Gmail Introduces Smart Labels To Help You Organise Your Inbox

by Paul Joseph March 10, 2011 Featured

Remember the days when we had to browse through scores of emails to read the important ones. Those days are history, thanks to Google, after they launched Priority Inbox for Gmail. Priority Inbox helped , “users spend 43% more time reading important mail compared to unimportant, and 15% less time reading email overall.” We started reading only the important ones, but more and more unorganised emails got stacked in the inbox. Now, Google has come up with a solution to that as well by launching, Smart Labels, a feature which automatically helps you get email where they need to go. Smart Labels is Google’s next weapon to fight email overload. Google’s Stanley Chan wrote in a blogpost on the Gmail Blog, “Today, we’re launching a complementary feature in Gmail Labs called Smart Labels, which helps you classify and organise your email…Smart Labels automatically categorizes incoming Bulk, Notification and Forum messages, and labels them as such.” Bulk — includes mass mailing, promotional newsletters and daily offers (these will be moved out of the inbox automatically and can be read later). Notifications — included account statements, receipts and other emails which might not be from a contact but is equally important. Forums — includes emails from forums which you might have taken part in, mailing lists or other emails whcih are sent to large groups. Okay, so how is it different than the labels and filters that you have already set up? It is not so different and works along with the labels set by you. This feature from Google is mostly for naive users who are not conversant with the extended features which Gmail has to offer and it does a good job. Unlike Priority Inbox, which Google had pushed to all users, Smart Labels is hidden as a product of Google Labs. You can activate Smart Labels from the Labs tab in Settings where it is listed as ‘SmartLabels’. Do give this new feature a try and let us know your experience with it.
