Angry Birds Developers Sued In USA ; Birds To Get Angrier?

by Paul Joseph July 27, 2011 Featured

What do you do when you want to make some money, inconvenience for some people and live in a country with easy-to-sue laws? That’s right: you sue.  USA’s patent system lets people patent software implementation ideas. This practice is not done in the EU and other places. Taking advantage of this, a one-man company known as Lodsys from Marshall, Texas has sued a large number of mobile game developers for their in-app level purchase methods. Some of the companies named in the lawsuit were:  Electronic Arts , Atari , Square Enix and Take-Two Interactive . They had filed the lawsuit in May 2010. They recently removed Wulven Games from the list and added Rovio , the creator of mobile gaming biggie Angry Birds . “Patent trolls” is a term used to describe frivolous lawsuits that assert intellectual property rights over successful enterprises in order to receive payments from them. The recent rise in ‘Patent Trolls’ is what is causing a lot of companies to withdraw their games and apps from the US market. A number of UK developers have already done so. Small independent developers are discouraged by practices like this, as they can’t pay the expensive legal fees required to defend themselves, resulting in US customers not having access to a number of games. The company Lodsys is already suing a number of industry giants. Hewlett Packard , Adidas , Best Buy and even The New York Times are being sued by it. We cannot help but wonder the validity of their claims. One good news for small developers is that Apple has stepped in on their behalf. In June, they file a motion to intervene in the case. Says Apple in their motion , “ While the developers will likely be interested in resolving this case as quickly and inexpensively as possible, Apple’s interest is in protecting its broader license rights with respect to thousands of App developers for Apple products who may be the subject of future Lodsys lawsuits or threats ” What do you think? Is it alright for software implementation patents to hinder the growth of the booming mobile game industry? Do let us know

Are Digital Villages The Way Forward For India?

by Paul Joseph May 31, 2011 Featured

Osama Manzar of the Digital Empowerment Foundation has penned a great article over a LiveMint titled ‘Creating an alliance to bridge the digital divide’. With a quarter of a million panchayats in India, the villages are where the population of the country is, making them a gateway to that population. If we are to have e-governance, it is essential that these village councils are digitized and more importantly, training is imparted to them. It goes on to quote statistics. According to the panchayati raj ministry, the country has 245,525  panchayat offices, including 582  zila panchayats , 6,299 block  panchayats and 238,644  gram panchayats . Of these, only 58,291 panchayats have computers. He states that from his  interactions with  panchayats across India, most are either not working or there is nobody with the skills to use them. I have interacted with more than 1,000  panchayat officers. They seem to be functionally illiterate, have no sense of responsibility or accountability and have little exposure to digital tools except mobile phones. A majority have no idea about most government schemes. Nonetheless, the  panchayats remain the most potent level of governance to work with for development, as they deal with all 29 development-related subjects.  What is missing is a pool of honest leaders to champion development at the  panchayat level and a result-oriented implementation methodology We couldn’t agree more with him, as groundbreaking developments in the metro’s alone is not enough. All this ends up doing is cause a wider gap between rural and urban India. For our country to truly move forward, we need to move forward together . The article makes a great read. What do you think? Would you rather see the metro’s developed further or would you want more focus on the under-developed? Do let us know. ZipDial Receives Funding

by Paul Joseph April 13, 2011 Featured

ZIpDial, the mobile solutions company, has received funding of Rs. 3.5 crore from a consortium led by Mumbai Angels with participation from US-based angel investors. ZipDial will use the investment to expand engineering and business development teams. ZipDial is a Bangalore based start-up, founded by Valerie Rozycki, Amiya Pathak and Sanjay Swamy. It has developed a mobile-engagement platform, which is based on concept of a missed call. During the World Cup, the company tied up with LG Mobile to provide cricket scores. ZipDial is also providing cricket scores for the IPL matches. User has to just call on the number 02233010046. The call gets automatically disconnected after couple of seconds and the user receives a SMS updating him about the score. User can receive maximum 5 SMSes in a day. It also provides a service called ZipDial to Verify to e-commerce companies. It is currently deployed on portals like FlipKart, Myntra, and education portal TutorVista. According to new TRAI guidelines, e-coomerce portals are no longer allowed to verify customers’ mobile numbers through SMSes. ZipDial to Verify is a plugin on a web page for login, transaction checkout, account registration or any other feature for which the identity of the user needs to be verified. A randomly generated ZipDial Number is displayed for the end user to dial and when the user dials the number, the call gets disconnected and the ZipDial system identifies the mobile number as verified. Google Merges Hotpot With Places

