Nokia Shows the Door to Ovi: Opens Up A Window For Irony

by Paul Joseph May 16, 2011 Featured

In a blogpost over at Nokia Conversations titled The Evolution of Nokia and Ovi, Nokia gave us a glimpse of its future plans . Ovi, which is a Finnish word meaning ‘Door’, was ironically shown the door by Nokia. Nokia has a wide range of services with the Ovi brand name: Ovi Maps, Ovi Music, Ovi Store, Ovi Mail and Ovi Contacts are a few. The term Ovi will be replaced by Nokia. It is to be noted that a couple of years ago, the services offered by Nokia were Nokia Maps, Nokia Messaging etc. They then changed it from Nokia to Ovi, and now are changing it back. Such uncertainty is not good for brand recognition, as people were just beginning to identify Ovi with Nokia. Nokia’s EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Jerri DeVard explains : “We have made the decision to change our service branding from Ovi to Nokia. By centralizing our services identity under one brand, not two, we will reinforce the powerful master brand of Nokia and unify our brand architecture – while continuing to deliver compellingopportunities and experiences for partners and consumers alike.” This is solely a name-changing exercise and the service roadmaps will continue exactly as planned. The only difference consumers can expect to see is the replacement of the word Ovi with Nokia, not only on their device software but also in other places such as printed material or online media and advertisements This has also opened the door for a lot of hilarioustweets and comments: “Finnish would really confuse that Nokia have door and windows product. it would make them wonder if nokia come back to sell household product.” says  Cycnus. “On a side note, the 2012 prophecy has actually turned out to be true in Ovi’s case!” says Rounak Jain “That’s a good news, because we, in Hungary, can’t stop laughting on OVI, because it means ‘kindergarten’ in hungarian”, says  user  GK / LKA Team There is also a lot of confusion, with a lot of people wondering what will happen to their NAME@ovi.com email addresses.  Nokia had majorly promoted Ovi Mail as a first email address to Mobile Only users in many developing countries. We hope this doesn’t leave them in the lurch. What do you think of the brand change? Is it a welcome move from a CEO who is determined to lift his company up, or is it a sign of a confused management dancing to the tunes of the US Press? Trade Cricketers And Teams This IPL Season At Cricketstockexchange.com

by Paul Joseph April 13, 2011 Featured

A new game will be played by viewers from now on, parallel to cricket that the teams play on the field, which would allow the viewers to trade stocks of their favourite cricketers using virtual currency. Hungama Game Studio has decided to capitalise on the ever-lasting popularity of cricket amongst the Indians and have launched an online stock exchange for trading shares of teams and cricketers — Cricket Stock Exchange (CSX). CSX is open to all users and upon registering they will receive stock of $20000. After that the users can participate in trading. CSX will also give ball by ball updates of actual cricket matches. Other than the display board to show real time updates, there will be analysis by experts like Ayaz Memon and Mohandas Menon based on statistical figures. These analyses and performances of the cricketers will influence buying and selling of stocks. Users with better performance will be titled as ‘Trader of the Week’ and even better performers will be featured as ‘Highest Gainer of the Week’. Hungama said in the press release that the site Cricketstockexchange.com has a smooth interface. There’s one thing about the site that is quite interesting. The site abbreviates each IPL and international team, and all cricketers by tickers. It gives a feel of any standard finance and trading site. The press release correctly reads, “Cricketstockexchange.com has an extremely user friendly interface, while at the same time offers an all round trading experience.” Other than the homepage, there are five other pages — Marketplace, Pavilion, Leaderboards, Articles and Stat It! – each of which are an important part of the experience. Marketplace helps users search for stocks of teams and cricketers which they want to buy. Pavilion is for wining virtual currency through participating in quizzes and polls. Article section mainly holds expert opinions and pre and post match analysis, while Stat It section will feature stat figures of teams and their players. Online cricket games and mobile apps have already seen enormous turnover due to the world cup hysteria. But, this one is different. It has a blend of cricket and pure stock market. This makes it unique. However, it is not totally unique as in the past ‘Hollywood Stock Exchange’ came up with something similar to this on entertainment industry. But in India, this concept is newly introduced. With IPL under way Cricketstockexchange.com will surely pick up pacer through the 74 matches which will be played across 51 days. IPL brings in cricketers from across to the globe, playing high voltage cricket — a perfect set up for some stock trading. There is only one caveat though, The site is very addictive, my money is on Kolkata Knight Riders and Shane Warne. Have you tried Cricketstockexchange.com? On which team have you put your money? Search Direct – Yahoo’s Version Of Google Instant With Rich Content

