by Paul Joseph February 9, 2012 Featured

Foursquare  has announced the launch of an updated version of “Explore” for iPhone and android devices. This will club all the features of Foursquare on web from filtering, photos till location changing abilities. Users are now asked to update their mobile app to see the new changes in “Explore”. This gives a boost to Foursquare ‘s local guide rolled out with friend’s recommendations as well as tips and comments from users. So Foursquare is now your local search engine helping yo to explore places by categories like “coffee”, “burgers” and more. The “Specials” will throw light on the offers from those places and you can also check the mayor discounts on checking in. The most intriguing aspect of “Explore” is the filter button. You will see that button on the right in iOS and at the bottom in Android. This will help you to narrow down search results and get more specific answers to your search.  You will find interesting options like “New to me” or even see places your friends have been to. The discover mechanism is something that adds to the dynamism of “Explore”. So you can find out new neighborhoods, beyond your current location by typing the name or by dragging the map . This will be in accordance with your phone’s GPS reach. Foursquare quoted on “Explore, “When you do a local search on many other services, you get a ‘one-size fits all’ set of results. But with foursquare Explore, we’re using your check-ins and your friends’ check-ins, along with the more than 1.5 billion check-ins from the rest of the foursquare community, to personalize recommendations for you. And every time you check in, foursquare gets better at finding places you’ll like”. The idea is to localize search and build a local village on this planet. So with smart “Explore” now you can where your friends go, search where you want to go, offers and more on the go. Cellphone An Integral Part Of Indian Consumer’s Life, Says Nokia VP D. Shivakumar

by Paul Joseph February 7, 2012 Featured

In the mobile phone game, one brand immediately comes to mind: Nokia . They have been around for over a decade and their phones are sold in virtually every corner of the world. Having shipped over a billion mobile phones over the years, from the legendary 3310 to the latest Lumia range, Nokia are one of the oldest players in the market. One of their biggest markets is India. Nokia India is their Indian branch, and one of the most successful in terms of sales. Recently, Anirvan Ghosh of Forbes India interviewed former Managing Director and current Senior VP of Sales for Nokia India, Mr. D Shivakumar. Here are some interesting facts we picked up from the interview . An IIT Madras and IIM Kolkata graduate, Shivakumar joined Nokia India 6 years ago, in 2006. Before that, he headed consumer electronics at Philips and also did a stint in Hindustan Levers. Changing Handset Market Since Joining Nokia In 2006 The biggest change Shivakumar sees in the handset market today, as compared to 2006, is the subscriber base. Back then there were around 100 million subscribers. Now, there are over 600 million subscribers. The telecom ecosystem has achieved such massive growth and he commended the Government for facilitating that. Also, the proliferation of Dual SIM phones and phones by local manufacturers is something that was not around 6 years ago. Another big change was the market moving from a feature phone market with a few smartphones , to a market full of smartphones. After Nokia’s N Series started in 2007, smartphones became more talked about and nowadays smartphones and apps are used by almost everyone having a mid to high end phone. In his words, “The consumer fascination with the mobile phone hasn’t changed. The looks of the phone and the desire for the next innovation continue to be strong. A cellphone is an integral part of the Indian consumer’s life and will be so for many years.” Downward Spiralling Tariffs And Where He Sees The Market Heading In Coming Years According to Shivakumar, the main reason for the popularity of Dual SIM handsets was that the consumer saw the difference in tariffs of various service providers for various functions like SMS, Callling and Mobile Internet. He admitted that Nokia was late to enter the Dual SIM market, but now have it standard across its low end phones. The Telecom Industry has gone from a 5 Operator Industry to a 17 Operator Industry. This has greatly hurt profitability. He believes the industry must work collaboratively to get back pricing premium and create value. In the future, more and more feature phones will be replaced by smartphones. Services like 3G and Internet will play a significant role in purchase of handsets. Also, Mobile related banking, education, health and entertainment services will become more mainstream. What do you think of D. Shivakumar’s vision of Indian’s future of the mobile handset? Do let us know in the comments below. Looking For A Social Media Agency?? – Contact WATConsult – India’s Leading Social Media Agency

