TimesJobs Optimizes Website: Job-search Got Even Simpler?

by Paul Joseph January 12, 2012 Featured

TimesJobs  a Times Group initiative has just re-launched their portal in a revamped design. We visited the site for a quick review & were pleasantly surprised with the efforts. The new design has surely been built with one thing in mind. Simplicity. As compared to the earlier version, the new avatar of the site offers navigation through tabbed browsing which is a very common feature in the  popular browsers . Amit Jain, VP, TimesJobs is optimistic as he says, “ A host of features give job-seekers a clutter free home page experience with intuitive navigation and faster downloads. We hope these improvements encourage job-seekers to fine tune their resumes,   enhance their job-search   and apply to corporate that are in   high demand ” A new “floating” tab akin to a scrolling advertisement is anything but. According to the site designers, the tab should offer critical navigation options that offer ease of job search to both logged-in and unregistered users. While logged-in we saw the hovering tab links to personalized page of the Timesjobs. The site now also has a omnipresent Login form at the top-right corner. Oddly enough, once you login through this, we simply could not logout, no matter how many times we clicked “Logout”! Guess, TimesJobs wants us logged-in always! They are giving what the subscribers demands reveals Amit, “ Our research showed that the above data fields are critical to a   job seekers   success in finding a matching job, and having them put succinctly in a single box makes it very easy to access ”. The site also seems to be optimized for speeds as we did witness better load times. With the   advent   of Social Networking in the recruiting game, will you regularly log-on to a   job-specific   site like TimesJobs   to search for your dream job? Monster.com Targets Students With Monster College. A Boon For Companies?

by Paul Joseph November 4, 2011 Featured

After invading the Social Networking circuit, Monster has launched another initiative into India’s Campus Placement Market. Called as Monster College, this is an integrated placement platform, which is aimed at seamlessly connecting colleges, students and companies. Under this noble initiative, Monster will work with educational institutes across the country to help companies make campus recruitment’s possible right from the comfort of their offices. Sanjay Modi, Managing Director, had this to say ,”With Monster College, our goal is to convert the art of campus hiring into a science. There is a war of talent and this concept will help companies in saving costs and time. It also eliminates the concept of day zero or day one on college campuses .” The response is great; over 2,400 colleges and 180,000 students across India have registered. Mr. Modi further revealed,” The concept of this integration arose out of  Mumbai-based IT company Syntel’s recruiting drive in 2010. Syntel was attempting to reach the most qualified graduates at all AICTE-approved institutions across India, irrespective of geography or reputation. The product born out of necessity was, Syntellect, a pan-India hiring initiative to create a positive national impact by extending job opportunities to graduates at every accredited college and university across the country. Syntel partnered with Monster India to develop the database of colleges, and the back-end infrastructure needed to support the 2010 Syntellect program. This partnership led to the creation of Monster College.” With over 3,000 Engineering colleges & 40% campus recruitment , Monster.com’s 20,000 strong employer’s database will surely have a vast talent-pool, literally at  their finger-tips! However, Monster.com also have a secondary agenda, it wishes to provide this database to its channel partners including training and placement officers (TPOs). Is Naukri.com listening ? Half A Decade Of WAT.. Half Way There Yet?