by Paul Joseph March 24, 2011 Featured

Search Direct — that is what Yahoo has named its new product that functions like Google Instant and anticipates queries as you type them. Google had launched Google Instant in September 2010, and was welcomed with mixed reactions, but soon became popular amongst the masses. Yahoo, in an attempt to push new life into its search, is also adopting the real-time route. According to Yahoo, their product “goes beyond a list of blue links” and provides direct answers to search queries through rich content. Shashi Seth, senior vice president, Yahoo! Search and Marketplaces, said in a press release , “With today’s launch, direct answers – not the search results page – is the primary focus. We are redefining the search process and prominently displaying direct answers where search decisions are being made.” So, how does Search Direct work? After you click on the search box on search.yahoo.com , a drop-down shows ten trending searches. Once you start typing in your search, you will be shown ten likely search terms. When you hover your mouse on each of these terms, a corresponding box on the right shows content from Yahoo. In the current beta version only limited content is available, mostly from Yahoo’s products and includes top trending searches, movies, TV, sports teams and players, weather, local, travel, stocks, and shopping categories. If you do not find the content you are searching for, you can simply click on the “search” button or hit “enter” to view the regular search results. During a press conference , when Seth was asked how Yahoo’s product is different from that of Google’s, he answered, “They’re very different products. We’re focused on providing answers, not links. Google Instant is focused on providing more links, faster. Not answers. We believe the next generation of search regardless of whether it’s on the web or mobile, they’re looking for answers, not links.” Yahoo is stressing on “rich content” as its primary feature which according to them Google lacks. But, in recent months, Google has started showing contents from Google Images and YouTube in its search results. Yet, Yahoo has a upper hand, not because of the content it shows, but for how it shows them. Google Instant can show content of a particular term only once. But with Search Direct, you can check content of ten terms in a single search. This also increases the speed of showing results for Yahoo. In Google Instant the entire page has to be loaded, but for this only the necessary content is displayed. At the press conference, other important information about this product surfaced, which is the “next generation of search” according to Seth. Yahoo mentioned that Search Direct will be different for different devices and they will also be launching it for smartphones and tablets. The company plans to monetise this product by including ads in the section set aside for content and is also planning to influence the results shown based on what a user’s friend has searched for or shared. Blake Irving, Chief Product Officer at Yahoo, stressed at the press conference, “Yahoo is still in the search game, “Search matters,” it’s still incredibly important to us. We have partnership with Microsoft, they do back end and we do the user experience. We’re a company thinking about engaging and delighting our users.” Seth added to this saying, “We are totally changing the landscape of search. For past few years search hasn’t changed a lot for the user. I think the time has come where the confluence of what users are asking for is all coming together and we’re positioned to take advantage of that.” There is definitely a lot of bragging, but Search Direct reassures that we can’t just forget Yahoo, yet. I don’t know how much I will use it, but the demo was interesting enough for me to like it. Yahoo is finally getting some things right, hope they don’t let this flounder as well. Slideshare Partners With Tyroo For Ad Monetization

by Paul Joseph March 7, 2011 Featured

There is a saying “If you are good at something then stick to it.. Outsource the rest!”. This seems to be true for advertising led monetization of the web as well. Slideshare which is a globally known presentation sharing platform has partnered with Tyroo for monetization of its India inventory on the website. This has been the way most global social media sites have gone about their India ad inventory. Facebook partnered with Komli, Linkedin with networkplay and so on. Though Linkedin recently decided to go on its own in the India market recently its initial foray and ad sales was represented by an ad network in India. As per the press release SlideShare has almost 2 million unique premium users in India that consist of managers, decision makers and executives. Such a move will help Slideshare team focus on product innovations like Zipcast which they recently launched. Rather than worry about ad revenue from markets like India which still represent a smaller set of the overall traffic. Though slideshare is ranked among top 200 sites in India its highest traffic still comes from the US market where its ranked among the top 400 sites. Looking For A Social Media Agency? CLICK HERE! Idea Cellular To Roll Out 3G Services Next Month?