Indian Telecom bodies slowly getting ready to auction 700 Mhz soon.

by Paul Joseph February 6, 2012 Featured

After years of lamentable broadband speeds and assorted other challenges in setting up a data transmission infrastructure in India, relief may just be around the corner for us! The Government may soon initiate the process of auctioning the 700 Mhz spectrum band for broadband use. Yes, you heard that right! We may have 4G very soon (The auction may start by May or later, so it depends) The Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked various internal units like the Policy Group and the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) wing to help and evaluate the proposal for sale of the spectrum band. TRAI will also be involved as an advisory on the new policy and will recommend the auction parameters. DoT will also be looking at some additional spectrum which will be vacated by the Defence Department and Department of Space. Everything looks good to go except for a small problem. The Information & Broadcasting Ministry is opposed to this. They are saying that the band is currently required for Doordarshan as it has managed to initiate digitization of its terrestrial network. Doordarshan currently operates 40 Mhz bandwidth between 745 Mhz to 795 Mhz in four metros in the country. The 700 Mhz band runs from 698 to 806 Mhz as identified by the International Telecommunication Union. The problem here is that I&B Ministry wants 96 Mhz in this frequency band reserved for its Doordarshan mobile TV services. The 700 Mhz was generally used for analog television broadcast before they were digitized. Well, we don’t think that Doordarshan should have it all. The auction of the spectrum is the only logical thing ahead. Mobile broadband would improve greatly and bring us at par with International standards. It has just been a year since 3G launched in India and there is still a problem of widespread adoption. Also there is a ridiculous amount of bureaucratic problems such as the 3G Roaming fiasco . Will 4G face the same issues? Looking For A Social Media Agency?? – Contact WATConsult – India’s Leading Social Media Agency

Indian Shoppers Go Crazy Over Junglee.com: But Will The High Last?

by Paul Joseph February 6, 2012 Featured

It is interesting to note that  Junglee.com which marked the entry of Amazon in India, has been pulling in flocks on Indian shoppers. In fact it has accumulated one sixth of Flipkart users. The footprints of Indian shopper on  Junglee.com  is growing healthily and Alexa information analytics shows that there are nine pages per visit and users are staying on the site for approximately seven minutes. This is incredibly good as users on Ebay have a record of spending ten minutes or more. Mahesh Murthy, CEO and founder of Pinstorm says, “ It’s very interesting to note how Amazon’s Junglee.com has been able to draw visitors to its site within a few days of launch and without spending any rupee on marketing or traffic building .” The best part of the story is that Junglee.com has users from  Amazon  and this has boosted the traffic figures by nearly 70%. Junglee.com plays a fair game and has molded itself into a marketplace for all e-commerce needs. It has alliances with online and offline retailers naming HomeShop18, Dabur, Hidesign and also has partnered with deal sites such as  Snapdeal  and others like Univercell and more. Online sales are a hit and the Managing Director of Gitanjanli Group also submits to this fact that Amazon plays a huge role in growing their hits per day. “ We are excited to give customers in India a single online starting point where they can shop a wide selection of products sold by local and global retailers, ” says Amit Agarwal, vice president of Amazon.com However there are mixed views on this. Some Indian players feel that for Amazon Junglee.com is just a entry point and to understand the sentiments and buying patterns of Indian shoppers on the web. Sandeep Komaravelly, Head, Marketing and Alliances,  Snapdeal , feels that the sudden rise in the traffic of Junglee.com is just a hype created by the announcement of Amazon to enter India. This has given a spark of curiosity to Indian Internet users and will not last for long. He says, “ It is too early to quantify the increase of hits or users that we have seen in the last four days because of our partnership with Amazon. We already get over one million visitors on Snapdeal .” To wind up, the inference is that the India has 60 million Internet users and 10 million are online shoppers. India’s retail sector has a $US550 billion ($A515.2 billion) valuation as reported by the India Brand Equity Foundation. So the industry is growing with many more players to join the league. Google Hires Bouncer For Android Market Party

