Google Buckles Under Pressure Removes Offensive Content. Facebook Refuse 2 Budge

by Paul Joseph February 7, 2012 Featured

In the ongoing  issue  about an Indian Trial court trying to book Google, Facebook, Microsoft and 18 other social networking firms over the alleged ‘Objectionable Content’ being hosted on their sites, Google India seems to have given in to the trial courts demands. They told the court yesterday that they have managed to remove certain offending web-pages from their search results. Facebook and Google were among the ones that  filed  a compliance report earlier in accordance with the court’s directive to remove texts, photos and videos which depicted Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh in a negative light. This complaint filed by an activist has been blown up and religion is also being used as an excuse for such an action. Companies like Yahoo! and Microsoft have filed for deletion of their names from the list of defendants due to the fact that there was no allegation against them for web-casting any hurtful material. While Google India has given in to this absurd request which is highly questionable in terms of objectivity and freedom of speech, Facebook India has told the court after filing its compliance report that it does not control nor operate the servers that host  www.facebook.com  which are based in the USA. According to Facebook, it is neither a necessary nor a proper party to be added into the defendant list. They have also asked the court to change the name in the suit from ‘Facebook’ to ‘Facebook India Online Services Pvt. Ltd’, which is the proper name of the social networking company in India. We would like you to ponder on these developments. We are becoming more and more like China in terms of ‘banning’ or ‘censoring’ content. So what if Sonia Gandhi was made fun of? Isn’t it covered in our right to free speech? Does the web have a different set of rights? Hypocrisy has always been a part of our Government since some time now. This is a perfect example of a political party flexing its muscles to make needless and unnecessary changes to how the free web works. What are your thoughts on this issue? Share them with us. MS Office In The Cloud As BlackBerry Teams Up With Microsoft: Boost In Productivity?

by Paul Joseph January 31, 2012 Featured

BlackBerry Makers Research In Motion (RIM) has collaborated with Microsoft to launch a Cloud based Office Productivity Suite. Simply titled Microsoft Office 365 , the service will help Users & Admins alike to better manage the corporate data on the Smartphones & Servers. Blackberry who recently recovered from the blackout is in no mood to upset its present customers & is offering this service free of cost ! Of course the customers include only who have subscribed to the stand-alone Office 365 suite or the standalone Exchange Online offering. However, the good news is that no matter what the data plan one uses, Consumer (EDGE) or Business (BlackBerry Internet Services [BIS] or BlackBerry Enterprise Services [BES]), one can still purchase this service which is presently not priced. The new cloud-based service will do what iPhone owners have been doing for quite some time . Synching Emails, Documents, Calendar & Organizer data. However, RIM has an ace up it sleeve with BlackBerry Balance . This tool will assist Corporate IT Administrators to effectively manage Corporate data on the device which many enterprises fear might land into wrong hands . Furthermore, BlackBerry users can heave a sigh of relief because there is a choice to objectively separate Personal Data & Corporate Data! This cloud-based service will also bring remote lock and remote wipe functions with it. With the recent stepping down of BlackBerry head honchos & other events &  incidents , we wonder is there something more than what catches the eye? . With the probable acquisition of Yahoo, not yet materialized, is Microsoft eying RIM? The companies are already collaborating heavily behind closed doors to enhance customer experience . Furthermore, Microsoft & RIM primarily cater to the same end of the Customer pyramid, i.e. the Enterprise Market. There were even rumors of a possible take-over, but they remained just that, rumors. We believe there is still a lot of life let in RIM, but it has to up its game, if it wishes to remain a considerable force in the business circles. Yahoo To Start Inserting Ads To Its Media Content. Get Ready For Commercial – Breaks Even Online!