by Paul Joseph February 17, 2011 Featured

Quite contrary to its initial plan of launching 3G services in the state of Gujarat by March this year, Idea Cellular has announced its plans of rolling out the services in the entire country by the same time( read: March 2011). PTI reports of Mr. Rajat Mukarji, the chief corporate affairs officer, saying, “ We are looking at launching 3G services next month. We are still working out on details,” He further added, “ The details are still being worked out. ” However, there was no comment from his side as regard to the phases of launching 3G services in the circles where the company has bagged licenses. To remind you, Aditya Birla Group owned Idea Cellular (with a subscriber’s base of over 81 million as on December 31 st 2010) has won 3G spectrum in eleven circles for a sum of Rs. 5,768 crore. These include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (E), Uttar Pradesh (W), Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir. The company is rather slow in terms of implementation as its counterpart’s viz. Tata DoCoMo, Reliance and Airtel have already started offering the services. According to a report by Convergence , Idea’s 3G spectrum will be used for both data services as well as de-congestion of 2G voice traffic. Earlier, the company was in talks with a select few operators to be a part of the circles where the company did not win the licences. There was an interesting insight from Telecom Talk stating that way before its launch; its readers spotted Idea Cellular 3G signal in various places of Pune, Maharashtra such as Aundh, Pune University, Baner Road, Pimpri, Chinchwad, Shivaji Nagar, Swargate and Pune Station, Camp . Does not that sound interesting? Share Press also has written about Idea 3G signals being spotted in small towns and big cities of Kerala. Ironically, there was no signal of Tata DoCoMo, which has already launched its 3G services in 9 circles. For our readers’ information, Idea Cellular has the biggest hold in Maharashtra-Goa circle with more than 1,12,81,376 GSM subscribers. Incidentally, it has won the 3G licenses here too. And the company has engaged Nokia Siemens Networks to build its 3G network. It could be seen that the 3G scene in India is getting clearer with each mobile operator joining the bandwagon. It is also anticipated that sooner or later, the remaining players will also chip in. At present, operators have only 5 MHz of spectrum. This certainly needs to be optimized and a broad spectrum is always what these companies should long for. Data plans also need to be competitive and there should be something like unlimited plans as well, of which many are crazy about in India especially youngsters who download high amount of data in the form of music and videos. To sum up, 3G services in India definitely need to catch up the speed to become a good competitor in the global telecom war that is on now. What do you think? Facebook To Reveal Something – What Could It Be?

by Paul Joseph October 6, 2010 Featured

You would think that Facebook has everything required to keep it on top on the pile when it comes to social networks. However, competition from networks like Google Me (some time in the near future) and Diaspora has prompted Facebook to be more proactive and make sure it stays ahead in the rat race for some time to come. To this effect, Facebook has upgraded Facebook Photos by allowing users to upload high resolution photos along with bulk tugging. It also tied-up with Skype which should most probably do wonders for Facebook chat. Now, Facebook has sent invites to the press for an “event” on 6th October at its Palo Alto office. So what could Facebook be announcing? Probable announcements Facebook Phone – This rumor has been doing the rounds for some time now. Though Facebook initially denied it, Mark Zuckerberg later on said in a very convoluted manner that it may exist. If Facebook plan to unveil this on Wednesday, it is going to be big. But somehow, though exciting, seems a bit unlikely. Video Chat – A new video chat seems like the perfect candidate for the announcement. Typing up with Skype gives Facebook many new features which it can play with in Facebook Chat. Facebook iPad – Facebook has still now made an application for iPad. Considering its been over 6 months since the launch of the iPad, don’t you think it is high time we see this app? Unlikely announcements While we are at it, why not go crazy and come up with bizarre ideas on the announcements. Google & Facebook tie-up – We do not mean this in social networking terms. Think about advertisements. Last quarter, Facebook generated more income through advertising than Google. Considering the reach of both the companies, a tie-up could be unbeatable in the online advertising space. Geo-tagging – Twitter has it. So does Flickr. Why not Facebook? Themes – Just like you can set themes on Twitter, MySpace, and even Gmail, what if Facebook gives you the same ability. It would be great to see much more personalized pages than the same old blue and white. Facebook Shutdown – Mark Zuckerberg will announce he has made enough money and that he is bored of Facebook so will shutdown the social network. (Ya right!) Apple (Unexpectedly) Relaxes iOS Developer Rules And Releases App Review Guidlines