by Paul Joseph June 27, 2011 Featured

Today is WATBlog’s 5th Birthday.. Half a decade of blogging is something.. I was just going through our statistics today morning and realized that we have over 6000 posts and over 13000 comments posted. On the contribution front we have over 90 bloggers who have contributed articles to WATBlog over the last 5 years. We also have over 100 video interviews taken at WATShow which is our video interview portal. All in all over 2 lakh people visit WATBlog each month now and our Social presence has also grown to mirror our reach as facebook and twitter has over 3000 fans and followers each. We are no more ‘just a blog’ as we launched our own event formats in WATSummit and our own award function in WATAwards. We have always had the ambition of connecting Web, Advertising and Technology space in India and its been quite a journey in chasing that ambition. Today WATMedia Pvt Ltd which is the holding company of all WAT properties and brands employees over 60 fulltime staff , has offices in Mumbai and Delhi (Gurgaon) and also has a network of 50+ active bloggers supporting the regular blogging and reporting activity on WATBlog. Here is a timeline of the growth of what was started as a humble blog by a 21 year old to what I would today term as a thought leader in the digital media space.. 27th June 2006: First post goes up on WATBlog August 2006: 1st contributor joins WATBlog December 2006: WATBlog started getting recognized as an influencer with PR agencies calling us for press meets Year 2007: Growth year… We hit 1000 unique visitor a day by end of 2007. WATShow our video interview site is launched and so is WATJob our jobs portal. We also initiate a sister concern social media agency WATConsult Year 2008: Recession hits us and we respond by initiating events WATBlog Panels (Evening Panels) and WATBlog Wednesday (Evening networking sessions) Year 2009: We do 6-7 such events across Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and more.. Second half of the year saw WATConsult rise with the social media Industry catching up.. Year 2010: Golder year with 2 offices in Mumbai.. Social Media at all time high.. WATBlog wins Best Blog of 2009 at E4M Digital awards by beating BIG B blog at Bigadda Year 2011 (so far) : 2 BIG events.. WATSummit trends on twitter WATAwards gets underway.. WATConsult spreads its wings and crosses the 50 people mark.. We expand our office footprint to Gurgaon Delhi.. WATConsult wins best viral marketing award at IDMA 2011. As you can see from above its been quite a journey.. Over 100 people have worked with us and we have created several entrepreneurs too with some of our people running their own companies today.. Innumberable memories are etched in these 5 years.. We may not be the biggest or smartest company out there yet but we certainly were the most hardworking and yet the most fun to be a part of. What we are most proud about is that all of the above was achieved without a single penny from any investor or even any formal advisory board of any sort. We have hardly even used our family money. All people who ever worked for WAT have been below the age of 30 and even today the average age of this organization is 23 years. Its easy to leverage experience and build a business its tough to create things from scratch without having any clue how to go about it. We have messed up many times, looked like fools as well but we never gave up.. We fell and we rose and we fought and Im glad to say we survived. After going through so many emotions and ups and downs over the last 5 years or half a decade I wonder if we are half way there.. Are we close to what we set out to be?? The answer is no.. As an entrepreneur you are never satisfied. The ambition to be better, faster, leaner (costs) and bigger (growth) is an unending and non fulfilling journey. We still feel humbled by seeing our competition and many younger people and their work. We feel compelled to up our game. We feel like shaking our heads after every failed attempt and getting back to trying harder one more time. WAT isn’t about a company.. Its always been about an Industry.. The digital industry that has been voicing for its rightful place in India. Its been about a revolution that over the last 5 years took its own time to evolve.. But things are rapid and changing fast.. I see Ipads, Playbooks and iPhones powering a tomorrow for which we have worked really hard the last 5 years. WAT is the voice and the emotion that is associated with doing great innovative never been done before work in digital in India. Its about a community of so called geeks, online guys, digital folks or techies as some call them who have always been told that their medium is small.. or numbers are low or there is still time.. WAT is about the Dawn of the Digital Age that we will see in the next decade.. We shall be announcing our next WATSummit very soon and we would be talking about this “Dawn of the Digital Age” and how it will revolutionize the way people talk, work, love, share and grow.. Stay Tuned! Thanks to all our readers for fueling our ambitions.. We will make sure as we head to the second half of our journey that in the next 5 years WAT will evolve into the thought leader that it was always aimed at being. Nokia To Cut 7000 Jobs By 2012; Outsource Symbian Development To Accenture

by Paul Joseph April 28, 2011 Featured

10 weeks after announcing their partnership, Nokia and Microsoft finally signed the deal just days back. And now, comes the news that Nokia plans to slash 7000 employees by the end of 2012 as a cost-cutting method, which is essential to prepare the company for its upcoming partnership. During this reorganisation, the company would ramp up its portfolio and services provided by devoting to increase its development capacity of devices running on WP7. Out of these 7000 employees, 4000 would be part of the worldwide job cuts and would include 300 jobs in India . The other 3000 would be shifted to Accenture, the company to which Nokia is outsourcing the future development of Symbian. Nokia informed that the reorganisation would help the company reduce operations cost by nearly $1.5 billion and, Denmark, Finland and the UK would see the majority of job reductions. Nokia president and CEO Stephen Elop informed through a press release: At Nokia, we have new clarity around our path forward, which is focused on our leadership across smart devices, mobile phones and future disruptions. However, with this new focus, we also will face reductions in our workforce. This is a difficult reality, and we are working closely with our employees and partners to identify long-term re-employment programs for the talented people of Nokia. We are offering those who are losing their jobs a range of options, from individual re-employment support and re-training to making investments to promote innovation and working with a variety of partners to create new opportunities. More than the job cuts, what really grabbed our attention was a statement of the press release which informed, “Nokia…plans to form a strategic collaboration with Accenture that would result in the transfer of Nokia’s Symbian software activites…to Accenture.” So, Nokia is not even going to continue the development of Symbian. This is not surprising as the company has not been able to add much value to Symbian that would give it the ability to compete in this market. The present smartphone industry is more about software and apps rather than the hardware, and this is where Nokia has lost out. Nokia has accepted that its speciality lies not in producing a complete smartphone but only the hardware devices. We have reported earlier that Nokia will be using Symbian only for the development of mid-tier devices running on Series 40, while the smartphones will be running on Windows Mobile OS developed by Microsoft. With Nokia outsourcing the development of Symbian to Accenture, the company itself is only left with the task of manufacturing the devices. Now the big question is, can Accenture do what is required to help Symbian compete with Google’s Android, which is currently the ideal platform for mid-tier devices. Android is an OS for smartphones but, as it is open sourced, various companies have manufactured devices running on Android which are of a much lower price range than what a smartphone costs. But, Android is equally present for the high-end market that Nokia is targeting for its devices running on WP7, which also has Apple’s iOS as a formidable competitor. Nokia failed to capitalise the smartphone market and that has cost the company a lot of market share and prestige in the industry. Although analysts doubt if the Nokia-Microsoft partnership can turn the fate for both the companies, there is some chance for them to bounce back. Now, we also need to keep an eye out to see what Accenture does to revive Symbian. What’s your take on the job cuts that Nokia has announced? Do you think Accenture would be able to revive Symbian?
