Maliciuous Content Creates Havoc On Facebook; 2Lakh Accounts Hacked In India

We cannot deny it; Facebook has become a part of our lives. In many cases our entire life is on Facebook . This guarantees that hackers will be attracted to phish for data or spread malicious content on this platform. We have earlier seen how Facebook has been utilized by scamsters to earn a few extra bucks. The latest news reveals that over 2 lakh Facebook user accounts have been hacked in India. Pornographic content has been spread as feeds to the hacked user’s friends. This is not the first time that such an attempt has been made. These attacks have, surprisingly, been concentrated around Bangalore, Karnataka. Mid Day was the first newspaper to report on this incident. The state’s cybercrime department has also confirmed that they have received complaints on similar lines and are looking into the matter. Many of the users who suffered this hack attack have been left red-faced and embarrassed in front of friends and family, due to the graphic nature of the content spread. A number of posts on Facebook state that they are planning to quit Facebook completely after this incident or commit ‘ social suicide ’. It potentially could turn into a really big problem for Facebook, unless they sort out the issue fast and ensure that such incidents do not recur. The fact that Facebook accounts have been hacked is disturbing, but definitely not surprising. With over 800 million registered users, Facebook is the most visited website on earth and it is bound to attract the attention of hackers.This current incident of hacking and spreading pornographic content on Facebook is the first in India, which has the third highest number of Facebook users in the world. User photographs have been morphed and posted as news feed on friend’s timeline. Such photos have also been posted on pornographic websites. Facebook, it seems, have taken this incident seriously and have set up a few guidelines for users to follow on their official Facebook security blog post. The post urges users to take the security features on Facebook seriously and spend a few minutes to customize their security settings. Facebook has said their best engineers are looking into the matter. Most of the accounts were hacked after users clicked on certain spam links. Facebook has issued a statement that they have been able to limit the damage and have fixed the browser vulnerability due to which these spam attacks were made possible. News has also come out of Indian government servers at NIC (National Informatics Centre) being hacked into and utilized to launch attacks on other countries. What do you think  of this incident?
