Cherple.in By Globaltel Media To Offer 2 Way Online Texts In Hindi

by Paul Joseph November 23, 2011 Featured

After spreading its wings in Philippines, Mexico and Brazil earlier this year, United States-based Globaltel Media is launching a localized version of its popular Text service for Indians; Cherple.in . The site will facilitate two way text chats in Hindi to any Web-enabled computer or tablet/smart-phone. The service is currently free only for desktop users apparently to rival its present competition ? The Cherple service lets users carry on a two-way text chat conversation with any US cell phone from any device on the Internet. Basically a PC-To-Phone two-way text communication regardless of cell provider and phone manufacturer. Though the service appears to benefit singular users, it is a very clever marketing tool for One-To-Many SMS marketing, which has not stopped even with a recent cap set by TRAI . This marketing needs local talent to support and expand its operations and reseller base feels Globaltel Media President and CEO Robert Sanchez as he said, “ Our successful expansion in India will come from the relationships we secure with telecom partners, operations providers, technology resellers and advertisers. With SMS traffic through the Hindi site expected to top ten million SMS messages per month, our partners will be critical to the initial performance and plans for expansion .” Cheple is very popular in US where it originated as it offers a very simple text messaging Website that links Web-enabled computers and tablets to any US Numbered mobile phone. The simplicity extends beyond the usage as it does not require any special application for PC as it works in regular Windows Browser. It even does not require any form of registration which even Google feels the need of ! With an ever increasing mobile population with access to internet on the go , India is home to 1.2 Billion people & everyone agrees India is heading in an ideal direction for online advertisement. Some are trying to offer additional services , while Cherple is offering traditional traditional SMS route to woe customers. Given the recent trends , we doubt its success. Massive Upgrade To The Pinch Mobile Messaging Platform

by Paul Joseph August 24, 2011 Featured

Last year ,we blogged about the launch of Affle’s smartphone messenger Pinch. Those of you who were using the Pinch Mobile Messaging app have a chance to rejoice. Affle , the company that develops Pinch, has just released a massive update to the service that brings a lot of features like full cross-platform and SMS integration, group messaging , status broadcast and contact integration . According to Affle,  Pinch is not just an IM but a phone messenger and it creates a unique way for you to connect better with your phonebook friends. Anuj Kumar, CEO, Affle said at the launch, “ The latest version of Pinch further strengthens our offerings on the messaging platform and complements our existing product SMS2.0 Live , which has already got us over 20 million downloads in Asia alone .” The Pinch messaging service has been around for sometime and with this power-packed update they will definitely carve a niche for themselves in the messaging and communications apps bracket. Some of the promising features enabled by this update.   Free messaging to all contacts over data: Everyone hates wasting money on SMS when you can communicate for free over your data connection. The Pinch App uses data for all its communication protocols and thus saves you a lot of money. Unified & auto discovered friends list:  The app pulls all your contacts from all the major social networks like Facebook, Twitter etc. and organizes it neatly.  Group Messaging and Chat rooms: As Internet consumption is now mostly through smart-phones, these features are essential. This is something that most other IM’s have missed and it is where Pinch may do really well. Pinch to SMS feature: Using this feature Pinch users can connect to most of their phone-book friends without them even having the Pinch client installed on their phone. Completely cross-platform: The client is available on 7 mobile operating systems, namely iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, Blackberry OS, Nokia’s Symbian platform, phones having J2ME support and mobile browsers. A host of other features like Delivery status and social location sharing along with a clean and elegant UI. You can get the Pinch App from all major App stores or alternatively from the Pinch website .   BY: Denzil Lewis

