Facebook Responds To New Allegations Of Privacy Violation. Did They Do It?

by Paul Joseph September 27, 2011 Featured

Facebook has always taken flak for their implementation of privacy as a concept. Earlier, there were issues with the privacy settings of a person’s profile and the social network had received sharp criticism after which it got its act together . Allegations have surfaced again of wrongful privacy violations on Facebook’s part. Security consultant and hacker Nic Cubrilovic ran tests on the behavior of Facebook’s cookies. Cookies are small files that can acquire information about a user as they browse the Internet. Information from cookies can be transmitted to remote servers for research and analysis. He found out that Facebook only alters its tracking cookies rather than deleting them . These altered cookies contain account information and some unique identifiers. This means that the social network can track a person’s visits to any web-page that has a Facebook ‘Like’ button or a widget. If true, then this means that it is serious violation of a person’s privacy rights. Hence, when Nic Cubrilovic posted this on his blog , the news went viral and Facebook was forced to issue this statement: “Facebook does not track users across the web. Instead, we use cookies on social plugins to personalize content (e.g. Show you what your friends liked), to help maintain and improve what we do (e.g. Measure click-through rate), or for safety and security (e.g. Keeping underage kids from trying to signup with a different age).  No information we receive when you see a social plugins is used to target ads, we delete or anonymize this information within 90 days, and we never sell your information”. Specific to logged out cookies which are used for safety and protection, including identifying spammers, detecting when somebody unauthorized is trying to access your account, helping you get back into your account if you get hacked, disabling registration for a under-age users who try to re-register with a different birth-date, powering account security features such as 2nd factor login approvals and notification, and identifying shared computers to discourage the use of  ‘ keep me logged in’ .  After this announcement Facebook immediately fixed the privacy bug within 24 hours. Facebook will still have cookies but they won’t be collect identifiable account information anymore. Facebook announced a series of changes last week during the f8 developer conference. Their new  OpenGraph feature certainly looks interesting but it is vulnerable to privacy violation. Smart Lists, a new feature based on a single identifying detail (like location, school, employer) that are automatically collected by Facebook puts up a lot of information online for anyone to see. Same is the case with Timeline. It gives a detailed story of your past and current life to just about anyone. These are major concerns in the world today as spam and dubious activities like scams and phishing are threatening us at every point. Facebook should do something about this gaping privacy holes in its architecture or people will move to other social networks which have a firm hold on privacy as a concept. Trust us, the Timeline is one of the best features we have seen on any social network so far. Proper curation and management of the timeline can one day yield something akin to a visual autobiography of a person’s life but without proper privacy fixes and implementations it may end up being a liability.

Online Gaming Driven by Mobile, Missing out on Gambling

by Paul Joseph August 16, 2011 Featured

The Indian gaming industry is growing exponentially every year into one of the key growth segments in India. It has been resilient despite the current economic downturn, and is supported by increasing disposable income, increased awareness among youngsters and console gamer’s. We are also seen as a leading destination for high end, skill-based activities. International gaming companies are now outsourcing their projects to India due to the quality of game developers.   Mobile Gaming is the Next Big Thing The launch of mobile 3G services will drive the future growth in the Country’s gaming sector. With mobile penetration reaching almost 70 per cent, most of the mobile operators are capitalizing on the growing popularity of mobile gaming by offering games for download to their respective subscribers. Multi Player Games will allow people from different parts of country compete against each other. India lives in villages and our rural population is crazy about Movies, Cricket and Mobile Phones, a sure-shot winning formula. Himanshu Pant, Co-founder of Mactabilis Arts , says it all started with ‘Sholay’, with the game “crossing the 150,000 downloads mark on GSM operators and 800,000 on CDMA phones. From ‘Rang De Basanti’ to ‘Sarkar’ and even ‘Home Delivery’, 60-odd movies have been converted into mobile games. Bollywood constitutes nearly Rs 10 crore, and is expected to touch Rs 30 crore in next two years. Downloading costs anything from Rs 50 to Rs 150 per download. On average, a Bollywood game sells 7K to 10K copies with more popular movies even going up to 25K downloads.” Zapak.com’s Social Gaming Initiative Zapak.com has now introduced its first Facebook-based game called “Zapak Tambola“. The game allows users to invite their friends, chat with them, send virtual gifts and earn virtual money and experience points. As described previously , the player is gifted with virtual money which can be spent buying tickets for tambola or simply to buy gifts, dresses, etc. With Facebook credit , users can make use of their credit cards, net-banking account and Zong when they eventually run out of cash. Missing Out on Online Gambling The recently published Information Technology Rules 2011 has imposed a blanket ban on anything “relating to” or “encouraging” gambling. Gambling is generally considered “immoral” and hence, setting up legal gambling outlets is impossible in the current climate. Poker has been around for ages but it never captured the limelight of the public eyes. It was basically an underground scene, while most of our card games fans have kept a low profile in order to avoid any public scrutiny. Considering how much society has evolved since the original act was passed, we are being a bit archaic about the whole “morality” issue. Only time will tell whether this too shall pass, and the Government sees the scope of raising taxes on customer winnings. In India, the gaming industry is likely to witness a CAGR of 53 per cent and valuation going up to $1.3 billion by 2013 from $239 million at present. With 70 per cent of the Country’s population below the age of 35 years, the trend and acceptance of Gaming together is rapidly growing among youth as it provides them with an opportunity to expand their friend circle by getting engaged in casual interactions and social games. Looking at the quality of developers we have in our own backyard, the only way is up!   Do you plug and play on the go? Are you in favour of Online Gambling? Tell us now!

Native Facebook App for Every Phone; Free Data Usage For 90 Days

by Paul Joseph July 15, 2011 Featured

Feature phone users can finally enjoy a native Facebook experience on their phones using Facebook’s  newly launched Java based app . Till now a native Facebook app was a privilege only smartphone users enjoyed, but with this app, users of more than 2,500 java based phones would be able to update their status without visiting Facebook’s mobile site . Facebook has done a commendable job of including features like News Feed , Inbox and uploading photos in the app. The app, as shows in the screenshot , resembles the native apps for Android and iOS. This is great because it bridges the divide between smartphone and feature phones, at least with respect to Facebook. To encourage the use of the app, Facebook has partnered with service providers in countries where feature phones are still used, to offer users free data access for 90 days . Even after the 90 day period, the app is designed to used minimum amount of data so as to make the Facebook experience affordable. In India, Facebook has partnered with Aircel , Airtel , Idea and Reliance . Facebook’s disappointing growth in the United States has compelled them to look at other countries to grow which is why it has tied up with service providers in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Turkey, Indonesia and Brazil. Facebook clearly sees potential for growth in these countries, in terms of users as well as activity. The app comes after Facebook’s acquisition of Snaptu , a company which specialized in developing applications for feature phones. This was definitely a talent acquisition since even now Snaptu’s applications for different social networks are available on their site. Install the app by visiting  d.facebook.com/install  on your mobile phone browser or download it from GetJar ,  Appia , and Mobile Weaver. What’s your take on the app? Will you use 0.facebook.com or the app after the 90 day period?