by Paul Joseph February 3, 2012 Featured

Google’s Android ecosystem has been getting a lot of flak since malicious apps were discovered in the Android Market last year. Google had to remotely swipe off these entire app from every user’s phone. Besides the fact that kind of access into my personal phone is a little creepy, this ‘remote swiping’ did not actually offer a solution since Google would find out about these apps only after they had infected user’s phone. Now, Google has announced that they may have finally have the solution to this problem it’s called the ‘Bouncer’. The Bouncer is a server side application which scours the apps that have been submitted to the Market to find out about any malicious activity. This service will not only check for new applications but will also scan pre-existing apps. “Device activations grew 250% year-on-year, and the total number of app downloads from Android Market topped 11 billion,” Hiroshi Lockheimer, VP of engineering, posted on the Google Mobile Blog . “As the platform continues to grow, we’re focused on bringing you the best new features and innovations — including in security.” “ Here’s how it works: once an application is uploaded, the service immediately starts analyzing it for known malware, spyware and trojans. It also looks for behaviors that indicate an application might be misbehaving, and compares it against previously analyzed apps to detect possible red flags. We also analyze new developer accounts to help prevent malicious and repeat-offending developers from coming back.” Google is basically simulating all the new and old apps on its Cloud infrastructure and seeing if the app is malicious or does anything out of the ordinary. Google is best known for automating things and processes. They have always placed a heavy emphasis on  machine learning and this is quite evident in their search engine. Android also features something called as ‘ sandboxing ’ which does not allow one instance of a running app to interact with other other apps or components on your phone. This same technology is present in their Chrome OS . Here’s a excerpt from the blog which talks about Android’s security features: In addition to using new services to help prevent malware, we designed Android from the beginning to make mobile malware less disruptive. In the PC model, malware has more potential to misuse your information. We learned from this approach, designing Android for Internet-connected devices. Some of Android’s core security features are: Sandboxing : The Android platform uses a technique called “sandboxing” to put virtual walls between applications and other software on the device. So, if you download a malicious application, it can’t access data on other parts of your phone and its potential harm is drastically limited. Permissions : Android provides a permission system to help you understand the capabilities of the apps you install, and manage your own preferences. That way, if you see a game unnecessarily requests permission to send SMS, for example, you don’t need to install it. Malware removal : Android is designed to prevent malware from modifying the platform or hiding from you, so it can be easily removed if your device is affected. Android Market also has the capability of remotely removing malware from your phone or tablet, if required. No security approach is foolproof, and added scrutiny can often lead to important improvements. Our systems are getting better at detecting and eliminating malware every day, and we continue to invite the community to work with us to keep Android safe. Android, as a mobile operating system was considered less safe when compared to Apple’s stringent process of App approval. With Bouncer, Google seems to have killed that fear.  This has been hailed by many as a welcome move for Android and the community of users especially with the Android usage and app consumption rising high in India. Let us see how hackers and malicious coders get around this new security measure. Tell us why in the comments box. You Can Now Buy Tickets From Redbus.in Using Your Mobile

by Paul Joseph February 3, 2012 Featured

Redbus.in now goes mobile. Backed by Pilani SOft Labs, Redbus.in now is available to its fan-base on mobile as well. This mobile ticketing service was bouncing in its beta service in 2011. But given the fact Redbus had innumerable bus ticket bookings through credit/debit cards, COD as well as net-banking, it is now time for them to be omnipresent. To this the CEO of Redbus.in, Phanindra Sama says, “ Mobile shows signs of becoming a dominant channel and we want to enable bus travellers to be able to plan and book their tickets easily on the device. We have created a very easy-to-use and intuitive mobile site with all available payment options. “ The mobile site is not only intriguing but also helps users to book tickets, browse bus schedules, choose seat layouts, fares and also make payments using credit/debit cards, COD or net banking. It did bring out the mobile version at a time when the mobile internet users in India are growing constantly. The craze of smartphones has already engulfed the nation. Now the web is moving to mobile as a next step to a smart future-scope. Startups in India are making a mark and this is visible from the humongous investments flowing into the web based product domain. Last year Redbus.in raised $ 6.5 million from Helion Venture Partners, Inventus Capital Partners and Seedfund in its series-C funding. This had started long back in 2008 and 2009 when they started raising funds to bolster their growth and set an example of how simple services can be baked into a product mold.   Looking For A Social Media Agency?? – Contact WATConsult – India’s Leading Social Media Agency Related Posts Mobile Service Black Out As Spat Between Reliance & Etisalat Continue Indian Mobile Subscriber Base Touches 884.37Million, Says TRAI Airtel Services Still Down And Customer Woes Continue Rs. 50,000 Cap On Mobile Transactions Removed By RBI: Brave Or Risky Move? Facebook Timeline Scams Are Lurking Around At Every Bend

