Twitter Receives Huge Boost From Apple – Gets System Wide Integration In iOS

by Paul Joseph June 7, 2011 Featured

Apple at the Worldwide Developer Conference announced that the next version of their mobile operating system – iOS 5 would have twitter baked right into the OS. Users would need to sign in just once in settings, after which they can tweet from any app without having to login again. It would be integrated with built in apps like photos, safari, maps, youtube. Even third party apps can enable one tap tweeting by using APIs Apple has made available with the new OS. Earlier tweeting a picture would take around 5-6 steps, now with the integration it would be a simple one tap process. Also important to note is that the camera would use twitter’s newly launched photo sharing service. Contacts can hook into twitter and update the avatar of all the people in your list who have twitter profiles. Just weeks ago, Evan Williams one of the founders of twitter had written a post about how the future of identity belongs to Apple and Google. His point was how these companies could allow developers to use the already authenticated users’ login credentials to avoid the hassle of creating new accounts or signing-in for each application. He would be very happy to see that something similar is right now possible on iOS with Twitter credentials. Presently facebook offers similar functionality through facebook connect using their iOS app. This was however a hacky implementation, nowhere comparable to the smooth twitter login process that iOS 5 would bring. This partnership of Apple and Twitter is all set to challenge the combined might of Microsoft and Facebook. (Microsoft is an investor in facebook) During the keynote, Scott Forstall said that users are sending in a billion tweets every week. Apple also officially launched their cloud services product – iCloud and a new version of Mac OS X called Lion. The keynote is available for streaming here . Facebook Launches Send Button, Improves Groups To Facilitate Private Sharing

by Paul Joseph April 27, 2011 Featured

Facebook has always being criticized for being too open. And, why wouldn’t it, when it has a founder and CEO evangelises the openness of the internet. But, the social network has evolved with time and in the recent months they have launched features and products which facilitate private interaction. The major changes came in the form of Messages and new Groups. Now, Facebook is taking a step ahead by launching the Send button and improving the features of its Groups. Facebook is launching the Send button almost after a year since the Like button was released, which celebrated its anniversary last week. The Send button has a similar look and feel to that of a Like button. But, unlike the Like button which allowed a user to share a content publicly, the Send button allows the user to share content privately with his friends. When you click on Send button a pop-up appears, using which a user can send that article or page to Facebook friends, Groups or any other email id. The send button, which currently started out with 50 partners , comes with a very interesting feature. The number of likes that will now be shown on websites with the Send button, would also include the number sends that page has received. If you already have a Like button on your website, you can include the Send button separately . But, if you want to include a Like button on a new page , you will also be provided with an option to include the send button along with the Like using a simple code. The Like button is one of the most popular features that Facebook has rolled out and is installed on more than 10,000 websites every week. It is omnipresent across the web and has a transformed the way we share data found on the web. The popularity of the Like button led to Facebook merging the Share button with it. Looking at the Send button now gives me a feeling that it will also be as popular as the Like button. The trend is slowly shifting and users are becoming more mature as Web 2.0 evolves. The growth of e-commerce sites have led to a whole new kind of sharing as our friends list comprise of both real and virtual friends. We might not want to share with our virtual friends, news of what we are planing to buy. But, on the contrary we love to share such news with our real friends. The Send button would allow us to do just that. There is another way of looking at the launch of the Send button. This is a good way of getting users to start embracing Facebook Messages, which according to Zuckerberg is a “modern messaging system.” Initially, the Send button would not replace the email buttons that many websites feature but, in the future, we can see the like button being used more extensively as users start understanding the potential that it has. other than allowing users to share links with friends and groups, Facebook is also allowing them to share links using email ids and that is what is going to be the game changer. Now, coming to the improvements made to Groups, there are quite a few. Over 50 million new Groups have been created since the new Groups was launched in October 2010. According to Facebook, “It’s grown quickly because of its social design. Instead of making everyone build and manage individual friend lists, one person can create a group for their families and everyone in the family gets to use it.” The improvements that Groups will be receiving now includes the integration of Questions, better membership control and the ability to upload photos. Unlike Pages or Profiles, a question or poll started on Groups would remain within the group and only members can respond to it. Previously you could only upload images on personal profiles which allowed your entire friends list to view your photos. But, now you can upload your pictures on specific groups and only the respective members would have access to them. The new group also gives the admin control over who joins the group. Earlier, any member could invite his friends to join a group but now, the admin can moderate who amongst the invitees can actually be a part of the group. These changes make Facebook Groups a more personal affair. You can use your profile to interact with all your friends and build specific groups to interact with smaller sects at a more personal level. These improvements also close a major discussion of what a brand should use to represent it self on Facebook — Page or Group. For those who had created groups before the new interface was launched last year, Facebook would provide an option to shift to the new interface. The launch Send button and the improvements made by Groups were inevitable considering the recent developments in the industry. +1 , the latest attempt at social by Google has seen one of its features — the +1 button — being released. Google is betting heavily on +1, which is expected to have Loops which is analogous to Groups. Loops would allow users to communicate more easily with smaller, more personal groups, rather than with their entire network. It seems, Facebook is slowly moving towards that as well. The Send button and the improvements made to Groups are just the initial steps that Facebook has taken to fight off the on coming Google +1. Facebook Profile Pages Get A Facelift

