Rediff has launched its daily deal site, Deal Ho Jaye . Now, why doesn’t it surprise us? Guess… Cause everyone and his second cousin is doing it. Rediff joins the Indian daily deal market which is already crowded with names like SnapDeal, Taggle, Koovs, MyDala and SoSasta, which has been acquired by Groupon. This news comes at the same time the web giants, Google and Facebook, announced their entry into this territory with Offers and Deals , respectively. Check out the ‘How it Works’ section and it seems like a deja vu. Like that of any other group buying site, a customer first has to buy the deal paying in advance using credit/debit card and internet banking or avail cash on delivery, which has become the new trend amongst all the companies. Then they will receive the coupon either by email, post or SMS. And finally they have to visit the merchant and show the coupon to avail the deal. Now, the important question is how successful Rediff can be in its attempt? The daily deal market in India is no doubt blooming. Over the past couple of years, Indian consumers have become interested in buying online. The concept of group buying is one step ahead of ordinary online purchase and it has attracted a large percentage of Indian buyers. Rediff is one of India’s biggest web companies and will strive to reach at the top, leaving its competitors behind. Rediff does have the ability to do so yet, its attaining instant success is doubtful. Rediff must offer something exclusive to the customers to go past its competitors. Are they doing so? Visit their site and you will find discounts ranging between 30% to 70% for products and services related to health, fitness, learning dance, quality food. Yes, they have started out with a lot more cities, 40 to be precise, than what the other companies had started with but, considering the fact that the industry is over a year old now, that is inevitable. Based on the deals the company is providing and the number of cities it has started out with, it seems Rediff is emphasising on quantity rather than quality. This may also be a strategy for the initial phase, during which it wants to make its presence felt before they can enter deeper into the market and offer quality deals. The good news for Rediff is that its price per stock increased from $11.44 to $14.21 once this news broke, implying a 24% growth. With Rediff entering the daily deal market in India, will consumers find much value? Every company wants to attain the success that Groupon has witnessed. In an attempt to make profit from what comes their way, the companies are providing deals that only increase the number of deals featured but, don’t add value for the consumers. Even Groupon India or SoSasta has not been able to provide quality deals. Now that Facebook and Google have launched their very own daily deal platforms, we just have to wait until they make their way into India and that is when the Indian Groupon clones and Groupon India will be tested. Until then we will get to see a three way competition to tap the burgeoning market between SnapDeal, the market leader in India, Groupon’s SoSasta and Rediff.