by Paul Joseph April 11, 2011 Featured

On November 2010, Google rolled out a local recommendation engine called Hotpot. The idea behind the introducing Hotpot was to make local search results for places more personal and significant on Google. Hotpot consisted of three main features — Google Places, The places you like and The places your friends like. Now, Google has made an announcement that they are making Hotpot a part of Google Places. The blogpost reads, “It’s been incredibly exciting to watch Hotpot grow—the community has quickly expanded to millions of users who are rating more than one million times per month and enjoying a truly personalized view of the world.” Considering this growth of Hotpot, Google decided to incorporate Hotpot within Google Places. Google’s justification for doing so is simplifying the connection between places, already rated and reviewed and places having online presence though Google Places. In other words, Google wants that both should be under the same umbrella, i.e. Google Places. This logic seems justifiable. Folding Hotpot into Google Places carries sense as Google Places has a huge list of places. There are 50 million places across the world, which are listed in Google Places. Hotpot may have a personalized touch as people recommend places through it, but finally those places also get listed. Subsequently then, Hotpot should be a part of Google Places. The blogpost states that though the name Hotpot will be removed, the ‘Hotpotness’ will not. Perhaps they intended to mean that rating and reviewing of new places will continue. In fact, the blog reads’ “We have big plans to continue adding more features to Google Places that make it even easier to rate, discover and share the places you love whenever you’re using Google.” Have you used Hotpot before? Will you be using it more now that it is a part of Places? Showcase Your Digital Work Here! Win An Award! Log onto WATAwards Related Posts Facebook’s Revenue To Touch $2 Bn In 2010? Yahoo! Zynga Sets Up Creative Studio In India

by Paul Joseph March 14, 2011 Featured

Zynga, the social gaming behemoth, is starting a creative studio in India to conceptualise and develop games for global markets, and plans to double its staff here as well. Zynga Studio-I will be the company’s largest office outside the United States and will be based in the company’s office in Bangalore. Back in February 2010, Zynga opened its office in Bangalore. At that time, social gaming on Facebook was undergoing quick growth in the country and the company estimated 81 million internet users in India and anticipated it to become the third largest market, behind the US and China, by 2013. Zynga’s Indian office has around 100 employees who are focused on developing infrastructure and key technologies for an open-source database application — Membase — which supports the company’s growing user base. Zynga plans to hire 100 new employees for Studio-I and about half them would be game developers who will be responsible for developing new features for about eight current games from Zynga including Vampire Wars, YoVille and FishVille, according to Shan Kadavil, Zynga’s manager for India. The company is also adding people from other profiles — creative talent and senior management — besides engineering. This is important as the new studio will be taking full ownership from a profit and loss standpoint for the eight games, from conceptualisation to gameplay mechanics, implementation, development and online marketing. In the future, Studio I might develop entirely new games as well, added Kadavil. Dhimant Vyas, who designed the title sequence for the Bollywood film, Taare Zameen Par has been hired as creative director. Zynga’s plan to set up the creative studio in India will also be highly conducive for the country’s economy, to be more specific the IT industry. Currently Zynga has nearly 1500 employees worldwide. Although, the Indian office will have only 200 employees, we can expect the number to grow further looking at the rate which the company is growing. The company is planning to launch games which people can play on mobile devices and has already been rolling out mobile versions of its popular titles. So, the Indian IT hub is now going to get the taste of game development as well. Zynga, is the first amongst the popular web-startups to actually start a development centre in India. Previously, in August 2010, Facebook opened its offices in Hyderabad, which is only responsible for providing advertising and sales support to software pros sitting at its headquarters in Palo Alto. Like Facebook, the web giant, Google also has an office in Hyderabad which provides support for Adwords writing and quality rating services for clients and has recently started providing support for Adsense clients as well. So, both Google and Facebook’s offices in Hyderabad are only there for accelerating their sales in India and not for any core development. This makes Zynga’s move to Indian an even bigger news — The social gaming startup does not want to exploit India by starting a BPO but wants to add value by setting up a creative studio. Couple of weeks back Zynga made another move in the Indian market. Along with organising meet-ups for its fans, the company also launched Zynga Game Cards in association with MOL AccessPortal Berhad. These card will provide an easy way for players to pay for virtual goods. Although this move might not work in their favour, it shows that they are looking at India as a growing market and want to experiment with it. Of the 25 million users which Zynga has worldwide, 0.6 percent of them are Indian. Though this isn’t an impressive figure, Zynga’s market in India is rapidly expanding. Just a year back, there were hardly users, who heard about this gaming leviathan and now one and a half million Indians play those games daily. Looking For A Social Media Agency? CLICK HERE!
