Chrome Defeats Firefox In The War Of Browsers

by Paul Joseph January 3, 2012 Featured

Despite the reports that Google would have to pay Firefox one billion dollar so that it remains the default search engine, is now on a sway. Yes, grapevine has it that Google’s very own product Chrome has skyrocketed to a 27 percent market share whereas Firefox is on a decline. So no matter how much money Google has to pay Firefox , Google still consumes most of the market share. But amidst this war, we have almost forgotten Safari it seems. The most viable answer to this is Safari is baked into OS X with Mac. The other reason why Chrome rules is that it seemingly fast in terms of rendering as well as high end JavaScript actions. Features such as Chrome Extensions, more tabs options, URL/Search Omnibox and many more has made it outstanding. NetMarketShare statistics also reports that Chrome winded up 2011 with 19 percent share and this graph is ever increasing. While Firefox was standing at 22 percent market share but that is going down. Google however is having quite a tough time with its Android browser when it comes to iOS devices. Google Android seems to be bogged down by Safari but on the other hand Safari fails on the desktop. Google Chrome in this scene has to go a long way. Though its market share is on a high, yet there are some players such as IE who have a static 39 to 52 percent share as visible from Statcounter and NetMarketShare. But these numbers will vanish into thin air if Chrome still continues with its work and moves faster in this marathon. There seems to be no stopping. The ongoing tablets war is inviting many more players with each passing day. Today India has invariably become a top destination of many leading tablet makers. And the latest entrant here is none other than Lenovo , a well know laptop manufacturer which has already launched its Windows 7 based tablet named as IdeaPad P1 in US.  The Chinese company has announced that it would be launching a series of tablets in India by September this year. The report states that Lenovo would launch tablets ranging from low-end models to high end ones. There was however no mention as to whether the one launched in US will be available here or not. The whole episode will be kicked off with the company launching a 10 inch tablet, IdeaPad K1 , which will be based on Google’s Android Honeycomb 3.0 operating system. There is an anticipation that the tablet might be based on the upcoming Android version 3.1 update. The IdeaPad range of tablets will be manufactured in lines with the US version of the Lenovo tablet called Lepad . Some of its tech specs include 1280 x 800 pixel display, a 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual core processor and 1GB of RAM. Over and above that, there will be both front and rear cameras. However, the device may be just Wi-Fi only. Coming to the pricing, there has been no official report so far. Google + All Set To Take Breath Away As It Crosses 20 Million Users

by Paul Joseph July 14, 2011 Featured

The new Google+ happens to sweep the world of social media and takes over Facebook with 10 million user base . This is just the beginning as it aims to cross even 20 million this weekend . The statistics come from the independent analysis by Paul Allen – founder of Ancestry.com. The surprise element in this entire storyline is the swift and quick growth of Google Plus by almost 350% in 6 days as presented by Allen. This analysis was carried out adhering to the surname based model and this uses the U.S Census Bureau data. Here the surname popularity in U.S is taken into account and is compared with the Goggle Plus users. He also made divisions in U.S and non U.S users in this survey as Google Plus is global. Almost 100 to 100 samples to get the total percentage of Google Plus sign ups and then used the figures to get a ration of U.S. to non-U.S. users (one U.S. user for every 2.12 non-U.S. users) to generate his worldwide estimates. However the twist in the tale is even though Google Plus estimates an user base of 20 million, can it oust the 750 million Facebook users on any given day? Keeping this in mind, Google Plus is taking up a lot of engagement ideas so that users make it a habit like Facebook. Mark Striebeck says that the Google Engineering now plans to integrate Gmail into the service to serve as a large built-in user base for the emerging social network. Are you on Google+? What do you think is Google Plus just another social network or a Facebook killer? People Give +1 to Google+

by Paul Joseph July 12, 2011 Featured

When Google+ was launched few days back, almost everyone was asking just one question. Will Google be able to do this time around? Google has almost taken over the internet space in last few years. But, the only major thing that was missing from its catalog was social networking . But, if we go by the first reactions of Google+ users, it looks like Google has done this time around. Google has already flirted with the social networking space in the past; not just once or twice, but thrice. It’s previous attempts were Orkut , Wave and Buzz , which all failed to make an impact. What e-commerce was to Web 1.0 , social networking is to Web 2.0 . Facebook is reigning at the top in this space with more than 500 million active users . But, Google+ has made Facebook take serious note of it. It was evident when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg took a hasty news conference on last Wednesday to announce its so-called awesome feature (which was not that awesome after all). Google+ is still an invite-only service. The real test will be when it becomes available to the masses. But, if we go by the initial response, it looks like Facebook has got a serious competitor and may give it a run for its money one or two years down the line. Google+ has got few really interesting features like Circles , Hangout and Sparks . Many people believe that Circles was the best thing to have happened to social networking. Afterall no one wants to share the same stuff with his/her friends, boss and family. Hangout allows Google+ users to make video calls among multiple contacts. Users can also have one-to-one conversations. Facebook has integrated its chat with Skype to counter this feature, but lacks the same functionality. One of the early users of Google+, Nikita Wable says, “ I got invites from two people. My first reaction after joining the service was, Wow! Time to bid adieu to Facebook. I was fascinated with Hangout and other features. But, I am not sure if Google+ will really work. Because when Facebook was launched, people were uncomfortable to shift from Orkut. Only time will tell if Google+ succeeds in attracting people just like Facebook did .” Google+ has attracted massive attention in short span of time since it was launched. One thing is true that Google has done something solid this time. But, only time will tell if it succeeds in dethroning Facebook or not. TRAI To Telecom Providers: Own Up About Real 3G Coverage Areas

by Paul Joseph July 6, 2011 Featured

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a notice to all service providers to mention the 3G coverage areas in their respective advertisements so that the users can access the services without any problem of coverage area. They have come to this decision after some ugly disputes that have taken place in the past month. We had written about an errant Vodafone user who wasn’t given adequate information about 3G coverage by the company. This had resulted in an ugly battle over Facebook and even led to a defamation notice. Eventually, because of a lot of bad press, Vodafone apologized to the user and dropped all chargers. It looks like the TRAI has taken steps to ensure customers are given all the necessary information. We welcome the move as service providers need to constantly be kept in check. It also shows that while 3G may have a great future, with some  projections saying it will touch 50 million users in 2012 , they need to work on basics like wider coverage first. What do you think? Is stricter governance by the TRAI needed or are telecom providers responsible enough to not need such monitoring?
