Flipkart To Buy LetsBuy.com: A Marriage Of Convenience?

by Paul Joseph February 9, 2012 Featured

The Indian Digital Review reports that Flipkart is going to buy LetsBuy.com . The actual announcement will be made in a few days. This is exciting news for the e-commerce space in India.   LetsBuy.com launched in July 2009 and had a venture capital inflow from firms like Helion Venture Partners, Accel Partners and Tiger Global. Flipkart has been on an acquiring spree for quite a while now. Just recently, they acquired Mime360 and the Bollywood content assets from Chakpak.com. We are hearing that some sort of music service is also in the works. Flipkart are expecting a massive sales surge this year and Founder and CEO, Sachin Bansal is confident about increasing their revenue ten-fold . This deal is seemingly a marriage of convenience for both parties as LetsBuy.com is currently looking at raising more money and Flipkart has cash reserves of $150 million . LetsBuy.com is considered to be the second biggest player in the e-commerce industry whereas Flipkart takes the first spot. Interestingly, Flipkart is valued at $850 million and LetsBuy.com is valued at $20-25 million . The entry of Amazon in India via Junglee.com might have just spurred this development. Although Sachin Bansal said that Flipkart was not really threatened by Amazon, this may represent them fortifying their defenses against the advances of the online retail giant. The e-commerce space is growing rapidly in India but there is a nagging problem of customer loyalty which all e-commerce firms will have to work on. What are your thoughts on this acquisition? Google Buckles Under Pressure Removes Offensive Content. Facebook Refuse 2 Budge

by Paul Joseph February 7, 2012 Featured

In the ongoing  issue  about an Indian Trial court trying to book Google, Facebook, Microsoft and 18 other social networking firms over the alleged ‘Objectionable Content’ being hosted on their sites, Google India seems to have given in to the trial courts demands. They told the court yesterday that they have managed to remove certain offending web-pages from their search results. Facebook and Google were among the ones that  filed  a compliance report earlier in accordance with the court’s directive to remove texts, photos and videos which depicted Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh in a negative light. This complaint filed by an activist has been blown up and religion is also being used as an excuse for such an action. Companies like Yahoo! and Microsoft have filed for deletion of their names from the list of defendants due to the fact that there was no allegation against them for web-casting any hurtful material. While Google India has given in to this absurd request which is highly questionable in terms of objectivity and freedom of speech, Facebook India has told the court after filing its compliance report that it does not control nor operate the servers that host  www.facebook.com  which are based in the USA. According to Facebook, it is neither a necessary nor a proper party to be added into the defendant list. They have also asked the court to change the name in the suit from ‘Facebook’ to ‘Facebook India Online Services Pvt. Ltd’, which is the proper name of the social networking company in India. We would like you to ponder on these developments. We are becoming more and more like China in terms of ‘banning’ or ‘censoring’ content. So what if Sonia Gandhi was made fun of? Isn’t it covered in our right to free speech? Does the web have a different set of rights? Hypocrisy has always been a part of our Government since some time now. This is a perfect example of a political party flexing its muscles to make needless and unnecessary changes to how the free web works. What are your thoughts on this issue? Share them with us. Orkut Still A Contender Reveals Facebook’s IPO Filing!

by Paul Joseph February 3, 2012 Featured

Facebook feels that Orkut is still a worthy adversary for it in India. One of the largest, Facebook’s IPO filling keeps revealing many interesting tidbits. We recently wrote about how Facebook actually accepted it had rivals. But considering Orkut to be one of them is, well, amusing in the least. Sure it was a huge rage when Google introduced it. We remember filling in so many fun trivia & quizzes. However, since Facebook reared in India, people have literally forgotten Orkut. While Facebook may consider it a rival lets evaluate; Why? Facebook has named others along with Orkut, such as Cyworld in Korea, Mixi in Japan, vKontakte in Russia & of course Orkut in India as well as Brazil. These are being referred to as Social Networks with Deep Regional Roots . Nonetheless, together they have sizable population of active & passive users attached to them. This has directly affected Facebook’s march in these regions. In their absence Facebook would have garnered considerably more users per month. Facebook grew 132% over last year in terms of Monthly Active Users (MAU) in India, while in Brazil it was a whopping 268% . Despite this the Filling relegates us to “ relatively less-penetrated, large markets such as Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, and South Korea ” In case of Japan & Korea, the filing reveals penetration of only 15% & censorship-riddled China has near 0% ! Orkut, once a vibrant network has been relegated to the Back-burner, both by users & by Google. Though it’s own have abandoned it, Facebook is still watching it cautiously. Do you still use or prefer Orkut? iPad Buzziest Tablet Brand Online, Says Survey

