, shields, power-ups, unlocks, bonus level can all be charged a micro amount per user & earnings, when aggregated, become a handsome figure. Twist mobile claims to earn US$ 30,000 Per month based on this formula. Now-a-Days, even hard-core programming is taken out by means of Software Development Kits being readily available . Guess, your apps & games, can continue to be labeled as “Free”? BSNL Rolls Out Voice And Video Over Internet Protocol (VVoIP) Services In India

by Paul Joseph July 20, 2011 Featured

BSNL , in association with Sai Infosystem (SiS) has rolled out voice and video over Internet protocol (VVoIP) service in India in a bid to beat the stiff competition from various private players and Internet Service Providers (ISPs), reports CIOL . To get the basics right, VVoIP is a service that supports switching technology and allows for voice and video communication via the medium of internet. For a successful communication to take place, these voice and video are converted into data packets and transmitted to a particular destination. Upon reaching the same, they are again converted back to the same voice and video. Another report from IndianTelevision.com hints to the fact that with this new service, customers can now call any telephone, mobile or internet protocol (IP) phone anywhere around the world, except in India. But for that to happen there should be video phone equipments at both the end otherwise only the voice call is possible. As of now, customers in India can just go for IP to IP calling within BSNL network. Over and above that, the service is coupled with industry standard Class 5 features like Call Hold, Call Transfer, Do Not Disturb, Call Forward, Mute, Caller ID / Name Display or Block, Call Waiting, Call Waiting Caller ID, ring tones etc. The call tariff rates that BSNL is offering for the service look quite attractive. Within India, audio calls will cost 40 paise per minute while video calls will be charged at Rs.2 per minute. For those who make frequent ISD calls, this is a sinful treat. While Calls to US and China will cost Rs 1.20 per minute, the same will be charged for land line phones in UK as against mobile phones, which will cost Rs 7.20 per minute. The monthly charge for availing the service has been kept at a reasonable price tag of Rs 150. BSNL is of the opinion that the service will certainly cut down the expenses of customers who use conventional video conferencing services. The state- run company is also in talks with leading international players for a tie-up to ensure that its customers have the best service at an affordable price. As of now the services will start from Ahmedabad and will consequently move on to the rest of Gujarat and then Maharashtra and Chhatisgarh likewise, before it reaches the entire country. Earlier this year, we have reported of BSNL launching Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) technology for lightning speed internet access in India.   BSNL is also currently working together with Railtel and Power Grid to quickly connect all 250,000 village panchayats to optical fiber. Moreover, it is the first company in India to launch data plans for Apple’s iPad . And it has a mobile app store coming its way soon. It appears that the state-owned telecom company is today leaving no stone unturned to rule the telecom and allied space, which of late, seems to have been saturated with many a private players. Will BSNL be successful in its endeavor? What do you think? BSNL Loses 1.3 Lakh Users To MNP

by Paul Joseph February 25, 2011 Featured

It has almost been a month since the pan-India rollout of Mobile Number Portability began and some Telecom operators have already started to face the heat from the churn created by the portability. And as it turns out, India’s state-owned BSNL is one of the players worst affected by the MNP. According to the latest figures , about 2.23 lakh subscribers have already left the BSNL network while 92000 subscribers have joined it. A simple subtraction operation shows that BSNL has lost about 1.3 lakh subscribers because of Mobile Number Portability. The plight of the other public sector telecom service MTNL is not much different. Since the portability was launched on January 20, MTNL lost 10,355 subscribers and gained 4,486 users. The Road ahead Incidentally, When MNP was launched, BSNL was one of the first company to come up with a slew of freebies for the users. These included options like forgoing of port charges, free SIM cards and talk time of Rs. 100 for the prepaid customers. But as the numbers indicate, these freebies have failed to create much traction with the current users. Nonetheless, at the price points on which these telecom companies operate, freebies were never a sustainable option. As such, for BSNL, without any substantial investment in network, technology and processes, the existing users continue to face the same old issues with network, coverage and tariffs. Thanks to the intense competition amongst these telecom operators, the margin of error has become very limited. And the modern day user has become smart enough not to be lured by some set of freebies. Given such a scenario, BSNL will have to do something special to offer innovative, competitive and affordable services for its users. Can BSNL do it? What do you think? Idea Cellular Launching An Online App Store Powered By Ericsson

