Facebook Ad’s Are No Longer ‘Sponsored’, Now ‘Featured’ Stories In Your News Feed

by Paul Joseph January 12, 2012 Featured

What do you do when you have, in your hands, the biggest brand of the last decade? You learn how to make money off it, of course. Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook  can safely be called the largest Social Network of today. Literally everyone is using or has at one point used a Facebook account. Facebook for Brands has been a runaway success. People now rely on the brand’s Facebook Page for information, news and offers. Until now, Facebook has been showing Ad’s on the right hand side of the News Feed. Brands pay to get their Ad shown to a certain target group. With the latest development, the Ad’s leave the side bar and enter your Newsfeed. This may seem as an intrusion to some, as you will see advertisements between stories of your friends and family. Facebook had tried this from 2006-2009 but stopped it after user complaints.  This time around, they promise it is different. Said  a Facebook Ad Executive, “We’ll be labeling these stories as ”Featured” instead of ”Sponsored.” We are using the term ”featured” because we want to make it clear to people that they’re seeing content from a Page or person they have chosen to connect to. Since people can see marketing messages from both Pages they have and have not Liked elsewhere on Facebook, we want to make it clear that marketers can only pay for stories to be featured in your News Feed if you have explicitly liked the Page. And because you are always connected to your friends, we are also labeling stories from your friends that have been paid to be featured in your News Feed as “featured” to keep things consistent. We still hope to show an average of approximately one featured story in News Feed per day.”  So, as you can see, you will be able to better regulate what kind of Featured Content makes its way to your News Feed. This will help avoid Over-Marketing and prevent you from getting irritated with the content you are reading. Once it rolls out to the general public, we will see what and how they react to it. What do you think? Is this an improved way of seeing ads? Or do you prefer the older way of the side bar? Do let us know in the comments below. How One Views Facebook Page, Eye – Tracking Study Reveals!

by Paul Joseph December 30, 2011 Featured

Perception they say, changes with time, while in case of Facebook its Timeline feature reveals a new study. Eye-tracking research start-up EyeTrackShop was asked by Tech Site Mashable to compare visual statistics for Twitter, Facebook and MySpace profiles before and after major site redesigns . For Facebook it was the much-awaited Timeline that Mark Zuckerberg announced in F8 Developer Summit in October of this year. The timeline feature was developed following much testing . It is safe to say, not all liked the new design & users were allowed to retain the old appeal. However, people have warmed-up to the feature & the study puts forth some interesting observations about where your eyes spends its sweet time when looking at someone’s profile: Picture is worth a thousand words. And for now, cover photos being about 10 times greater than the size of profile pictures, people are focusing more on them than before. More good news for advertisers who wisely chose Facebook. The “ sponsored stories ” which earlier grabbed about 43% users’ attention, now get it from about 63%. Guess, marketing through Social Networking is about to heat up ! In the new format, What you do & Where are you (Employer & Location info) get more attention than in the old format. While the observations were primarily for Facebook, the 30 participants were also subjected to Twitter & MySpace profiles. And the observations were pretty interesting: In case of Twitter’s long-awaited redesign, the person’s basic information has taken  precedence over his or her tweets. In earlier design, people chose to read the tweets first. MySpace, which earlier was mauling  surrender to Facebook, hit a home run when almost 97% of its users noticed the section of songs one can click on to play in the new profile. On a more personal note, which pictures do our readers keep as Cover Photos? It will be interesting to know the associations that people wish to put forth about Friends, Places of interest, brag about achievements etc. Do let us know. Facebook Timeline Finally Comes To Android And iPhone.

by Paul Joseph December 19, 2011 Featured

Timeline as a concept was introduced a few months ago by Zuckerberg at the annual F8 summit. The timeline service could be activated by developers and those who wanted to get the preview and it was recently pushed out last week for all Facebook users. The mobile apps also received an UI overhaul some weeks ago. Now, Facebook has managed to sync in all the corners and released the timeline feature on mobile OS’s like Android and iOS. The timeline was accessible in iPhone and Android but only if you used Facebook’s mobile site. Now with the timeline on Facebook’s official app, it is much easier to change and add things like photos, videos and updates on your timeline while being on the go. The app implementation of the timeline while generally being in sync with the desktop version differs in a few ways. To make optimum use of the smaller screen space, the timeline is made up of a single column instead of the two columns as seen in the desktop version. General consensus is that the app on both platforms works faster than its predecessor and is very light. The ‘timeline’ update has not yet been rolled out to the iPad but it is on its way, says Facebook. Facebook has been pushing for mobile this year. It also has an IPO lined up before April. According to statistics, more than half the people use Facebook through their mobile and the company plans to leverage this to make Facebook ubiquitous in the mobile space. I am happy that Facebook is trying to make the user experience very consistent. Facebook For Android Gets Updated: Sports Radical UI Redesign

by Paul Joseph December 9, 2011 Featured

Facebook has changed a lot since it began. It has been continually evolving with time and has become the most dominant Social Network. The company recently rolled out changes to its UI on the service with the introduction of the ‘ Timeline ’ and the Open Graph Protocol for social apps. Compared to these changes, the UI on Mobile app was pretty much the same as before. So we guess the redesign was in the cards. Today they rolled ou t a new update only for Android for all devices. The new update works on all versions of Android from 1.5 onwards. So fragmentation of Android is not a serious issue in this case. The new update sports radical changes in the design of the mobile app and makes it look more in sync with the service. Here are some screenshots of the app. As you can see that the app has now a new way to access your notification and pages along with a redesigned news-feed page. You can filter the news-feed options by searching only for top stories, status updates or photos. This refresh also allows you you view your pages better although the admin controls are missing. Photos and videos load up faster on the app when compared to the previous iteration. There is one little problem though. The Facebook Messenger which is a separate app and the Message features on the Facebook for Android app clash big time. The app shows messages while the messenger shows chats but both get logged onto the same messenger page which give s rise to some confusion when you keep the app on sync. Facebook should integrate Messenger app with their main app in such a way that the redundancy is solved. Otherwise the app is a rather nice. You can get the app by visiting this link .

Google Providing Users New Ways To “View” Blogger Blogs

by Paul Joseph April 4, 2011 Featured

Google is on a mission to revive Blogger. After revealing the redesigned platform at SXSW, Google is now releasing previews of a new dynamic user interface which allows users to view blogposts in dramatically new ways. You can experience the new changes, which have been developed using AJAX, HTML5 and CSS3, by adding “/view” behind the URL of any blog hosted publicly using Blogger (for example: http://buzz.blogspot.com/view ). The change offers the following benefits according to Antin Harasymiv, an engineer working on Blogger: Infinite scrolling: read more posts without having to reload or click to a second page New layouts: different views suited to different types of blogs Speed: download images as you view them, not all at once in advance Interactivity: there are now more ways to experience and engage with blog contents Google is introducing the upgrade with five distinct ways to view blogpost — Flipcard , Mosaic , Snapshot , Sidebar and Timeline . Check out this video which gives you a better understanding of how each of these interfaces work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuDuNV4h_ZI Although Blogger is still one of the leading blog networks, it has stiff competition from the likes of Wordpress and Tumbler. The previous overhaul, which promises to improve the posting and managing of blogs, and the present one, which improves its appearance, does give Blogger the much need look and feel. But, it might just be too late. What’s your take on the new upgrade from Blogger? Would this be enough for you to migrate to it? Showcase Your Digital Work Here! Win An Award!
