Mobile Is The First Access To Web For 49% Of Mobile Web Users – Opera Report

by Paul Joseph May 9, 2011 Featured

We had reported earlier about the scenario of the Mobile Web in India. Back then, we were impressed about the number of Mobile Internet enabled phones had doubled from 16 million to 38 million in 1 year .Now, in 2011, Mobile Internet has gone way forward. In a study titled ‘ Mobile Internet in India ‘ , Opera Software tells us about the current setting of mobile web. According to the report here are some interesting  findings : There are now 250 Million Mobile Internet capable handsets, with 25 Million people using it actively. Compared to 8 Million active users in the previous year , this is a huge jump. Page Views have jumped by 337% Mobile Web usage is not restricted to the Metro’s. 60% of users are from non-metro cities. Users in small towns tend to have irregular or no access to desktop computers. The Report also talked about Mobile Only Internet Users (MOIU’s). These  are people who never, or infrequently, use the desktop internet. 49% of Indian Mobile Web users were MOIU’s. MOIU’s showed a behavior pattern completely different from people who normally use mobiles as a secondary browsing device. They are more net savvy and are better acquainted with their mobile phones. Apart from popular websites, they also explore off beat app stores and pages. The rise of the Mobile Web in India can also be attributed to the universal availability of relatively cheap internet plans. Most operators offer unlimited or 2-3GB of data usage per month for under Rs. 100. This is affordable for the common man. Interestingly, it was found that a comparatively small amount of content consumption happened through the Mobile Web browser. This can be attributed to the use of dedicated Apps for consumption. Apps are designed and developed in such a way that they provide easy user-interface and quick retrieval of content even on low-priced handsets which usually have smaller screens and low data processing power. While having many App Stores does reach out to a large number of users, we feel that this sort of fragmentation is unhealthy. This is because apps in these stores are usually not the latest version, hence they may have security loopholes that have not yet been patched. Also, some of these stores customize the apps so that they only work on their mobile network. We feel that instead of having a variety of different app stores, they should join the largest app store on their respective platforms. Eg: Ovi Store, Android Market, Blackberry World. This would cause less confusion for the customer and help in keeping apps updated. The article goes on to talk about the high rate of sales of Internet Enabled Mobile Phones. They are estimated to cross the 50 Million mark by the end of 2011. At this rate, they will be more in number than desktop computers in India. This will undoubtedly have a huge effect on the way Mobile Internet is viewed. Advertisers, who are currently skeptical of the power of Mobile Ad’s, will warm up and embrace the platform. Currently, the Mobile Ad Market is just Rs. 25-50 Crore a year , compared to the Rs. 1000 Crore a year Online Advertising Revenue. How do you think Mobile Web being the Indian consumer’s primary point of contact with the World Wide Web will affect us? Do let us know. Opera Mini Boasts 100 Mn Monthly Users

by Paul Joseph April 12, 2011 Featured

The browser battle is also shifting to smaller proportions with the growth of data usage on feature phones. Although smartphones have dedicated apps for the different sites which users frequent to, feature phone users depend on their mobile browser to help them visit these sites. Opera Software ASA has made its mark in the mobile browser market and commands a market share of 20 percent . About couple of months back we had heard that Opera has crossed 100 million users. The numbers were that of both Opera Mini and Opera Mobile combined. This figure has developed further and Opera Mini itself now commands 100 million monthly users with over two billion daily page views. As mentioned in the press release sent out by Opera, of the present 100 million users 11 million have joined in since February 2011. A year back in February 2010, Opera Mini just had 50 million users, which has now doubled and is growing faster than ever, which is also reflected in the daily page views achieved, doubling itself since July 2010. But, the dream run of Opera might not last very long. Firefox 4 Mobile is rearing to take on the market. Mozilla released the final version of Firefox 4 Mobile about a fortnight back. Although this browser is currently available only on Android and Maemo devices, we can expect a much wider release very soon. Firefox 4 Mobile packs in features that would definitely give Opera a run for its money. The browser comes with Firefox Sync, a feature which, as the name suggests, allows users to sync their Firefox experience across various devices. The browser from Mozilla also supports HTML5 and rich apps, while also allowing easy tabbed browsing. Opera has the numbers but Firefox has the technology which will draw those numbers to it. What has to be seen is when Mozilla releases its mobile browser for other platforms and how Opera plans to compete with the advanced features of Firefox 4 Mobile. There is yet another way of looking at the present state of affairs. If we look at the the figures from StatCounter, the browser of Android has seen phenomenal growth and commands 15 percent market share. Considering the rate which Android as a mobile OS is growing, we can expect the browser of Android to get an even higher piece of the market in the future. Nevertheless, the feat attained by Opera is, “Sweeeet!” as Opera Software CEO Lars Boilesen puts it. How do you see the mobile browser market panning out?