by Paul Joseph February 11, 2011 Featured

Well, just 2 days ago we wrote about BSNL’s App Store . Now, there is news of Idea’s online app store being powered by Ericsson. It will be based on Ericssons eStore solution (see sample here ). They also plan to ’support the developer community’. Ambrish Jain, Director, Operations, Idea Cellular, said “The application store will offer a rich mobile experience through a combination of both web and mobile platforms. We are delighted to partner with Ericsson to develop the platform on the latest technology and content that will bring the best and relevant experience in mobile entertainment and information for over 84 million Idea subscribers in India. The store will also offer 3G applications when we launch our 3G services.” Gowton Achaibar, Head of Region India, Ericsson, said “Through our eStore solution and the model for Software as a Service, Ericsson brings together telecom operators, application developers and consumers. Allowing our Business Operations team to manage all relations and contracts and taking advantage of our existing partnerships with content aggregators and application developers, Idea is gaining a great business opportunity in the mobile application market.” The App Store is expected to have around 30,000 apps spread across paid and free categories. According to Ericsson ConsumerLab report “India Country Study 2010”, Indians’ cell phone usage is not restricted to voice and SMS. Data consumption is on the rise. Idea already has a cross platform mobile application – Idea Mobstore . Does every telecom service provider need to have its own ‘App Store’? What do you think? Aircel To Launch 3G Even As Reliance Industries Eyes 4G

by Paul Joseph January 10, 2011 Featured

At WATBlog, we have covered many stories on how the whole 3G episode is shaping up in India. Despite many speculations and announcements, only Tata DoCoMo and Reliance (and not to miss out the state owned BSNL and MTNL) have been able to start the 3G service . Other providers see it coming soon. 3G Today For instance Aircel has plans to roll out the much awaited service within 45-60 days in all of the 13 circles where it has spectrum, provided government has no objections on it. And guess what; the company is eyeing collaborating with other competitors to offer the service in other areas where it has got no license, even before it starts the same in its own licensed areas. It’s the more the merrier proposition for now. For those uninitiated, Aircel is a joint venture between Apollo Hospitals and Maxis Communications, a Malaysia based company. Operators are being denied licences for video calling services, as a part of 3G, by the Department of Telecom, Government of India considering the fact that law enforcement agencies could not intercept them in real time. They are expected to evolve a technology on their own to allow interception only then will they be issued the licences. The thirteen circles to be covered by Aircel include Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kolkata, Kerala, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh (East), West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Assam, North East and Jammu & Kashmir. According to the company, as none of the operators have got licences for pan-India operation, tie-ups would be the key driving force for almost all the companies. For instance, efforts are on to allow intra-circle calling. For your information, Aircel has a tie-up with Tata for 2G intra-circle roaming service. 4G- The Way Ahead While that is the status of 3G rollout in the country, Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) has gone one step ahead of others by announcing that the company is rolling out 4G service across the nation on 28th December this year on the occasion of the birthday ceremony of Shri (L) Dhirubhai Ambani, the company’s founder. According to a report by DNA, RIL, in association with a company called Rancore, is in the process of evaluating proposals from different network equipment makers and service providers to make the rollout successful on the scheduled date. By around the same time, the 3G service would be in full bloom in the country when the customers would have become quite used to the service and would not like to move out of their comfort zones. RIL, certainly has to take this into account and offer a competitive service. Rancore had already invited Request For Information(RFI) from prominent equipment manufacturers including Nokia Siemens Network, Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei and ZTE Telecom in December last year. RIL kickstarted its telecom operation on the same day in 2002 and revolutionized the way the whole India get connected with cheap mobile phones and plans. Following a split between the Ambani brothers in 2005, the telecom business of the company went into the kitty of Anil Ambani led ADAG group. The latter has since touched many grounds in the telecoms sector until last year when the former gained re-entry into the sector, based on a family agreement, by picking up 95% stake ( for about Rs 4,800 Crore)  in Infotel Broadband, which won pan-India licence and spectrum to offer Broadband Wide Access (BWA) . As of now, RIL is pinning all its hopes on Qualcomm’s LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology. Generally, LTE and Wi-Max are two main components of 4G Service. Globally, providers prefer LTE over Wi-Max as the former has the capability to carry more data in limited spectrum. All said and done, both LTE equipments and end-user devices are at their nascent stages. The availability of better equipments and devices may take time and that could be the main reason why RIL has slated the roll out for December this year, giving it ample time. The launch of BWA may also happen by around the same time. This is so because RFI is followed by Request For Proposal (RFP), which normally takes not less than 6 months. Once that happens, only then will the deal be closed. In any case, it is unlikely that 4G service would be available before the stipulated time. Instead, it may even get delayed. To Sum Up As of now, 3G is not yet offered by all the six providers that have won the auction. Though there have been many press releases on the roll out by these providers, only two of the private operators have actually started offering it. To say the least, there is much delay than expected. Even when 3G has not live up to its expectation till now is not it way too early for someone to expect 4G? No matter what happens, it is a good thing to expect a newer version or upgrade of any product or service or anything. But that should be good in terms of speed, pricing and utility. Only then will customers accept them. What do you think about it? REGISTER FOR WATSUMMIT – INDIA’S FLAGSHIP SUMMIT ON DIGITAL MEDIA REGISTER NOW! Tata DoCoMo Announces 3G Tariff