by Paul Joseph January 24, 2012 Featured

Yahoo! will soon offer Marketing agencies an opportunity to insert their advertisements into Yahoo’s multimedia content . A while ago, Yahoo had made foray , albeit late into the world of online streaming of movies. Yahoo, at that time claimed it was doing so to offer original & professionally created content to its audiences. Now we know why it had intended to do so. At that time it even offered a web-exclusive release of Super-K an animation film. Yahoo had been planning this for quite some time. We had first reported Yahoo’s spreading of its wings in Sep 2011. Hence this should not come as surprise. Especially when Ad-spends in India, though are rising, the online display advertising business is a dismal 3.7 per cent of the total budget allocated for putting across products & brands. With gross under monetization of this lucrative, yet untapped field, Yahoo! has as its audience of about 30 Million Internet users who regularly consume online video content. In terms of clips, its about 1.8 Billion video streams being watched per month. Yahoo has the necessary intelligence to allocate targeted ads owing to intelligence that even Microsoft relies on . With this aggregated knowledge about consumer behavior Yahoo! should not have any issues offering just what the consumers wants to see & buy. India is a youthful country with online population growing at a healthy rate. The only roadblock is the poor bandwidth. If broadband is made available cheap , Yahoo’s revenue could see a huge spike just like Google’s . We guess, Yahoo should start offering some incentives to attract more & more users to its portal to view movies with cleverly inserted ads! Unlike TV’s at home, one may choose to mute the video when ads are being played, but what if Yahoo displays just what you had been craving through a wish list somewhere? War Of Search Giants: Bing Beats Yahoo To Snag Second Place

by Paul Joseph January 16, 2012 Featured

In the war of search engines comScore has revealed that Microsoft’s Bing has just surpassed Yahoo! Search . Bing & other MS sites fielded 2.75 Billion search requests as against Yahoo’s 2.65 Billion . In terms of US market’s share it was 15.1 % against 14.5% respectively. However, these two are nowhere near even when clubbed together against Google’s 12 Billion search requests or a whopping 66% . We tried to analyze the reasons for this upsurge: Yahoo has signed a 10 Year deal with Microsoft. With this deal Yahoo has tried to save money by relying on Microsoft to provide the bulk of its search technology. Microsoft actually gained from this deal by getting more requests to process and analyze over time. What this meant was Microsoft got ample opportunity to understand search preferences & trends. The Bing program has been bleeding money to the tune of US$ 7 Billion. This news could offer some solace to the company that heavily relies on Windows Operating Software & its popular web-browser. Why are comScore results important? Research firms tracking the lucrative Internet Search market rely on the results to offer them to the Internet Marketing companies. These in turn, can offer prices based on the feedback, for advertisements displayed along-side the search results. Google has been Internet’s most profitable company owing to its dominance in the search category . Yahoo on-the-other-hand has been steadily loosing market share & revenue. However, there have been recent attempts to add other ancillary services to up its preference among the native crowd . In India, we clearly see an affiliation to Google. How many of our readers still prefer to use Bing or Yahoo Search? What is your experience? Facebook Gets Attacked By Ramnit: More Than 45000 Accounts Compromised

