Interviewstreet: A Review

by Paul Joseph October 7, 2010 Featured

As a student, I have seen lots of seniors landing themselves very lucrative job offers. Once, I had the opportunity of talking to the on campus placement head of Yahoo, who informed me that it is a very tedious and demanding job, albeit fruitful, of handpicking a few students from an entire batch. From a broader angle, big companies generally have to riff through hundreds of glorified resumes everyday, which is indeed daunting as you have no way to know right away whether a person who has stated that he can code in python, can actually do so. Well, this is where interviewstreet comes in and tries to solve this issue. About Interviewstreet : Interviewstreet is an online platform that helps companies and recruiters to create an online test which candidates have to take before proceeding to the interview round. This filtering process consists of programming, multiple choice and subjective questions. The codechecker evaluates the candidate’s code against various test cases and provides a performance analysis of the code against them. If you like programming, you would have visited sites like codechef and spoj and the codechecker of interviewstreet is somewhat similar. You are given the option to code in C, C++, C#, Java, Ruby or Python. Companies can put in as many questions as they deem fit and they have to buy invites for testing candidates. It starts off with Rs. 150 per invite for the first hundred invites. You can view the pricing details here . About the founders : Interviewstreet is the brainchild of two NIT Trichy graduates and it started off last year with mock interviews of candidates with industry professionals. But as it didn’t take off well, they focused on helping companies simplify the hiring process. They have a couple of interns working for them. Its facebook page has 436 likes and it has 199 followers on twitter . Funding Status : The company is self funded with a strong backing from Morpheus , who almost act as co-founders. Interface : Interviewstreet allows for a demo of their tests wherein you are presented with 2 coding questions, 3 multiple choice questions and one descriptive question. The sample questions are quite easy and the interface simple. Currently, the MCQs and the descriptive questions can be made by the client and they are working on allowing companies to make their own coding questions too. The candidates get the answers to the coding questions and MCQs right after the test while the descriptive answers have to be manually checked. Clients and competitors : Interviewstreet has around 10 companies using the product, notable are Flipkart and Bankbazaar. It faces global competition from Brainbench and Infocube while closer home, merittrac is a contender for the top spot. Final Thoughts : The concept of interviewstreet is pretty good, though some issues have to be resolved. An online test is a great tool for lateral hiring for big companies who receive a huge number of resumes from say Naukri. Though the aim is to save time and reduce effort through automation, the descriptive questions still need to be evaluated manually. The founders are looking at solving this through some APIs which use Natural Language Processing (NLP). I am still doubtful how well this can be used and till then manually correcting the descriptive questions will be quite a task. Being an online test, you have no escaping from Google, which candidates will definitely use to their optimum benefit. An application wherein the candidates won’t be able to switch to other windows will solve the problem here. Instead of paying Rs. 150 per invite, the companies may develop their own online testing mechanism and achieve the same results at a cheaper cost. So, I feel some additional features are required to be embedded into interviewstreet to make it an indispensable tool for recruiters. Connect Facebook To Your Inbox With Microsoft Outlook Connector

by Paul Joseph July 16, 2010 Featured

Does the social networking bug bite you while you are at work? Do you have that urge to peek into your Facebook account every now and then to see what your friends or colleagues are doing while you are working through e-mails? Microsoft has crafted the near perfect solution for you. You can now access your social networks in your e-mail inbox! Microsoft now lets you plug Facebook and Windows Live right into Outlook through the Outlook Social Connector. You can stay connected with your friends, family, and colleagues as you look through your email. This basically means that Connector will link Facebook profiles to the contacts in your mail. For example, when you’re reading a friend’s email in Outlook you will now also be able to see their status updates, photo uploads, posts, and other activities. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Email users will be able to view the Facebook activities of their friends in a box called the “People Pane.” Not only this, you will be able to grow your social and professional network directly within Outlook by simply adding “Friends” to Facebook and Windows Live directly from the Pane. Though LinkedIn and MySpace for the Outlook Social Connector became available in Outlook last winter itself, Facebook and Windows Live were added only recently considering the increasing popularity of both, especially Facebook. Through Microsoft’s introduction of the Outlook Social Connector middleware layer, these back-end services such as Sharepoint, Windows Live, Facebook and Myspace are able to push information directly to your inbox. Vital information such as status updates, profile updates and pictures will be pushed into Outlook right along with messages that might actually mean something to you. What Prompted The Move? According to the Nielsen ratings, 67 percent of the global online population now goes online to visit social networks and blogs to stay connected. The Outlook Social Connector doesn’t add another social network into the mix; rather it offers busy people the convenience of accessing them in Outlook; contrary to what Google Buzz plans to offer. This move comes very handy at a time when social data is deemed incredibly useful in the business world, especially if you need to understand what your client or colleague is thinking or doing right now. Does It Work For Everyone? A point to be noted is that Outlook will only pull data from e-mails connected to Facebook accounts. In other words, if you and most of your friends use Outlook primarily at work but have a personal email attached to your Facebook account, you may not see as much Facebook-related information with the Outlook Social Connector. Also while Connector makes Facebook contact information available in Outlook, but doesn’t allow the vice versa i.e. users can’t post the same information to the social network. About privacy, you don’t have to worry as the software is said to mirror Facebook’s privacy settings. Outlook 2003 and 2007 users can download the latest version of the Outlook Social Connector from the Microsoft Download Center while Outlook 2010 users can get the Outlook Social Connector update through Microsoft Update. ‘Small Pie.. Many Takers’ – The Problem Of Retention In Digital Media Space