by Paul Joseph November 10, 2010 Featured

Just a week after it won the accolade of being the first private operator to introduce 3G in India, Tata DoCoMo has launched an aggressive tariff plan eyeing on converting its existing 2G customers into 3G substantially. According to the new plans, 3G customers would be paying anything between 0.66- 1.1 paisa per second for a normal voice call, which more or less equals the current tariff of 1 paisa per second for its 2G customers. Coming to the data plans, it ranges between 250 MB and 2GB of data usage for Rs 500 and Rs 2000 respectively per month. This time there won’t be any differentiation between its prepaid and postpaid customers in terms of the plans. However, there would be a special plan for the former, wherein they pay Rs 350 a month for 500 minutes of talk time (Both local and STD) and 150 MB of data usage. This seems a favorable option for many of them. Tata DoCoMo has also kept a special consideration for those 2G customers, who would not like to shift completely to 3G, but want to have a real feel of it. They can now do so by shelling out Rs 200 for 200 MB or Rs 500 for 650 MB of data usage per month. Tata DoCoMo is confident that these tariffs are competitive and that customers will accept them. In another note, Tata DoCoMo also foresees a substantial rise in the average revenue per user (ARPU) owing to some of the middle and high-end subscribers, who download data every day. Quite contrary to these, the PSU telecom major BSNL has no plan that has both voice and data services. For voice calls, its subscribers pay between 49 paisa to Re 1 per minute. It however, has a better data plan of Rs 549 for 1GB of data. This may look appealing but if you consider the cost of 2000 minutes of voice call that TaTa DoCoMo offers, the value comes to around Rs 1000 ( @50 paisa per minute). BSNL customers would pay extra for this talk time. BSNL also has better data plans such as Rs 999 for 10 GB of data and also Rs 1359 for unlimited data. However, voice charge comes extra always. MTNL on the other hand charges Rs 450 for 1 GB of data. It charges Rs 750 and Rs 2,500 for 2GB and 25GB of data respectively. Industry experts comment that ARPU rate in India averages around Rs 140 per month and above Tata DoCoMo is asking customers to pay twice or thrice that amount per month. Moreover, there is no incentive for higher usage.  As such the propagation may be slower than what it expects. There seems to be a competition going on in the 3G market already. But the market is not yet prominent. As and when it picks up heat and when other private players also join the bandwagon making it more competitive, Tata DoCoMo might consider reworking on its 3G tariff plans. Let’s see who wins the race. Looking For A Social Media Agency?? TRY US! Related Posts Tata DoCoMo Unveils 3G Services – Free For A Week! BSNL 3G Services In Gujarat Help One97 Test Video Portal

by Paul Joseph August 18, 2010 Featured

BSNL recently launched 3G services in Gujarat. Taking advantage of this, One97 Communications have launched a pilot for video portal VAS in the state. Though this service is not available commercially, it will allow BSNL 3G subscribers to watch and download videos from one97’s website. About One97 One97 is a telecom applications platform company. One97 either develops or purchases application platforms which can deliver products and services that can directly be integrated to the telecom service providers core network elements. Apart from network services, the company also has consumer and enterprise based services. One97 boasted of a turnover of INR 86 crores in Dec ‘09, and the company plans to raise around INR 120 crores through an IPO which would enable them to enhance their roducts and services. One97 had recently got Vringo to India. About the video portal 3G will abet mobiles phones in leading the digital revolution in the country. This video portal stands to be the new face to entertainment via mobile phones. This application will allow subscribers to access a lot of video content, information, and businesses. The best part of it of course being that you can access it from anywhere. Will it ever go commercial? Personally, I don’t see a hindrance in this video portal going commercial very soon. 3G will give customers great speeds to download videos or other content that they might be looking to access through their phones. The convenience of being able to access content from no matter where you are is something the consumer will never overlook. What do you think?
