Financial results have started coming in, and with that Apple has become more profitable than Microsoft, in fact the most profitable company in the industry. This was the first time Apple’s profits topped that of Microsoft’s in the past two decades. Just a year ago Apple passed Microsoft in market cap and later it passed Microsoft in revenues as well. Microsoft had a net income of $5.23 billion last quarter , while Apple’s income in the same quarter was $5.99 billion. It wasn’t that Microsoft performed badly in fact they beat expectations to have a record breaking quarter with profits up by 31% from the past year. Microsoft did achieve a lot of growth fueled by the Kinnect and  the XBox 360 and Office , it was just that Apple grew more. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 came to the market pretty late when the iPhone and Android had already started dominating the market and Microsoft still doesn’t have a decent tablet offering. Most of its partners like Dell, HP, Acer and others have chosen to manufacture tablets that do not use Microsoft software. PC revenues were down by 4% from last quarter indicating that tablets are indeed eating into the PC market. Analysts also blame the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, a big market for computers, for part of that decline. Compare this to Apple, it is seeing growth in almost all its divisions, the iOS devices, the Mac OS product line and the iTunes store. There is so much demand for the iPad that they have problems producing so many of them. Right now Microsoft has a lot of products which are worth appreciating like Bing (Google is copying some features from it), Bing maps , Photosynth , Winodws 7 , Windows Phone 7 etc. It is just Microsoft’s strategy to convert these products into profit. There is still a lot of potential for Microsoft with these products and also with its Nokia deal (tablets + mobile devices).