RIM Updates BlackBerry Messenger To Version 6

by Paul Joseph July 29, 2011 Featured

RIM’s widely popular messaging platform BBM just got updated to version 6 which introduces a lot of social features like Foursquare check-ins , third party app integration and sharing and discovering apps with friends . Most of these features are aimed at young BlackBerry users rather than RIM’s loyal corporate clientèle. The third party app integration is a key feature which will enable users to chat within games , news apps or any other sort of app without having to close the application. For instance a two player game can use this feature, where both users can chat while playing the game. The third party app integration also opens up gates for alternative BBM clients. This truly transforms BBM from just an app to a platform. The RIM Blog has a list of third party apps which have been developed to integrate these features. They range from news and sports apps to location and travel apps. The update also allows users to share location, links, podcasts and calendar appointments. There had been rumours earlier that BBM would also be coming to iOS and Android, however till now nothing of that sort has happened. Given that BBM has more than 45 million users , and more than 70% of them use it daily, this upgrade should come as good news for them. Along with the launch RIM has also started a competition for app developers to develop the “ Most addictive social app using BBM “. BBM 6 can be downloaded from this link for all devices with BB OS 5 and up. Additionally, BBM integrated apps will appear on the BlackBerry App World very soon. So download the new version and tell us your experience.

And Now We Have Facebook-Ready SIM Cards Too!

by Paul Joseph February 16, 2011 Featured

When it comes to Facebook integration for mobile phones, smartphones are given more importance than feature phones. But since the number of smartphone users are less than that of feature phone users, if Facebook services are made available on feature phone platform, it can make bring forth a highly lucrative market for the service providers. Previously, Facebook had partnered with Snaptu to bring a app for feature phones which is at par with those of the Android and iOS platforms. ( Image Credit ) Gemalto, a Netherlands based digital security company has announced Facebook for SIM, a services which allows subscribers to use Facebook feature phones. As far as assembling advanced features of Facebook is concerned, the service won’t appear that modish. Picture streams or sliding interfaces will be available exclusively on smartphones. But the basic functions relating to Facebook like receiving notification, status update, sending messages, finding friends, sending friend requests, poking a user could be availed by users on any feature phone using this SIM. Philippe Vallée, Executive Vice President of Gemalto, added: Facebook for SIM enables operators to leverage two of their main assets: the SMS to communicate with the web application and the SIM for application distribution to the masses. Over 200 million people already use Facebook on handsets and those are twice as active as non-mobile users. By providing anytime, anywhere availability to the social network, Gemalto delivers on the growing demand for mobile connectivity all over the world. The compatibility of the SIM card with GSM handsets will be maintained by SIM Toolkit, a product of GSM and thus is able to run on every GSM handsets with Class 2 SMS. Since Class 2 messages can be delivered directly to the SIM, users don’t need to involve themselves in the process. The updates by a user and those by his friends, will run via the SIM and it will not require data connection to process the same. Rather it will rely on the SMS connectivity of a handset. In this way, users would be able to access Facebook anytime and anywhere without a data connection. Gemalto also announced that the application is compatible with mobile phones which are totally SIM chip dependent. All such phones are either prepaid or subscription based and the SIM will activate its functionalities on both. For now, the Facebook branded SIM will be delivered to users on a free trial basis and after some time subscription plans will be added. The charges that users will have to pay, will be revealed then. A Facebook spokesperson gave the following statement, post the announcement: We worked closely with Gemalto on their Facebook for SIM product and believe it will be another easy and affordable way for people to stay connected through Facebook on the mobile phone of their choice. Facebook for SIM creatively combines technologies from some of our existing mobile solutions that especially are attractive for people with feature phones and have limited or no data plans with a mobile operator. Through the Facebook application on the SIM card people can: Update their status and view comments on it, write on their friends wall, receive notifications, find friends on their SIM phonebook. The bottom line is, the launch of the Facebook for SIM by Gemalto is a good news for the users of feature phones and Facebook acknowledges it. Henri Moissinac, Facebook’s head of mobile business said, “Gemalto has developed a creative solution in Facebook for SIM that enables people without mobile data plans to stay connected to their friends on Facebook in an affordable way.” (This post was cross-posted from SocialTrakr – Gemalto Brings Facebook To Feature Phones Through SIM Cards) Editor’s Note: It seems to be raining Facebook on phones, inside and outside ( INQ’s Facebook phone and HTC’s phones with dedicated Facebook buttons). But, it seems like none of these is ‘ The Facebook Phone ‘ we wrote about some months ago – at least he doesn’t seem to think so. We’ll just have to wait and watch! India, Indian Developers Dominate BuzzCity’s Mobile Gaming Metrics!