by Paul Joseph February 2, 2012 Featured

Cyber terrorists are deriving sadistic pleasure out of the fact that most of the Facebook users are grimacing about the new timeline feature.  The timeline did not gain much appreciation from the Facebook country people since it reveals personal log of a person in details right from the date he or she has been online. Many users have expressed their dislike for this as many do not wish to share their details with all and sundry. Facebook’s timeline will soon be made mandatory and will enable anyone to go through Facebook profiles by date. The cyber security vendor ESET exclaimed, “ A lot of people will decide that they don’t like Timeline and start looking for ways to revert to their old profiles. Scam artists and ‘clickjackers’ are getting ready for that day, offering bogus links on Facebook that promise Timeline removal .” It is a feast time for the cyber rogues who will rush into this scenario where users are unhappy with timeline. So these miscreants are trying to attract people with false “Like” buttons, inviting them to see Youtube videos, asking to invite friends and more. This will only lead to an extension with a malware containment zone. If the Cyber pirates have let out to harm the web security, there must have been some warning from Facebook with regard to deactivating Timeline to evade this issue. Stephen Cobb, security evangelist for ESET expressed his anguish by saying, “ Unless Facebook changes its mind and makes Timeline optional, the bottom line is that you will have to live with it and avoid the temptation to click on links promising to help you deactivate, remove, or disable Timeline .” However on another note the Facebook timeline is kind of a way of shaking users who have not been careful in the past of their activity on the web. Yes now this will push people to maintain a clean chit and share only what they want to. This will keep a check on whom users are sharing with and what. So the timeline is what Garaham Cluley,  senior technology consultant at Sophos says, “ The Timeline was the catalyst to reassess my relationship with Facebook. After all, a website that holds details of your entire life, likes and loves, is gold dust for scammers .” It is time that we all realize how we want others to picture our profile. iPad Buzziest Tablet Brand Online, Says Survey

by Paul Joseph February 1, 2012 Featured

Apple iPad dominated the buzz about tablets on social media in India, according to a survey conducted by NMIncite, a Nielsen McKinsey company. iPad managed to garner more share in online conversations ahead of Android tablets, reports Times Of India. iPad had 55% buzz online, while Android tablets managed to capture 40% share. The survey tracked all online mediums from India for second half of the year 2011. Samsung Galaxy Tab was the highest buzz-getter in Android tablets, while Motorola Xoom, Reliance Tab and ultra-cost Aakash also featured on the list. “Even though Apple has not made a big push to promote and sell the iPad in India, it has already generated tremendous buzz online,” said Farshad Family, managing director, Nielsen Media- India. The survey also studied the category of smartphones. Android was the clear leader in this category. Android-based smartphones managed to garner 41% buzz, compared to iPhone’s 27% and BlackBerry’s 14%. But, this was actually lower than its 45% share for the first half of 2011. According to analytics’ firm Canalys, Apple overtook Hewlett Packard as the largest vendor of personal computers in the world in the fourth quarter of 2011. This was riding on the back of the upbeat performance shown by iPad. Apple sold 15.43 million tablets in this quarter which was almost double of corresponding quarter from last year.   Looking For A Social Media Agency?? – Contact WATConsult – India’s Leading Social Media Agency Related Posts Google Demonstrates Motorola Tablet Prototype Samsung GalaxyTab comes to India Samsung Unveils iPad Competitor Galaxy – Should Apple Worry? iPad Sales Plunge As Kindle Fire Tops Holiday Wish-List: Time For iPad 3?