by Paul Joseph December 6, 2010 Featured

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a new profile page for the social networking site on  CBS’ 60 mintues. He also said that there would be two big themes that are prominent in this overhaul. One is that a greater emphasis has been given on making the things visually appealing and the other being streamlining the design layout to help users find information of their close ones. These will make it a breeze to find the most popular features and information, which hitherto have been mixed up with less important links on the old profile page. Changes Galore The most significant one of all the changes is the page layout. Information of the user such as employers, education, current city, relationship status and language known are now at the top of the page. Just below the info is a photo stream wherein there are couples of photos where the user has been tagged in the recent times. He or she however has the option to show or hide a photo there. Navigating the tab is also changed now as the tabs are placed right under the profile photo on the left side of the page. And they include Wall, Info, Photos, and Questions etc. and are quite self-explanatory in themselves. Worth mentioning are the changes in the “Info” tab where all the text links in the old profile page have been replaced by thumbnails of images for a better visibility. Users would have the liberty to sort out the pages where there would be either thumbnails or just text links.  There are also more categories available. Coming to the professional experience, users can now describe more about their workplace by adding the projects they handled or are handling. And this can be a great online resume. They also can tag their friends or colleagues at both education and work. Intuitive Friends and Friendships The “Friends” tab is also more attractive now with the new grid look of the friends at one place. By default, there would be a “friends” list below the profile photo. Users can now create a custom list say “Top Friends” or “Roommates” and have it displayed there. This is end of a long wait of most of the users who have always wanted to flaunt their friendships. Messages and Pokes are now on the top of the profile page and under which is the recently released “ Friendship ” page that shows the relationship between the two users. Users Opt-In Option Unlike in its previous releases, Facebook would be giving the liberty to its users to either get on to the new profile page or be happy with the older version. Literally, it would allow users to opt in. And it may take a while until they make every user hook on to the new profile page. However, here is a word of caution for users. If they upgrade their pages to the newer version, there is no way that they can revert these to the older ones. So, if you are still in love with the old profile page, you better not be upgrading it unless you are made to do so. The new roll out also has a wizard that helps users to get a hold over the new features. So altogether, it’s quite a different game here in the new facelift. While I write this post, I experimented with the new page and everything is good, intuitive and enjoyable. I believe that most of the users would find the Facebook profile page better than its predecessor. It appears to me that Facebook is now totally determined to rule the social networking arena forever and let no other players enter the same. If you are keen on experimenting with the new profile page, just do it here . What do you think of the new profiles? Let us know! Looking For A Social Media Agency?? TRY US! Facebook Photos Gets Better With High Resolution & Bulk Tagging

by Paul Joseph October 4, 2010 Featured

Facebook is implementing changes every day to its interface. Like everything else, the leading social network has to keep up with times too to make sure it stays one step ahead of competition . On these lines, Facebook has now introduced upgraded Facebook photos which lets users upload high resolution pictures and at the same time allows you to tag these photos in bulk. Photos in the past We all agree that Facebook photos was not exactly the best feature on Facebook. Though it allowed you to share pictures with your friends, it was a time consuming process to upload photos and then tag them individually. All this effort just to show a photo thats has a resolution of only 720-pixels. This had to change and Facebook has done exactly that. Photos now So what does the new and improved Facebook photos have to offer? To begin with, You can now upload  pictures with 2048-pixel resolution. Once you create a new album and upload all your photos for that album, instead of each picture opening in a new web page, photos and its tags and comments will load on top of a page making it much easier for the user. The new uploader works on Flash-based technology. Facebook, however, clarified that they will not be using facial-recognition but rather will be using a much simpler technology which will identify a person who has been tagged in multiple photos but will not link it to a Facebook profile. Once uploaded, the photos can now be viewed in a much better and streamlined method. Whats more is that thanks to the higher resolution photos, friends can now take a 5