by Paul Joseph January 9, 2012 Featured

Facebook has always been at the centre of never ending privacy and safety accusations. Just recently, Founder Mark Zuckerburg’s private photos were leaked online due to a glitch. There are many more privacy issues that Facebook has grappled with but the accounts that are hacked by worms/malware are potentially the most dangerous. Security company Seculert has declared that the worm called Ramnit has accessed and compromised more than 45000 Facebook accounts by stealing their login credentials. The worm propagates through ‘Windows’ OS. The agency suspects that the attackers were manually logging onto these compromised accounts and posting malicious/infected links to other facebook users. Once clicked, the worm downloads itself on your Windows machines and infects Windows executables (.exe files), HTML files and the Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook). This worm thus can propagate itself fast across many machines around the world. Ramnit was an old worm which has been modified to hack Facebook accounts. According to Microsoft, Win32/Ramnit is a family of multi-component malware that infects Windows executable files, Microsoft Office files and HTML files. Win32/Ramnit spreads to removable drives, steals sensitive information such as saved FTP credentials and browser cookies. The malware may also open a backdoor to await instructions from a remote attacker. According to Facebook, they have confirmed that the accounts have been compromised but they have also pointed out that the ‘worm’ is not spreading via Facebook. In their statement, the company spokesman said, “ Our security experts have reviewed the data, and while the majority of the information was out-of-date, we have initiated remedial steps for all affected users to ensure the security of their accounts. Thus far, we have not seen the virus propagating on Facebook itself, but have begun working with our external partners to add protections to our anti-virus systems to help users secure their devices. People can protect themselves by never clicking on strange links and reporting any suspicious activity they encounter on Facebook .” Well, the virus is definitely not spreading through Facebook automatically as the person has to click the ‘infected links’ to allow access to the worm on your computer. So many people had changed their passwords once they saw that something was posting to Facebook as them and hence most of the account info collected by the worm is invalid. Now, the new estimates are that some 20,000 accounts are still hacked. Most of these accounts are from UK and France, so it is safe to say that the worm was deployed in either one of these countries. We advise all of you to check links carefully before clicking them. If you see a suspicious link or a Facebook share, please do not click it. If you follow this, you will be safe from the worm or any other malware. Google Get 200+ Patents From IBM: Gets Ready For Upcoming Lawsuit Against Oracle

by Paul Joseph January 9, 2012 Featured

The patent wars are heating up in every major software company around the world. A lot of companies are treading this path carefully. The only thing that makes sense is to hoard up as many patents as you can to fortify yourself against patent lawsuits and trolls. That is exactly what Google has done. They recently acquired 200 more patents from IBM which cover a wide spectrum of web services like email, server backups, database optimization, ad serving and mobile web page display. Google has gotten many patents earlier from IBM last year. There is one more important patent which deals with social networking and Google plans to use it to boost Google+ . They acquired more than 2000 patents during the period from June to December last year. Google is all set to buy Motorola Mobility to boost Android and its manufacturers and keep them safe from Microsoft’s and Apple’s patent litigation , pending an Anti-trust review. They are now lending these and other patents to Android manufacturers whenever they get sued for patent infringement. Recently, HTC lost to Apple on 1 count of infringement. Without Google’s support the damage would have been greater. Google is ramping up its defense against rival Oracle who have claimed that Android significantly infringes on their Java technology. The lawsuit is up for hearing soon. Google has claimed that rivals like Microsoft and Apple have conspired to attack Google’s mobile OS with bogus patents just to make to OS expensive to manufacturers. Microsoft still makes money for every Android phone sold by making manufacturer pay up for using the OS. The modern concept of patenting (especially software) is pretty messed up and paints a very confusing picture. My only argument here is that legal lawsuits, bogus patents and patent trolls make innovation very difficult in the software industry. Google Further Increases Position As The Dominant Online Ad Platform

by Paul Joseph December 6, 2011 Featured

Google Inc. started as a Search Site with a simple, uncluttered design and has grown to something to much bigger. From Search,  Advertisments  to Software and Cell Phones, t hey now are one of the largest companies the internet has seen. A post over at All Things D shows us how Google hasn’t stagnated despite being the market leader. In the above statistic, you can see the split-up of the major Ad Platforms over the past few years. It has shown Google  rising from 34.9% to 44.1% over the past five years. This has been at the expense of its competitors, namely Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL . The only other major player who saw a gain in share is Facebook , who have jumped from 0.2% to 3.1% . The reason for Google’s continued rise could be due to the addition of YouTube advertisements and Mobile Ad’s on their highly successful Android platform. Facebook too went from being literally nonexistent to almost rivalry Microsoft’s share in 2011. This could be because of the vast number of increase in user base from 2006 to now. Also, their use of Sponsored Stories in people’s Feeds have made a significant impact in the Ad market. Looking forward, Apple’s iAd platform too may gain momentum in the Mobile Advertising market, especially if adopted by app developers. The rate at which Android is growing, Mobile Ad’s on their platform too can only rise. We see a future where Yahoo and AOL ad’s fade into oblivion. How do you see the Online Ad market moving in 2012? Do let us know in the comments below.
