HP Labs India Launches App To Deliver Personalized Video To Users

HP Labs India , the research wing of Hewlett Packard has come up with an app to deliver personalized video to users based on their topics of interest. The app is in the public beta stage and is available to download for free from http://www.personalized-video.com . Windows 7 is required to run the application. Users can create ‘channels’ based on their topics of interest after which the app will pull in videos from Youtube (in future more sources will be added) and deliver it to the user through the app. Over time the application learns from the users ratings , watching habits and preferences and delivers content better suited to the users choice. All of the content that the app thinks is suited for the user is played continuously. Users can share videos , find related web pages, annotate certain points in the video and mark videos to watch later. All of the user preferences and habits on the app are sent to a server. This data in the future would be used to deliver ads to the user. So in an attempt to deliver a TV like experience HP Labs plans to ape the worst part about TV, interruption ads . This is something very different from the display ads present on most sites these days. Display ads in most cases are non intrusive, they let you do whatever you’re doing without bothering you too much. TV ads on the other hand completely interrupt the users activity and demand complete attention. If ads like these appear in this app not only would they disrupt the user’s flow but also consume data . Not to mention the information third party advertisers would have access to about your viewing habits. To be fair HP Labs hasn’t yet added this ‘feature’ but plans to do so in the future. All we can say is that as much as we admire the TV-like model of continuous videos we would like the ads to stay away. Researchers at HP believe that such an app would dominate the internet activity of people in non-English speaking countries like India since creating text based content in regional languages presently poses challenges. This is backed up by comscore data which says that 71% of the Indian online population have streamed videos over the web. The idea is good, the fact that users’ behavior is stored on the cloud could be used to synchronize their ‘watching list’ over multiple devices as and when the app is available on other platforms. Till then we would advise HP Labs to improve the app website and perhaps provide more information and videos describing the app. Looking For A Social Media Agency?? – Contact WATConsult – India’s Leading Social Media Agency Related Posts YouTube Videos Now On 3G Cell Phones Lalit Modi’s Interview First On YouTube – Is This The Future?