Excited About Your Vacation? Don’t Post It On Facebook/Twitter

by Paul Joseph July 15, 2010 Featured

Who doesn’t love to take a break from work or college and fly away to a far off location, or maybe drive to a nearby hill resort for a couple of days? And in today’s world, most of us tend to let all our friends know about our travel plans through social networking sites, mostly to make the less fortunate jealous. However, do not be surprised if you come back home one day to find your abode ransacked. Travelocity’s recently concluded poll revealed that more than half of the travelers like to share their vacation plans on social media sites. Would you really want people to know where you are going to be for the next ‘n’ number of days? You could might as well put up a board on your front door saying “No one at home. Feel free to take anything you want”. Social networking sites have started taking precautions against protecting its users like launching the panic button which would protect teenagers from cyber abuse. However, in the end, is it not our responsibility to ensure the safety of our home or our loved ones who are left back at home? Unfortunately, 30% of travelers never bother about taking precautions on posting about vacation plans on social network. Here are some tips: Be very selective about what you or your family members are posting on social media sites. According to the poll, only 45% families made sure that no one posted about vacations. You definitely want to turn off the ‘add location to your tweets’ function if planning to tweet while on vacation. You most definitely do not want all your followers to know your whereabouts. Deactivating Foursquare is another must-do as it updates Facebook and Twitter when you log in. Enjoy your vacation, and once you are back, you can go crazy on any social networking website you want. Post your photos on Facebook, tweet about how amazing your vacation was. After all, it is all about making others envious, isn’t it? Related Posts Location, Location, Location – What’s Your Location? Infosys Dishes Out New Social Media Norm

by Paul Joseph July 14, 2010 Featured

Our home grown IT company, Infosys Technologies Ltd., which is the most active IT and BPO company on Twitter and Youtube, is no alien to using social media to its advantage. But recently, social media has become a bane for them. Its own employees have been venting their frustration and anger on social media. How it started was that earlier this year, Infosys had introduced a new HR initiative called iRACE (Infosys Role and Career Enhancement) as a means to optimize its human resources in the times of recession. The company defined it as a novel way to measure performance linking it to growth of the company, showcasing roles, proficiencies and discrepancies. The employees however had a different view. iRace has been responsible in some employees getting a cut in their paycheck and also imposing strict rules on promotion and perks. This led to employees voicing their opinion on social networking websites and also blaming some Infosys personnel. Also, some of the employees started posting information about the projects that they were working on. Sensitive company information was leaked, sometimes unknowingly. In response to this, Infosys is planning to introduce a new social media policy that will allow it to take legal action against such employees leaking confidential company information on Facebook, Twitter and Orkut. This will make Infosys the first Indian company to come out with such a policy, which is expected to be implemented next month. Breaching this policy would lead to warning and in worse cases, termination from service. The company is looking at social media as a fast way to communicate with its employees. A recent example would be to communicate effectively the news about the bandh. Social media and company employees have a long history. It has been shown that employees discuss their jobs and also waste time on social media. This is detrimental to the interests of the company and has resulted in corporate world banning social networking sites. Just ask Kimberely Swann who was fired for referring to her work as “boring” on Facebook. Now, Infosys employees will think twice before posting anything work related on their Facebook Wall. What do you think of this development? Facebook Photos Leave Flickr, Picasa Way Behind

by Paul Joseph July 12, 2010 Featured

Sometimes, the sheer size of something overwhelms you, the point in question – Facebook. What started off as a social networking website, Facebook now has more photos on it than any other dedicated photo sharing website! Digest this – Everyday 2-3 Terabytes of photos are being uploaded, with each month adding about three billion photos! This is how flabbergasting and enormously huge this is! Facebook is no Photobucket, Flickr or Picasa web album. Still this has resulted in users flocking to the website to share photos with friends. According to comScore, Facebook is growing at three times the speed of top photo websites. Talking about India, Facebook gets about 18 million users per month, compared to 1.91 million users on Flickr and 1.61 million users on Picasa. It is not customary to compare a social networking site and a photo sharing site, but this has become unavoidable in this case. This trend can be summarized in one word – ’sharing’. On dedicated photo sharing websites, you post your pics in an album and share the link with your friends. You post this link on your social networking sites too. But why use two different platforms, when the social networking sites allow you to post photos? This is precisely the reason why users have started uploading pics on facebook. This is an extension of the exhibitionist behaviour wanting to share the pics with everyone. The comments and likes on the album lead to instant gratification of the user. Most of the albums that you see on facebook are about trips and parties that you may have attended, that is, people centric. The ability to tag your friends is an added benefit. Other photo sharing websites have recognized this trend and they now allow users to share their pics on their wall with the click of a button. Also, they are trying to drive home the fact that they are websites which host photos specifically and hence, give a lot more flexibility when it comes to uploading photos. Professional photographers prefer using Flickr over Facebook for the sole reason that the Flickr community is filled with people who appreciate photography. You can upload full resolution pictures on Flickr, which you cannot do on facebook. Most of the pictures are not people centric but good photographs that people share so as to get critical acclaim from other users. Also there are professional options like camera model and ISO number and copyright issues that Flickr takes care of. Also, if you want to share only some pics from your album and not let other users see the rest of your album, you can do just that. The bottom line is that when you talk about pictures, Facebook is about people and Flickr is about photography. There always will be photo sharing websites for the sole reason that it creates an elite community of people who appreciate photography and not just pictures of them having a good time. In India too, around 64 per cent of the people use facebook for its photo sharing feature and about 36 per cent access the video features. These figures show that Indians are also eager to showcase themselves on social media. With the amount of data being uploaded on Facebook, it has become a data monster. What do you think about this trend? Is it time for you to upload another picture of yourself on facebook?