by Paul Joseph February 1, 2012 Featured

Apple iPad dominated the buzz about tablets on social media in India, according to a survey conducted by NMIncite, a Nielsen McKinsey company. iPad managed to garner more share in online conversations ahead of Android tablets, reports Times Of India. iPad had 55% buzz online, while Android tablets managed to capture 40% share. The survey tracked all online mediums from India for second half of the year 2011. Samsung Galaxy Tab was the highest buzz-getter in Android tablets, while Motorola Xoom, Reliance Tab and ultra-cost Aakash also featured on the list. “Even though Apple has not made a big push to promote and sell the iPad in India, it has already generated tremendous buzz online,” said Farshad Family, managing director, Nielsen Media- India. The survey also studied the category of smartphones. Android was the clear leader in this category. Android-based smartphones managed to garner 41% buzz, compared to iPhone’s 27% and BlackBerry’s 14%. But, this was actually lower than its 45% share for the first half of 2011. According to analytics’ firm Canalys, Apple overtook Hewlett Packard as the largest vendor of personal computers in the world in the fourth quarter of 2011. This was riding on the back of the upbeat performance shown by iPad. Apple sold 15.43 million tablets in this quarter which was almost double of corresponding quarter from last year.   Looking For A Social Media Agency?? – Contact WATConsult – India’s Leading Social Media Agency Related Posts Google Demonstrates Motorola Tablet Prototype Samsung GalaxyTab comes to India Samsung Unveils iPad Competitor Galaxy – Should Apple Worry? iPad Sales Plunge As Kindle Fire Tops Holiday Wish-List: Time For iPad 3? Special Feature: Facebook, Twitter & Firefox Requests Google Not To Be Evil

by Paul Joseph January 25, 2012 Featured

Google is the top Internet Company in the world today. Its search capabilities are massive and its services are deeply entrenched in the daily deeds and tasks of the modern Internet user. A single change in the algorithm of search engine can send many businesses packing! It has a lot of power but people love Google because it doesn’t act evil. Well, companies like Facebook and Twitter don’t think so. They are calling Google’s new addition to search, ‘Search, plus your world’ a big mistake and an unfair trade practice. First, let’s get down to what Google’s ‘ Search, Plus your world ’ (SPYW) is. As we mentioned before, it is a social plug-in into the search algorithm which throws up results personalized to you. They have added Google+ support to it and you might see ‘relevant’ results from the fledgling new social network. Here’s how Google looks at this addition. Not looking evil, eh? Facebook and gang are claiming that this Google+ addition is indeed really dangerous for the open web. Since everyone searches on Google, you will get only Google+ profile and news results thus effectively blocking out rival social networking information. Twitter has already opposed this earlier. They have now founded a website where they are going to educate people on why this new search is wrong. The website is named, ‘ Focus on the user ’ and has information about how SPYW throws up irrelevant results. Here is a snapshot showing the difference between normal search and the new Social search. They also have a video walk-through which gives more information about their findings and intent. This is very interesting stuff when you look at how much grey area there is in this whole issue. Google’s search engine is a proprietary technology from Google. It was built as a service to discover the web which then gave rise to SEO as a field. Google has diversified since then and has gotten onto many things like mobile, videos, email etc. all the while getting its revenue from advertising on its search engine. Now doesn’t Google get an opportunity to leverage its infrastructure to promote their own products? Of course, it doesn’t sound right but then again it is not illegal either. Google might face some anti-trust issues with their new feature but we don’t think it is all that bad. Facebook and Twitter do not really have search capacities like Google but then they don’t need to. Their users can search within the service itself. What we do not understand is why would Facebook, Twitter and Firefox look at Google search like a social service and take it for granted. It is a Google product. Google sought out to renew the Twitter real-time search plug-in contract and Twitter cancelled it. Now it is kinda stupid of them to accuse Google of unfairness. The question can be asked in reverse. Does Facebook show Google or Google+ ads/results for free? We don’t think so. Well, Google does show Facebook results but it cannot get deep because their API’s are not open. Same thing with Twitter. We agree to that fact that information on the web should be free but Google+ linking with Google search is a smart move which will help the user search for content and people with ease. The real thing that people and these companies are ignoring is that the ‘SPYW’ filter can switched off with a single button. If you don’t want it, you can simply shut it off and search the normal way. Do you think Google’s SPYW is evil? Do let us know.