by Paul Joseph September 10, 2010 Featured

In a move that’s certainly taken the tech world by surprise, Apple has released a public statement stating that it will roll back 2 of the most controversial changes it made to the IOS Developer Rules during the course of 2010. To quote from the release We have listened to our developers and taken much of their feedback to heart. Based on their input, today we are making some important changes to our iOS Developer Program license in sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2 and 3.3.9 to relax some restrictions we put in place earlier this year. This is a welcome change for the likes of Adobe and Google acquired Admob. Section 3.3.1 which dealt with Third Party Tools and Languages had this to say – 3.3.1 Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited). Has now done away with the Bold section. This is good news for Adobe because it means development on Adobe Flash CS5 is not longer ‘explicitly’ prohibited. Whether any such app makes it through the approval process is a different story however. According to Engadget this was done mainly to include game developers who use ported engines and interpreters. The Flash angle ‘may’ have been incidental. Given the extent to which ‘His Steveness’ went to explain his reasons for almost making it a mission to keep flash out of iOS devices, it is unlikely that all is rosy for Adobe. Only time will tell. This development does also open the doors for platforms like Microsoft’s Silverlight, if only technically. The other significant change was to Section 3.3.9 – Privacy and Analytics. The language that seemed to specifically ban Admob or to be precise -  ‘ an advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple ‘ has been removed. Though Apple never really enforced this policy there was a proverbial sword hanging over Admob’s neck. As a result of today’s developments, Google has released a statement on the matter saying that this will keep in-App advertising on the iPhone open to different ad networks. The change in section 3.3.2 on Interpreters, according to John Gruber is merely a change in wording and not really a policy change. Before we start ‘accusing’ Apple of perhaps beginning to ‘open’ it is important to not that AppleInsider insinuates that these developments have less to do with ‘feedback’ and more to do with avoiding regulatory action from the FTC which is believed to be compiling an anti-trust case against the Cupertino based giant. Highly likely! App Store Review Guidelines The other noteworthy development is the release of App Store Review Guidelines , or  104 ways to get your app rejected!! This is a plane english ‘Live’ document and Apple’s attempt to tell developers what could possibly get their Apps rejected. Any iOS developer out there should certainly give this a thorough reading and anyone else should read at least the first page only because it says things like – ‘ We don’t need any more Fart apps’ and ‘ Review Board that you can appeal to. If you run to the press and trash us, it never helps. ‘ According to some voices in the valley – this document was probably written by Steve Jobs himself. On a more serious note – it contains 21 categories and the cardinal sins to avoid under these, if developers want to ensure that their apps have a shot at being approved. The ‘Final’ call however is still Apple’s making the entire exercise a ‘Paper Tiger’ of sorts. Looking for a Social Media Agency? 4 Years, 5000 Posts, 100+ Interviews, 172 Countries.. WAT A Life!