by Paul Joseph May 25, 2010 Featured

Digital media is a small industry. After 3 years of continuous blogging on various aspects of online media, marketing, TRAI telecom and other issues we still do get only a few thousand visitors per day. This means that those with interest in this space are not more than a few thousands. This poses a unique problem. . Firstly it poses the problem of finding, acquiring and then retaining talent. Most of the folks who are veterans in the space are themselves not more than 10 years into this business (that too with the last 4-5 years counting as some real business). The issue of people retention The other issue is those with about 4-5 years of experience are either branching out on their own or are just too expensive to be hired as they are already paid and pampered well by the big players in the digital space. The final issue in this talent maze is that of retaining people and this is by far the most challenging one. Ive been running a social media agency for the last 3 years and this is how things have gone for me. 2 folks who joined me in the early days have their own agencies today, 1 of them is a social gaming head at a large dotcom company, 3 others are at middle management position in other agencies handling their social media clients. In short the small company I started 3 years back gave birth to a team that today powers half a dozen firm’s social media practice. Im sure those who started with digital agencies almost a decade ago in Mediaturf, Webchutney and Pinstorm have a similar story to tell as well. Now I believe this is natural progression as with a growing market and industry there is bound to be more and more people joining the entrepreneurial bandwagon as well. Its only good for the industry if you ask me. But the challenge to the situation arises when the Industry and its revenues don’t grow as fast as the number of people trying to make big businesses in the space. Its like trying to construct a 5000 square foot bungalow on a 4000 square foot plot. Highly ambitious to say the least. What it also does is that forces companies to poach from each other. I know poaching is a norm in most industries but one wonders how one can retain people when the same people are being offered obscene pay packages by funded players to join them. Not all can be lured via ESOPs. Ive felt that company culture might be the only glue you have to make your key people stick around for longer than the industry average. The issue of client retention Now when the Industry is so small and so is the market, with so many players only one thing is bound to happen. Client pitches wherein you try and poach someone else’s clients. Again I think this is really healthy. Its bound to increase innovation in the space. How wrong could I be.. Usually when posed with competition most young companies try to compete on price. This is because their value proposition has yet not been established and the only thing they think they can beat everyone else at is pricing. This is the single largest mistake that everyone in the digital space has made. We have either sold too cheap or committed too much for too little in the name of ROI. What this does is makes clients think that digital is a ‘cheap’ medium and one that only delivers clicks or leads or conversions. I dont blame them to think that way anymore. This is how we sold it and this is how they want it now. Also given the number of agencies out there and the number of companies trying out digital for the first time there is a shortterm aspect to engagements as well. This is when clients don’t commit for a longer duration and also negotiate on price. Most of us do business of this sort without calculating whether its a loss or a profit in the hope that someday the client will go for a yearly deal. That someday takes many days no matter how good you are at what you do. Race to be first. Ive seen a lot of passionate and aggressive people in this space who by all means live in the fast lane. I sometimes wonder if the small pie that so many run after is even worth the toil and sweat that one invests. One Venture Capitalist said to me recently (yes they do make sense sometimes).. He said “The effort is the same whether you run a small or a big business..”. Question is why are digital media guys working for peanuts when we are sure we aren’t the pre-historic monkey? Or its just that we ourselves believe that digital isn’t there yet? Nokia E72 Review Part 1 – Hardware

by Paul Joseph March 11, 2010 Featured

Roughly a Week ago I was offered to trial a Nokia E72 by my good Friends of WOM World Nokia. Already having experienced the Awesomeness that was the Nokia E71, i was very eager to get my Hands its Successor. Filled in the Trial Form, sent it back to WOM World and here we go, the Adventure that is the E72 begins: I received the Box on late Friday afternoon and went to work with it on Saturday Morning. After i first took the Device in my Hands i’ve decided to come up with a few Words to the Person who trialed the E72 before me: You’re in a very elite Group, Pal. You have the Privilege to get your Hands on one of Nokia’s latest Devices. The Handset came in a Condition that some of my 2 year old Phones not even look like. The Screen is scratched, some Corners look like they’re losing small Chips of Chrome the hard way. So in my Opinion the Device has been dropped and not at all been taken care of. If you don’t know how to treat a Test Device, you better leave them to People who do. Seriously, you don’t deserve it. Not cool. Anyways, back to the E72: Out of the Box, the E72 met my Expectations, in being a very premium Device. Lots of chromed Parts and stylish black mix up to a good Experience, feeling immediately well in the Hand. With a Size of 114 x 58.3 x 10.1 mm and approx. 128g of Weight, the Handset offers a great Size for this Formfactor. Let’s have a closer Look at the Front of the E72, shall we? Starting on Top we have the Loudspeaker for Calls, which offers a very good Call Quality. Right next to it is the VGA Front Camera for Video Calls and the Light Sensor. The Display is the well known 2,36″ QVGA Screen (320