by Paul Joseph December 21, 2010 Featured

BuzzCity has just released the November numbers for DJuzz , its ad supported free mobile games portal. And in keeping with the global trend of increased mobile gaming it reported a 17% increase in the number of games downloaded in November – making it a total of 7.6 million games for the month. It came as no surprise that the increase in these numbers is primarily due regions where mobiles are cheap and the main source of internet access. The site which offers neary 7000 games in 29 categories developed by 100 mobile game developers caters to platforms like Java, Symbian, Android, Windows Mobile and some are even mobile based. Region wise, India continues to dominate with nearly 4 million game downloads(52%). 3 of the top 10 downloads were developed by Indian based or owned developers-  RockeTalk , IgFun (owned by Indiagames ) and Mobimasta. While Indiagames and Nazara made their way into the top 10 developers too. While the ‘Action and Adventure’ category dominated, Social & Messaging was the 2nd largest – piggybacking on RockeTalk’s success. Arcade and Racing games were popular too. CEO Dr. Lai said “Localisation is one of the key elements required to better engage mobile users and it’s likely that this trend will further develop in 2011. Furthermore, as mobile marketing continues to mature, it’s vital that brands don’t restrict their strategies to smartphones. Feature phones continue to dominate in many areas and incorporating these handsets within mobile marketing strategies is vital.” This is reflected by the fact that games like Reebok Zigtech, were developed specifically for India and made available exclusively to Indian users. The increasing content in languages other than English also reflects this trend. Chinese, Korean, Thai, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese were in demand. Nokia’s dominance, and the overall popularity of feature phones is also worth noting. Since a lot of the ‘buzz’ is around smart phones, it is very easy for developers to forget where the numbers really are. And, RockeTalk’s, well, rocketing numbers are becoming increasingly difficult to look over. Given that it recently released its API to third party developers. It could be on to something big. We’ll keep more than an eye on it. The entire report reveals several other interesting aspects such as popularity by geographical regions, reasons for growth in new markets etc. and you can find it here . Facebook And Skype Bond To Grow Stonger? Google Bought Groupon Already?

by Paul Joseph November 29, 2010 Featured

The Tech world has no shortage of rumours just like Tinsel Town. Apart from the Wikileaked Cables, perhaps the biggest news in the last 24 hours are the rumours about the Facebook, Skype Integration and the speculation that Google may have already bought Groupon. Facebook And Skype’s bond grows stronger In September, we wrote that Facebook and Skype had come together to allow Facebook users to IM/call other friends through Skype. Since then speculation has been rife about when they would unite at the other end. i.e. Skype on Facebook. On Sunday, Facebook app developer Tal Ater may have stumbled on some code that reveals this integration could be on its way – or being tested at the very least. A developer for Green Any Site , Ater came across some javascript libraries, that used an object called VideoChat, which seems to have everything that would be needed for a video chat. It mentions SkypeID a number of times on a page and possibly links a SkypeID with a Facebook User. He also notes that since it wasn’t there every time he loaded the page there is a very high chance that Facebook is testing it with a specific set of users. The page with the code can be found here and a mirror can be found here . We wondered when the Skype Integration was coming when Facebook’s new Messaging Platform was announced. It would be very interesting to live in a world where Gmail calling is competing with a combination of Facebook and Skype. Has Google already bought Groupon? It seemed that this rumour had died down after surfacing last week. But it is back in full gusto today. Over the last few hours several tech blogs have revealed some interesting new tit bits and lend some(not a lot) amount of legitimacy to all the speculation. VatorNews broke the story after having reportedly spoken to an unnamed insider. While neither Google nor Groupon has said anything (yet), VatorNews claims its source is reliable. The size of the acquisition is rumoured to be around $2.5 billion and the exact timelines of the deal are not yet available. TechCrunch’s Alexia Tsotsis has posted a back and forth (over tweets) between Google’s head of M&A Neeraj Arora and Groupon CEO Andrew Mason, from way back towards the end of september. While, this is indicative of nothing in terms of a deal between the 2 companies, it is around the same time that the rumoured Yahoo bid fell through. So far, it is all just speculation, but there rarely is smoke without a fire – and we have our lighter fluid ready. What do you think? Which of these 2 is more likely to be true?