by Paul Joseph June 27, 2010 Featured

4 years.. Feels like a lifetime to me.. A life time of learning.. June 27th 2006 was the day WATBlog was born as it had its first post on that day.. Its been four years since and we have crossed quite a few landmarks and yet I feel so dissatisfied as to the amount we still need to achieve. We started with 1 post or story a day and our early stories were not more than one para! Have a look at our first one here. We have grown from that and today have 5000+ posts on Web, Advertising & Technology, over 100+ video interviews on WATShow and we reach over 172 countries in a month! We started with WATShow next which was a video interview section and we were surely amateurs then if you saw our first attempt ! But our latest one is miles better than that. In short we have come a long way. Ive always believed its not where you are but how you got there is what defines who you become. We have got here through a lot of pain, effort and overcoming challenges. Being a self funded startup (Ive never taken money from anyone.) we have had to face some really rough days! Today WATBlog is part of WATMedia Pvt Ltd a privately held company founded by me which runs a family of sites and businesses under the WAT Brand. We run WATConsult – A leading social media firm, WATShow – The Video Show, on WAT, WATPR – Press Release site on WAT, WATJob – Job sites on WAT, WATGame -A Gaming site and we also recently initiated our own Social media course and have started a social media centric blog in Socialtrakr.com. We employ 25 fulltime people and dozens of freelancers who help us run all of this. We are a profitable! Yes we have been profitable since 10 months now as an overall company. Question is.. Did we reach where we wanted to be in 4 years? Honestly I never had  a plan. All I wanted to start was a  simple blog that helped me get my views across to a larger audience. From that it sorta grew into something that was naturally progressing. Given that I was 21 years old and full of ideas I kept adding newer things to the WAT family each year. Did all of them succeed? not really.. Do I consider myself a success? Not really again. Most people start their careers at 25 and Id be foolish to think Im successful and been there done that at my age. I have got somethings right but each day goes by and I realize how little I know on how to run, manage, grow and scale businesses. Its truly a daily learning exercise of sorts in knowing oneself and understanding markets and the world around us. Ive never had mentors or board of advisors here at WAT but I also do know that a lot of advisors and board members of other companies read us. Though I must admit Ive  been privileged to be competing in the space with people far older and far more experienced than me. Guys with IIM IIT degrees, Guys with decade of work experience behind them, Guys who have worked in professional companies etc. I have none of that and that make me and the company I run sort of a maverick. It also gives me an opportunity to learn from them. Ill be blatant in saying Ive learned a lot from competition and its great to have tough competition as thats one way to scale the bar for yourself. All in all I believe we are still learning, still trying hard and still failing more than we are succeeding. Some challenges we still face are on meeting the expectation of readers, on the monetization of WATBlog and on building a media power house in the digital media space. Yes we have aspirations now which we hope we will realize in the years to come. On this day when we turn 4 years old we would like to thank all the readers. Those who loved us and those who hated us as well. Both helped us grow. One through encouragement and one through feedback. Id also like to thank all the bloggers right from those who wrote great stuff and to those who tried. I believe all have contributed immensely in taking us where we are. All in all its been a growing up of sorts for us here and especially for me at WAT! Suddenly Im not the 21 year old brash kid. Im slightly older, calmer, wiser and also slightly more aggresssive with purpose. Hopefully Id be able to translate all this in bring a better WATBlog to all of you. Mobile Number Portability Delayed in India again not likely to meet March 31st Deadline

by Paul Joseph March 12, 2010 Featured

If you are waiting for Mobile Number Portability or MNP in India there is some bad news from the Union Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology, Shri Gurudas Kamat. MNP will not be available by the March 31st deadline . It was already delayed from December last year due to some operators crying foul . Now the Government is stating that all mobile networks in the country are not likely to be completely ready to offer MNP by this month end and the deadline is not likely to be met We are sure that many operators fear loosing tons of customers once MNP is implemented. The Mobile Number has become part of our daily lives . It is much more than a number to us – it’s like an identity for many of us. And MNP which was like dream come true . It was going to offer us a chance to retain that identity and move to another operator  without fear of loosing touch with your loved ones or key business contacts. Now we have to just keep waiting indefinitely for the dream to become a reality ! In a statement from the Press Information Bureau The Union Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology, Shri Gurudas Kamat in written reply to a question informed Rajya Sabha today that the Government is making all efforts to get the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) implemented at the earliest. However, for this purpose, the whole networks in the country are to be ready and tested before the MNP Service is implemented. Various activities are required to be carried out by the operators including technical augmentation and upgradation of their existing networks, carrying out required installation verification tests, establishing links with MNP Operators and conducting inter operator test. After the service providers are ready with their own inter-operator test results, a complete Acceptance Test (A/T) is to be carried out by Department of Telecommunications (DOT) across the networks of all the concerned service providers in all the service areas before MNP Service is implemented. Though the Government has set the time line for implementing MNP by March 31, 2010, all the networks are not likely to be completely ready by 31st March, 2010 and the deadline of 31.03.2010 is not likely to be met. The revised time line will be announced by the Government after ascertaining the status from all the stakeholders and reasonable time required for Acceptance Testing etc., so that no network problem in call processing/completion, surfaces out after MNP Services are launched Similar Posts: MNP might be delayed by few months as Operators are not Ready in India Consumers To Bear The Mobile Number Portability cost?
